TimeMachine: Timeline Generation for Knowledge-Base Entities
We present a method called TIMEMACHINE to generate a timeline of events and
relations for entities in a knowledge base. For example for an actor, such a
timeline should show the most important professional and personal milestones
and relationships such as works, awards, collaborations, and family
relationships. We develop three orthogonal timeline quality criteria that an
ideal timeline should satisfy: (1) it shows events that are relevant to the
entity; (2) it shows events that are temporally diverse, so they distribute
along the time axis, avoiding visual crowding and allowing for easy user
interaction, such as zooming in and out; and (3) it shows events that are
content diverse, so they contain many different types of events (e.g., for an
actor, it should show movies and marriages and awards, not just movies). We
present an algorithm to generate such timelines for a given time period and
screen size, based on submodular optimization and web-co-occurrence statistics
with provable performance guarantees. A series of user studies using Mechanical
Turk shows that all three quality criteria are crucial to produce quality
timelines and that our algorithm significantly outperforms various baseline and
state-of-the-art methods.Comment: To appear at ACM SIGKDD KDD'15. 12pp, 7 fig. With appendix. Demo and

Galaxy alignment on large and small scales
Galaxies are not randomly distributed across the universe but showing
different kinds of alignment on different scales. On small scales satellite
galaxies have a tendency to distribute along the major axis of the central
galaxy, with dependence on galaxy properties that both red satellites and
centrals have stronger alignment than their blue counterparts. On large scales,
it is found that the major axes of Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs) have
correlation up to 30Mpc/h. Using hydro-dynamical simulation with star
formation, we investigate the origin of galaxy alignment on different scales.
It is found that most red satellite galaxies stay in the inner region of dark
matter halo inside which the shape of central galaxy is well aligned with the
dark matter distribution. Red centrals have stronger alignment than blue ones
as they live in massive haloes and the central galaxy-halo alignment increases
with halo mass. On large scales, the alignment of LRGs is also from the
galaxy-halo shape correlation, but with some extent of mis-alignment. The
massive haloes have stronger alignment than haloes in filament which connect
massive haloes. This is contrary to the naive expectation that cosmic filament
is the cause of halo alignment.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, To appear in the proceedings of the IAU Symposium

Phase dynamics of inductively coupled intrinsic Josephson junctions and terahertz electromagnetic radiation
The Josephson effects associated with quantum tunneling of Cooper pairs
manifest as nonlinear relations between the superconductivity phase difference
and the bias current and voltage. Many novel phenomena appear, such as Shapiro
steps in dc cuurent-voltage (IV) characteristics of a Josephson junction under
microwave shining, which can be used as a voltage standard. Inversely, the
Josephson effects provide a unique way to generate high-frequency
electromagnetic (EM) radiation by dc bias voltage. The discovery of cuprate
high-Tc superconductors accelerated the effort to develop novel source of EM
waves based on a stack of atomically dense-packed intrinsic Josephson junctions
(IJJs), since the large superconductivity gap covers the whole terahertz
frequency band. Very recently, strong and coherent terahertz radiations have
been successfully generated from a mesa structure of
single crystal which works both as the source
of energy gain and as the cavity for resonance. It is then found theoretically
that, due to huge inductive coupling of IJJs produced by the nanometer junction
separation and the large London penetration depth of order of of
the material, a novel dynamic state is stabilized in the coupled sine-Gordon
system, in which kinks in phase differences are developed responding
to the standing wave of Josephson plasma and are stacked alternatively in the
c-axis. This novel solution of the inductively coupled sine-Gordon equations
captures the important features of experimental observations. The theory
predicts an optimal radiation power larger than the one available to date by
orders of magnitude, and thus suggests the technological relevance of the
phenomena.Comment: review article (69 pages, 30 figures
Wilson ratio of Fermi gases in one dimension
We calculate the Wilson ratio of the one-dimensional Fermi gas with spin
imbalance. The Wilson ratio of attractively interacting fermions is solely
determined by the density stiffness and sound velocity of pairs and of excess
fermions for the two-component Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) phase. The ratio
exhibits anomalous enhancement at the two critical points due to the sudden
change in the density of states. Despite a breakdown of the quasiparticle
description in one dimension, two important features of the Fermi liquid are
retained, namely the specific heat is linearly proportional to temperature
whereas the susceptibility is independent of temperature. In contrast to the
phenomenological TLL parameter, the Wilson ratio provides a powerful parameter
for testing universal quantum liquids of interacting fermions in one, two and
three dimensions.Comment: 5+2 pages, 4+1 figures, Eq. (4) is proved, figures were refine
Effect of inter-subsystem couplings on the evolution of composite systems
The effect of inter-subsystem coupling on the adiabaticity of composite
systems and that of its subsystems is investigated. Similar to the adiabatic
evolution defined for pure states, non-transitional evolution for mixed states
is introduced; conditions for the non-transitional evolution are derived and
discussed. An example that describes two coupled qubits is presented to detail
the general presentation. The effects due to non-adiabatic evolution on the
geometric phase are also presented and discussed.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figur
