    JAMES-STEIN TYPE COMPOUND ESTIMATION OF MULTIPLE MEAN RESPONSE FUNCTIONS AND THEIR DERIVATIVES

    Charnigo and Srinivasan originally developed compound estimators to nonparametrically estimate mean response functions and their derivatives simultaneously when there is one response variable and one covariate. The compound estimator maintains self consistency and almost optimal convergence rate. This dissertation studies, in part, compound estimation with multiple responses and/or covariates. An empirical comparison of compound estimation, local regression and spline smoothing is included, and near optimal convergence rates are established in the presence of multiple covariates. James and Stein proposed an estimator of the mean vector of a p dimensional multivariate normal distribution, which produces a smaller risk than the maximum likelihood estimator if p is at least 3. In this dissertation, we also extend their idea to a nonparametric regression setting. More specifically, we present Steinized local regression estimators of p mean response functions and their derivatives. We consider different covariance structures for the error terms, and whether or not a known upper bound for the estimation bias is assumed. We also apply Steinization to compound estimation, considering the application of Steinization to both pointwise estimators (for example, as obtained through local regression) and weight functions. Finally, the new methodology introduced in this dissertation will be demonstrated on numerical data illustrating the outcomes of a laboratory experiment in which radiation induces nanoparticles to scatter evanescent waves. The patterns of scattering, as represented by derivatives of multiple mean response functions, may be used to classify nanoparticles on their sizes and structures

Since using battery powers and wirelesscommunications, sensor nodes can be very small and easily attached at specified locations without disturbing surroundingenvironments. This makes WSN a competitive approach for data collection comparing with its wired counterpart. In this paper,we review recent advances in this research area. We first highlight the special features of data collection WSNs, by comparingwith wired data collection network and other WSN applications. With these features in mind, we then discuss issues and priorsolutions on the data gathering protocol design. Our discussion also covers different approaches for message dissemination, whichis a critical component for network control and management and greatly affects the overall performance of a data collectionWSNsystem

    By sequential techniques and mixed monotone operator, the uniqueness of positive solution for singular p-Laplacian fractional differential system with infinite-point boundary conditions is obtained. Green's function is derived, and some useful properties of Green' function are obtained. Based on these new properties, the existence of unique positive solutions is established, moreover, an iterative sequence and a convergence rate are given, which are important for practical application, and an example is given to demonstrate the validity of our main results

    Demonstration and Operation of Quantum Harmonic Oscillators in AlGaAs/GaAs Heterostructure

    The quantum harmonic oscillator (QHO), one of the most important and ubiquitous model systems in quantum mechanics, features equally spaced energy levels or eigenstates. Here we report on the design, demonstration and operation of nearly perfect QHOs in AlGaAs/GaAs heterostructure. On the basis of model calculations, we demonstrate that, when a substitutional Si donor substitutes the Ga/Al lattice site close to AlGaAs/GaAs heterointerface, a hydrogenic Si QHO, characterized by a restoring Coulomb force producing square law harmonic potential, is formed. This gives rise to QHO states with energy spacing of ~8-9 meV. We experimentally confirm this proposal by utilizing Stark effect and measuring QHO states using an aluminum single-electron transistor (SET). A sharp and fast oscillation with period of ~7-8 mV appears in addition to the regular Coulomb blockade (CB) oscillation with much larger period, for positive gate biases above 0.5 V. The observation of fast oscillation and its behavior is qualitatively consistent with our theoretical result, manifesting the harmonic motion of electrons from the QHO. Our results might establish a general principle to design, construct and manipulate QHOs in semiconductor heterostructures.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figure

    Clustering of cardiovascular behavioral risk factors and blood pressure among people diagnosed with hypertension: A nationally representative survey in China

    This study aimed to examine association between the number of behavioral risk factors and blood pressure (BP) level among a nationally representative sample of Chinese people diagnosed with hypertension. A total of 31,694 respondents aged 18+ years with diagnosed hypertension were extracted from the 2013-2014 China Chronic Disease and Risk Factor Surveillance. BP of each respondent was classified into six levels according to criteria in 2007 Guidelines for the Management of Arterial Hypertension. Information for smoking, alcohol drinking, fruit and vegetables consumption, physical inactivity, and overweight and obesity were obtained. The average number of risk factors was determined by BP level to explore potential risk factor clustering. Ten generalized proportional odds models were used to examine association between clustering of behavioral risk factors and BP level. A clear gradient between the number of behavioral risk factors and BP level was observed for men and women (P \u3c 0.05 for both genders). BP level for men and women was much likely to upgrade as number of risk factors accumulated (P \u3c 0.01 for 10 models). Behavioral modifications may decrease BP, and combinations of two or more behavioral interventions could potentially result in even better BP management among people diagnosed with hypertension
