    A Review of Decades of the Opportunities and Challenges for Digital Mobile E-Learning in Taiwan

    This study examines the current status of digital mobile e-learning in Taiwan using a literature review. Taiwan’s digital mobile e-learning implementation plan is divided into two plans: the first targets high schools and higher vocational education, while the second targets elementary and junior high schools. Previous research shows that digital mobile e-learning can improve school efficiency and promote teaching innovation in Taiwanese high schools. Factors, such as school size, teacher-student ratio, number of tablet PCs, technical teacher ratio, total equipment expenses, and various school attributes are essential in influencing schools’ willingness to adopt digital mobile e-learning. Public schools have better operational efficiency than private schools, possibly because of the funding provided for accessory equipment. Therefore, public high schools may be better equipped to promote mobile e-learning environments and improve both teaching quality and operational efficiency

    Exploring the quality of life and its related factors among the elderly

    As the rapidly growing population of elderly people in the world that means they would be facing all challenges to their quality of life. As age increases, quality of life is often reported to decline. They are also at risk of mental illness, neurological disorder and more health problems affecting their quality of life. Depression is a common mental disorder among the elderly.  The objective of this study is to understand the relationship between depression and quality of life among the elderly in an Indonesian nursing home. This research use the descriptive correlational and cross-sectional design was applied. There were 114 elderly recruited by convenient sampling. The results of this study showed the mean age of the elderly was 71.2 at the time of data collection ranging from 65 to 76 years old. The variables associated with quality of life were age, gender, education, marital status, ethnicity, chronic disease, and depression status. Moreover, the study found that, as predictors, the variables that influenced the quality of life according to relevance were: age, depression status, and educational level. Age and depression status is recognized as significant predictors of the quality of life among the elderly in an Indonesian nursing home.     Applying Information Technology to Patient Safety Reporting System

    After a nursing staff of North Town Woman & Children\u27s Hospital made an error injection and caused one infant dead and six injured in 2002, the Taiwan government pays more attention to patient safety. Firstly, the Department of Health (DOH) established the Patient Safety Committee in February, 2003 to promote several patients’ safety activities and education training. Secondly, the committee is actively planning a nationwide reporting system of patient safety to summarize the common causes of medical errors. Most hospitals (about 70%) have not utilized information technology to construct a patient safety reporting system. The conventional reporting mechanism is to fill a paper form and circulate through out the organization. Therefore, in order to make the greater efficiency and effectiveness on a reporting system, this research develops a Patient Safety Reporting System (PSRS) used inside the hospital to solve the disadvantages of conventional reporting mechanism and enhance patient safety and medical quality. The prototyping method was used to develop the PSRS to assure the communication between users and system designers about the actual system to be implemented. The results show that the PSRS has higher satisfaction than that of the traditional paper method. The PSRS not only save on time and man power for reporting but also improve the anonymity and security of reporting process. These advantages have a positive effect on staffs’ willingness of reporting. The experience of developing this system could be used as reference for other hospitals to develop their own PSR

    A Study of the Cognition-Action Gap in Knowledge Management

    We investigated three types of volitional control mechanisms that may impact people’s knowledge management (KM) practices. Our results show that, when employing KM, people do not always perform in a manner consis- tent with their beliefs concerning attitudes and intentions. This cognition-behavior inconsistency can be ex- plained by volitional control mechanisms. Specifically, both perceived self-efficacy (Bandura 1997) and action control (Kuhl and Bechmänn 1985) play a role in motivating individuals to share and use knowledge, while perceived behavioral control does not. In addition, action/state orientation moderates a person’s enactment of subjective norm and self-efficacy beliefs into intentions just as it moderates enactment of perceived behavioral control belief into behaviors. These results have important theoretical and managerial implication

    Evaluation of Antioxidant and Free Radical Scavenging Capacities of Polyphenolics from Pods of Caesalpinia pulcherrima

    Thirteen polyphenolics were isolated from fresh pods of Caesalpinia pulcherrima using various methods of column chromatography. The structures of these polyphenolics were elucidated as gallic acid (1), methyl gallate (2), 6-O-galloyl-d-glucoside (3), methyl 6-O-galloyl-ÎČ-d-glucoside (4), methyl 3,6-di-O-galloyl-α-d-glucopyranoside (5), gentisic acid 5-O-α-d-(6â€Č-O-galloyl)glucopyranoside (6), guaiacylglycerol 4-O-ÎČ-d-(6â€Č-O-galloyl)glucopyranoside (7), 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenol 1-O-ÎČ-d-(6â€Č-O-galloyl) glucopyranoside (8), (+)-gallocatechin (9), (+)-catechin (10), (+)-gallocatechin 3-O-gallate (11), myricetin 3-rhamnoside (12), and ampelopsin (13). All isolated compounds were tested for their antioxidant activities in the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), hydroxyl, and peroxynitrite radicals scavenging assays. Among those compounds, 11, 12, and 2 exhibited the best DPPH-, hydroxyl-, and peroxynitrite radical-scavenging activities, respectively. Compound 7 is a new compound, and possesses better scavenging activities towards DPPH but has equivalent hydroxyl radical scavenging activity when compared to BHT. The paper is the first report on free radical scavenging properties of components of the fresh pods of Caesalpinia pulcherrima. The results obtained from the current study indicate that the free radical scavenging property of fresh pods of Caesalpinia pulcherrima may be one of the mechanisms by which this herbal medicine is effective in several free radical mediated diseases

    Factors Related to Health Status among Nurses in Taiwan

    Nurses play an important role in healthcare institutions. Improving the nurses’ health status and increasing nurses’ enthusiasm in clinical nursing can improve the quality of healthcare. The purposes of this study include: (1) to understand the basic characteristics of the participants, and health status; (2) to analyze the differences in health status between different demographic of the participants.The study adopted stratified and cluster sampling, and used a cross-sectional descriptive design. A total of 256 registered nurses and licensed vocational nurses were recruited for the study who have been working in the position for at least one year in a medical center in northern Taiwan. Research tools included basic properties, and the Chinese Health Questionnaire. Data were analyzed with SPSS for Windows 187.0 (Chinese) software for descriptive statistics, t-test, and one-way ANOVA.To summarize, we found the following: (1) Participants’ average age was 29.8 years, and most participants were single, childless women with bachelor’s degrees or above, not living with their in-laws, N1 ranked, working on shift, and not participating in health courses. (3) Participants’ health status were found significant differences among gender, education degree, and whether or not they had children.  The findings of this study provide a reference for management decision making

    TLR7 and TLR8 Gene Variations and Susceptibility to Hepatitis C Virus Infection

    Toll-like receptors (TLRs) play pivotal roles in the innate immune system and control inflammatory responses and adaptive immunity. We previously evaluated associations between TLR7 and TLR8 gene SNPs and susceptibility to hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Our results suggested that TLR7IVS2-151G and TLR8-129G alleles were present at higher frequency in males of an HCV-infected group as compared to a control group (24.1% vs. 14.4%, p = 0.028; 17.6% vs. 6.8%, p = 0.004, respectively). Based upon their recognition of single stranded viral RNA, this suggested that TLR7 and TLR8 played a significant role in anti-HCV immune responses. Here, we studied the functional effects of these polymorphisms by analyzing the mRNA expressions of TLR7 and TLR8 and cytokine production induced ex vivo by TLR7- and TLR8-specific agonists using whole blood of subjects with different genotypes. The percentage of CD14+ cells from those with an AG haplotype that expressed TLR7 and TLR8 was significantly lower, but higher in intensity compared to cells from those with GG and AC haplotypes. Cells from those with an AG haplotype produced more IFN-α and less amounts of pro-inflammatory cytokines upon stimulation. This suggests that variations in TLR7 and TLR8 genes might impair immune responses during HCV infection

    Spatiotemporal analysis of air pollution and asthma patient visits in Taipei, Taiwan

    [[abstract]]Background: Buffer analyses have shown that air pollution is associated with an increased incidence of asthma, but little is known about how air pollutants affect health outside a defined buffer. The aim of this study was to better understand how air pollutants affect asthma patient visits in a metropolitan area. The study used an integrated spatial and temporal approach that included the Kriging method and the Generalized Additive Model (GAM). Results: We analyzed daily outpatient and emergency visit data from the Taiwan Bureau of National Health Insurance and air pollution data from the Taiwan Environmental Protection Administration during 2000-2002. In general, children (aged 0-15 years) had the highest number of total asthma visits. Seasonal changes of PM10, NO2, O3 and SO2 were evident. However, SO2 showed a positive correlation with the dew point (r = 0.17, p < 0.01) and temperature (r = 0.22, p < 0.01). Among the four pollutants studied, the elevation of NO2 concentration had the highest impact on asthma outpatient visits on the day that a 10% increase of concentration caused the asthma outpatient visit rate to increase by 0.30% (95% CI: 0.16%??.45%) in the four pollutant model. For emergency visits, the elevation of PM10 concentration, which occurred two days before the visits, had the most significant influence on this type of patient visit with an increase of 0.14% (95% CI: 0.01%??.28%) in the four pollutants model. The impact on the emergency visit rate was non-significant two days following exposure to the other three air pollutants. Conclusion: This preliminary study demonstrates the feasibility of an integrated spatial and temporal approach to assess the impact of air pollution on asthma patient visits. The results of this study provide a better understanding of the correlation of air pollution with asthma patient visits and demonstrate that NO2 and PM10 might have a positive impact on outpatient and emergency settings respectively. Future research is required to validate robust spatiotemporal patterns and trends
