    Progress in the diagnosis of lymph node metastasis in rectal cancer: a review

    Historically, the chief focus of lymph node metastasis research has been molecular and clinical studies of a few essential pathways and genes. Recent years have seen a rapid accumulation of massive omics and imaging data catalyzed by the rapid development of advanced technologies. This rapid increase in data has driven improvements in the accuracy of diagnosis of lymph node metastasis, and its analysis further demands new methods and the opportunity to provide novel insights for basic research. In fact, the combination of omics data, imaging data, clinical medicine, and diagnostic methods has led to notable advances in our basic understanding and transformation of lymph node metastases in rectal cancer. Higher levels of integration will require a concerted effort among data scientists and clinicians.     Single-image based deep learning for precise atomic defects identification

    Defect engineering has been profoundly employed to confer desirable functionality to materials that pristine lattices inherently lack. Although single atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) images are widely accessible for defect engineering, harnessing atomic-scale images containing various defects through traditional image analysis methods is hindered by random noise and human bias. Yet the rise of deep learning (DL) offering an alternative approach, its widespread application is primarily restricted by the need for large amounts of training data with labeled ground truth. In this study, we propose a two-stage method to address the problems of high annotation cost and image noise in the detection of atomic defects in monolayer 2D materials. In the first stage, to tackle the issue of data scarcity, we employ a two-state transformation network based on U-GAT-IT for adding realistic noise to simulated images with pre-located ground truth labels, thereby infinitely expanding the training dataset. In the second stage, atomic defects in monolayer 2D materials are effectively detected with high accuracy using U-Net models trained with the data generated in the first stage, avoiding random noise and human bias issues. In both stages, we utilize segmented unit-cell-level images to simplify the model's task and enhance its accuracy. Our results demonstrate that not only sulfur vacancies, we are also able to visualize oxygen dopants in monolayer MoS2, which are usually overwhelmed by random background noise. As the training was based on a few segmented unit-cell-level realistic images, this method can be readily extended to other 2D materials. Therefore, our results outline novel ways to train the model with minimized datasets, offering great opportunities to fully exploit the power of machine learning (ML) applicable to a broad materials science community

    Off-line evaluation of indoor positioning systems in different scenarios: the experiences from IPIN 2020 competition

    Every year, for ten years now, the IPIN competition has aimed at evaluating real-world indoor localisation systems by testing them in a realistic environment, with realistic movement, using the EvAAL framework. The competition provided a unique overview of the state-of-the-art of systems, technologies, and methods for indoor positioning and navigation purposes. Through fair comparison of the performance achieved by each system, the competition was able to identify the most promising approaches and to pinpoint the most critical working conditions. In 2020, the competition included 5 diverse off-site off-site Tracks, each resembling real use cases and challenges for indoor positioning. The results in terms of participation and accuracy of the proposed systems have been encouraging. The best performing competitors obtained a third quartile of error of 1 m for the Smartphone Track and 0.5 m for the Foot-mounted IMU Track. While not running on physical systems, but only as algorithms, these results represent impressive achievements.Track 3 organizers were supported by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska Curie Grant 813278 (A-WEAR: A network for dynamic WEarable Applications with pRivacy constraints), MICROCEBUS (MICINN, ref.     Effect of Enyzmes on the Quality and Predicting Glycaemic Response of Chinese Steamed Bread

    The present study investigates the individual and interactional effects of α-amylase (6 and 10 ppm), xylanase (70 and 120 ppm) and cellulase (35 and 60 ppm) on the physicochemical characteristics and nutritional quality of Chinese steamed bread (CSB) incorporated with 15% oat bran. As a result, the single enzyme can significantly improve the specific volume and texture of CSB. Compared to the single enzyme, the combined enzymes improved the specific volume of CSB up to the highest value (2.51 mL/g) and decreased the hardness to the minimum value (233.61 g) when the concentration was 6, 70 and 35 ppm. With respect to chemical and nutritional properties, the addition of single enzyme had no great changes, while the combined enzymes (6, 70 and 35 ppm) significantly (p < 0.05) decreased the total starch from 37.52 to 34.11% and hence increased the area under the reducing sugar release curve during 2 h in vitro digestion (AUC) from 344.61 to 371.26. Consequently, enzymes combination can significantly improve the quality of oat bran CSB whereas reduce the nutritional value of oat bran CSB

    Valid Probabilistic Predictions for Ginseng with Venn Machines Using Electronic Nose

    In the application of electronic noses (E-noses), probabilistic prediction is a good way to estimate how confident we are about our prediction. In this work, a homemade E-nose system embedded with 16 metal-oxide semi-conductive gas sensors was used to discriminate nine kinds of ginsengs of different species or production places. A flexible machine learning framework, Venn machine (VM) was introduced to make probabilistic predictions for each prediction. Three Venn predictors were developed based on three classical probabilistic prediction methods (Platt’s method, Softmax regression and Naive Bayes). Three Venn predictors and three classical probabilistic prediction methods were compared in aspect of classification rate and especially the validity of estimated probability. A best classification rate of 88.57% was achieved with Platt’s method in offline mode, and the classification rate of VM-SVM (Venn machine based on Support Vector Machine) was 86.35%, just 2.22% lower. The validity of Venn predictors performed better than that of corresponding classical probabilistic prediction methods. The validity of VM-SVM was superior to the other methods. The results demonstrated that Venn machine is a flexible tool to make precise and valid probabilistic prediction in the application of E-nose, and VM-SVM achieved the best performance for the probabilistic prediction of ginseng samples
