The Triple-Alpha Process and the Anthropically Allowed Values of the Weak Scale
In multiple-universe models, the constants of nature may have different
values in different universes. Agrawal, Barr, Donoghue and Seckel have pointed
out that the Higgs mass parameter, as the only dimensionful parameter of the
standard model, is of particular interest. By considering a range of values of
this parameter, they showed that the Higgs vacuum expectation value must have a
magnitude less than 5.0 times its observed value, in order for complex
elements, and thus life, to form. In this report, we look at the effects of the
Higgs mass parameter on the triple-alpha process in stars. This process, which
is greatly enhanced by a resonance in Carbon-12, is responsible for virtually
all of the carbon production in the universe. We find that the Higgs vacuum
expectation value must have a magnitude greater than 0.90 times its observed
value in order for an appreciable amount of carbon to form, thus significantly
narrowing the allowed region of Agrawal et al.Comment: 9 pages, 1 figur
A Noisy Monte Carlo Algorithm
We propose a Monte Carlo algorithm to promote Kennedy and Kuti's linear
accept/reject algorithm which accommodates unbiased stochastic estimates of the
probability to an exact one. This is achieved by adopting the Metropolis
accept/reject steps for both the dynamical and noise configurations. We test it
on the five state model and obtain desirable results even for the case with
large noise. We also discuss its application to lattice QCD with stochastically
estimated fermion determinants.Comment: 10 pages, 1 tabl
Finite Density Algorithm in Lattice QCD -- a Canonical Ensemble Approach
I will review the finite density algorithm for lattice QCD based on finite
chemical potential and summarize the associated difficulties. I will propose a
canonical ensemble approach which projects out the finite baryon number sector
from the fermion determinant. For this algorithm to work, it requires an
efficient method for calculating the fermion determinant and a Monte Carlo
algorithm which accommodates unbiased estimate of the probability. I shall
report on the progress made along this direction with the Pad\'{e} - Z
estimator of the determinant and its implementation in the newly developed
Noisy Monte Carlo algorithm.Comment: Invited talk at Nankai Symposium on Mathematical Physics, Tianjin,

The Kentucky Noisy Monte Carlo Algorithm for Wilson Dynamical Fermions
We develop an implementation for a recently proposed Noisy Monte Carlo
approach to the simulation of lattice QCD with dynamical fermions by
incorporating the full fermion determinant directly. Our algorithm uses a
quenched gauge field update with a shifted gauge coupling to minimize
fluctuations in the trace log of the Wilson Dirac matrix. The details of tuning
the gauge coupling shift as well as results for the distribution of noisy
estimators in our implementation are given. We present data for some basic
observables from the noisy method, as well as acceptance rate information and
discuss potential autocorrelation and sign violation effects. Both the results
and the efficiency of the algorithm are compared against those of Hybrid Monte
Carlo.

Affleck-Dine baryogenesis in inflating curvaton scenario with O(TeV) mass moduli curvaton
We study the Affleck-Dine (AD) baryogenesis in the inflating curvaton
scenario, when the curvaton is a moduli field with O(TeV) mass. A
moduli field with such mass is known to be free from the Polonyi problem, and
furthermore its decay products can explain the present cold dark matter
abundance. In our scenario, it further explains the primordial curvature
perturbation and the present baryon density all together. The current
observational bound on the baryon isocurvature perturbation, which severely
constrains the AD baryogenesis with the original oscillating moduli curvaton
scenario, is shown to put practically negligible constraint if we replace the
oscillating curvaton with the inflating curvaton.Comment: 1+21pages v2: minor correction v3: included short reviews, added

Closed geodesics in Alexandrov spaces of curvature bounded from above
In this paper, we show a local energy convexity of maps into
spaces. This energy convexity allows us to extend Colding and
Minicozzi's width-sweepout construction to produce closed geodesics in any
closed Alexandrov space of curvature bounded from above, which also provides a
generalized version of the Birkhoff-Lyusternik theorem on the existence of
non-trivial closed geodesics in the Alexandrov setting.Comment: Final version, 22 pages, 2 figures, to appear in the Journal of

Quasi-Isotropization of the Inhomogeneous Mixmaster Universe Induced by an Inflationary Process
We derive a ``generic'' inhomogeneous ``bridge'' solution for a cosmological
model in the presence of a real self-interacting scalar field. This solution
connects a Kasner-like regime to an inflationary stage of evolution and
therefore provides a dynamical mechanism for the quasi-isotropization of the
universe. In the framework of a standard Arnowitt-Deser-Misner Hamiltonian
formulation of the dynamics and by adopting Misner-Chitr\`e-like variables, we
integrate the Einstein-Hamilton-Jacobi equation corresponding to a ``generic''
inhomogeneous cosmological model whose evolution is influenced by the coupling
with a bosonic field, expected to be responsible for a spontaneous symmetry
breaking configuration. The dependence of the detailed evolution of the
universe on the initial conditions is then appropriately characterized.Comment: 17 pages, no figure, to appear on PR
Modified f(G) gravity models with curvature-matter coupling
A modified f(G) gravity model with coupling between matter and geometry is
proposed, which is described by the product of the Lagrange density of the
matter and an arbitrary function of the Gauss-Bonnet term. The field equations
and the equations of motion corresponding to this model show the
non-conservation of the energy-momentum tensor, the presence of an extra-force
acting on test particles and the non-geodesic motion. Moreover, the energy
conditions and the stability criterion at de Sitter point in the modified f(G)
gravity models with curvature-matter coupling are derived, which can degenerate
to the well-known energy conditions in general relativity. Furthermore, in
order to get some insight on the meaning of these energy conditions, we apply
them to the specific models of f(G) gravity and the corresponding constraints
on the models are given. In addition, the conditions and the candidate for
late-time cosmic accelerated expansion in the modified f(G) gravity are studied
by means of conditions of power-law expansion and the equation of state of
matter less than -1/ 3 .Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure
Effects of genuine dimension-six Higgs operators
We systematically discuss the consequences of genuine dimension-six Higgs
operators. These operators are not subject to stringent constraints from
electroweak precision data. However, they can modify the couplings of the Higgs
boson to electroweak gauge bosons and, in particular, the Higgs
self-interactions. We study the sensitivity to which those couplings can be
probed at future \ee linear colliders in the sub-TeV and in the multi-TeV
range. We find that for GeV with a luminosity of 1 ab the
anomalous and couplings may be probed to about the 0.01 level, and
the anomalous coupling to about the 0.1 level.Comment: 21 pages, 17 figures; typos corrected and references adde
J/psi couplings to charmed resonances and to pi
We present an evaluation of the strong couplings JD^(*)D^(*) and
JD^(*)D^(*)pi by an effective field theory of quarks and mesons. These
couplings are necessary to calculate pi+J/psi --> D^(*)+barD^(*) cross
sections, an important background to the J/psi suppression signal in the
quark-gluon plasma. We write down the general effective lagrangian and compute
the relevant couplings in the soft pion limit and beyond.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, 2 reference added and minor comments, style
