    Abnormal auditory forward masking pattern in the brainstem response of individuals with Asperger syndrome.

    Abnormal auditory information processing has been reported in individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). In the present study auditory processing was investigated by recording auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) elicited by forward masking in adults diagnosed with Asperger syndrome (AS). Sixteen AS subjects were included in the forward masking experiment and compared to three control groups consisting of healthy individuals (n = 16), schizophrenic patients (n = 16) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder patients (n = 16), respectively, of matching age and gender. The results showed that the AS subjects exhibited abnormally low activity in the early part of their ABRs that distinctly separated them from the three control groups. Specifically, wave III amplitudes were significantly lower in the AS group than for all the control groups in the forward masking condition (P < 0.005), which was not the case in the baseline condition. Thus, electrophysiological measurements of ABRs to complex sound stimuli (eg, forward masking) may lead to a better understanding of the underlying neurophysiology of AS. Future studies may further point to specific ABR characteristics in AS individuals that separate them from individuals diagnosed with other neurodevelopmental diseases

    Artificial Intelligence, 3D Documentation, and Rock Art - Approaching and Reflecting on the Automation of Identification and Classification of Rock Art Images

    Rock art carvings, which are best described as petroglyphs, were produced by removing parts of the rock surface to create a negative relief. This tradition was particularly strong during the Nordic Bronze Age (1700–550 BC) in southern Scandinavia with over 20,000 boats and thousands of humans, animals, wagons, etc. This vivid and highly engaging material provides quantitative data of high potential to understand Bronze Age social structures and ideologies. The ability to provide the technically best possible documentation and to automate identification and classification of images would help to take full advantage of the research potential of petroglyphs in southern Scandinavia and elsewhere. We, therefore, attempted to train a model that locates and classifies image objects using faster region-based convolutional neural network (Faster-RCNN) based on data produced by a novel method to improve visualizing the content of 3D documentations. A newly created layer of 3D rock art documentation provides the best data currently available and has reduced inscribed bias compared to older methods. Several models were trained based on input images annotated with bounding boxes produced with different parameters to find the best solution. The data included 4305 individual images in 408 scans of rock art sites. To enhance the models and enrich the training data, we used data augmentation and transfer learning. The successful models perform exceptionally well on boats and circles, as well as with human figures and wheels. This work was an interdisciplinary undertaking which led to important reflections about archaeology, digital humanities, and artificial intelligence. The reflections and the success represented by the trained models open novel avenues for future research on rock art

    physiCal: A physical approach to the marginalization of LIGO calibration uncertainties

    The data from ground based gravitational-wave detectors such as Advanced LIGO and Virgo must be calibrated to convert the digital output of photodetectors into a relative displacement of the test masses in the detectors, producing the quantity of interest for inference of astrophysical gravitational wave sources. Both statistical uncertainties and systematic errors are associated with the calibration process, which would in turn affect the analysis of detected sources, if not accounted for. Currently, source characterization algorithms either entirely neglect the possibility of calibration uncertainties or account for them in a way that does not use knowledge of the calibration process itself. We present physiCal, a new approach to account for calibration errors during the source characterization step, which directly uses all the information available about the instrument calibration process. Rather than modeling the overall detector's response function, we consider the individual components that contribute to the response. We implement this method and apply it to the compact binaries detected by LIGO and Virgo during the second observation run, as well as to simulated binary neutron stars for which the sky position and distance are known exactly. We find that the physiCal model performs as well as the method currently used within the LIGO-Virgo collaboration, but additionally it enables improving the measurement of specific components of the instrument control through astrophysical calibration.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure

    Code switching in the ESL classroom: the multilingual students’ perspectives

    Code switching has become a common phenomenon ESL classroom where multilingualism is the norm. It is an evitable especially in Sabah Malaysia where multilingual learners are predominantly occupying the classrooms. Although, the method and techniques of English language teaching are consistently transformed, but the potential role of code switching is worth to be considered. This study is driven by the three objectives. First, to investigate the reasons to code switch. Second, it investigates the frequency of code switching and third to investigate the multilingual students’ perception on the use of code switching in the ESL classroom. The qualitative research approach was used to collect data from ten students of a community college in Sabah via the interview method. The findings of this study indicated that these students had a positive perception regarding code switching and they were using it to translate meaning from English to Malay or Sabah Malay dialect (SMD). In terms of frequency to code switch, the students asserted that they ‘always’ code switched in the ESL classroom. Malay or Sabah Malay dialect (SMD) was the domain language used in code switching. The students, perceived code switching as an alternative interaction tool and benefited from the intermittent use of other languages during the ESL classes. It is considerable to allow code switching in the multilingual classroom to develop the students ‘speaking confidence. Further research is recommended to explore the practice of code switching among the multilingual speakers in different domains such as home, work, and enterprising in Sabah

    Metabolic signatures in the conversion from gestational diabetes mellitus to postpartum abnormal glucose metabolism : a pilot study in Asian women

    We aimed to identify serum metabolites related to abnormal glucose metabolism (AGM) among women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). The study recruited 50 women diagnosed with GDM during mid-late pregnancy and 50 non-GDM matchees in a Singapore birth cohort. At the 5-year post-partum follow-up, we applied an untargeted approach to investigate the profiles of serum metabolites among all participants. We first employed OPLS-DA and logistic regression to discriminate women with and without follow-up AGM, and then applied area under the curve (AUC) to assess the incremental indicative value of metabolic signatures on AGM. We identified 23 candidate metabolites that were associated with postpartum AGM among all participants. We then narrowed down to five metabolites [p-cresol sulfate, linoleic acid, glycocholic acid, lysoPC(16:1) and lysoPC(20:3)] specifically associating with both GDM and postpartum AGM. The combined metabolites in addition to traditional risks showed a higher indicative value in AUC (0.92-0.94 vs. 0.74 of traditional risks and 0.77 of baseline diagnostic biomarkers) and R-2 (0.67-0.70 vs. 0.25 of traditional risks and 0.32 of baseline diagnostic biomarkers) in terms of AGM indication, compared with the traditional risks model and traditional risks and diagnostic biomarkers combined model. These metabolic signatures significantly increased the AUC value of AGM indication in addition to traditional risks, and might shed light on the pathophysiology underlying the transition from GDM to AGM.Peer reviewe
