Chemical functionalization of graphene oxide for improving mechanical and thermal properties of polyurethane composites

    Get PDF
Graphene oxide (GO) was chemically functionalized to manufacture polyurethane (PU) composites with improved mechanical and thermal properties. In order to achieve a well exfoliated and stable GO suspension in organic solvent, 4, 4′- methylenebis(phenyl isocyanate) and polycaprolactone diol – two monomers used to synthesize polyurethane – were employed to functionalize GO sequentially. The obtained functionalized GO (FGO) could form homogeneous dispersions in DMF solvent and the PU matrix, as well as provide a good compatibility with the latter. The most efficient improvement in mechanical properties was achieved when 0.4 wt% FGO was added into the PU matrix, corresponding to increases in the tensile stress, elongation at break and toughness by 34.2%, 27.6% and 64.5%, respectively (compared with those of PU). Regarding the thermal stability, FGO/PU 1 wt% showed the largest enhancement, with T2% and T50% 16 °C and 21 °C higher than those for PU, respectively. A significant improvement in both mechanical properties and thermal stability of FGO/PU composites should be attributed to homogeneous dispersion of FGO in the PU matrix and strong interfacial interaction between them

A Remarkable New Species of <i>Liparis</i> (Orchidaceae) from China and Its Phylogenetic Implications

    Get PDF
<div><p>In the present study, we formally describe <i>Liparis pingxiangensis</i> as a new species from Guangxi, China on the basis of morphological and molecular phylogenetic analyses. It is easily distinguished from closely related species by strongly curved column without column wings, and broadly rhombic-elliptic lip with 2 uncinate calli at the base. In particular, it differs most markedly from its congeners in possessing two pollinia attached by long and prominent caudicles (not stipes), to a distinct sticky disc. This type of pollinarium, as far as we know, is not found in any other species of <i>Liparis</i>, and is also unique among the orchids with waxy pollinia. We then proceeded to a phylogenetic analysis to ascertain the systematic position of this enigmatic species. Molecular study based on nuclear ribosomal ITS and plastid <i>mat</i>K DNA sequence data supports <i>L. pingxiangensis</i> as a distinct species, which forms an independent lineage sister to <i>L. nervosa</i> and its allies (93% BS, 1.00 BPP). In the light of previous work, the findings have important implications for a better understanding of the well-supported pattern mainly based on vegetative features in Malaxideae.</p></div

Ultrastretchable and Self-Healing Double-Network Hydrogel for 3D Printing and Strain Sensor

    No full text
On the basis of the thermoreversible sol–gel transition behavior of κ-carrageenan in water, a double-network (DN) hydrogel has been fabricated by combining an ionically cross-linked κ-carrageenan network with a covalently cross-linked polyacrylamide (PAAm) network. The κ-carrageenan/PAAm DN hydrogel demonstrated an excellent recoverability and significant self-healing capability (even when notched). More importantly, the warm pregel solution of κ-carrageenan/AAm can be used as an ink of a three-dimensional (3D) printer to print complex 3D structures with remarkable mechanical strength after UV exposure. Furthermore, the κ-carrageenan/PAAm DN hydrogel exhibited a great strain sensitivity with a gauge factor of 0.63 at the strain of 1000%, and thus, the hydrogel can be used as sensitive strain sensors for applications in robotics and human motion detection
