Implicações do estresse oxidativo no ovário e embrião mamífero
As espécies reativas de oxigênio (EROs) ou de nitrogênio (ERN) ou radicais livres são produtos do metabolismo orgânico normal e seu acúmulo pode gerar o estresse oxidativo. Este, por sua vez, causa injúrias celulares podendo levá-las à morte, estando este processo envolvido com a degeneração e/ou apoptose celular durante o desenvolvimento embrionário e em diferentes órgãos, como o ovário mamífero. No ovário de camundongas são produzidas EROs durante a regressão luteal que estão envolvidas no processo de ativação folicular e retomada espontânea da meiose em oócitos. Embora sejam produzidos durante processos fisiológicos, o acúmulo de radicais livres no ovário mamífero pode desencadear patologias. No embrião, os radicais livres são produzidos normalmente devido ao metabolismo normal. Porém, em ambientes in vitro com altas concentrações de oxigênio, o desenvolvimento do embrião pode ser prejudicado. O óxido nítrico é considerado um radical livre e participa de processos patológicos e fisiológicos como inflamação, ovulação, implantação embrionária e contração uterina. Para proteger os sistemas biológicos dos danos celulares causados pelos radicais livres, o organismo utiliza enzimas como catalase, superóxido-dismutase e glutationa peroxidase, e mecanismos que incluem substâncias antioxidantes tais como vitamina C, vitamina E, β-caroteno dentre outras. 
Effect of Elevated Intra-Abdominal Pressure on Portal Vein and Superior Mesenteric Artery Blood Flow in a Rat
Abstract Aim: Recent clinical experience suggests that minimal access portoenterostomy (the Kasai procedure) for biliary atresia leads to transplantation sooner, compared to the traditional open approach. It should be emphasized that elevated intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) may reduce hepatic and portal blood flow and thus may cause histologic liver damage. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of IAP on blood flow in the portal vein (PV), compared to the superior mesenteric artery (SMA), and on the systemic mean arterial blood pressure (MABP). Materials and Methods: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were anesthetized with intraperitoneal ketamine (90 mg per kg) and xylasine (13 mg per kg). Polyethylene catheters (PE-50) were introduced into the right carotid artery for the measurement of MABP. After a midline laparotomy, the SMA and PV were isolated. Ultrasonic blood-flow probes were placed on the vessels for the continuous measurement of regional blood flow. Two large-caliber percutaneous peripheral intravenous catheters were introduced into the peritoneal cavity for inflation of air and for the measurement of IAP. The time course of MABP and SMA and PV flow as well as the relationship between IAP and SMA and PV flow were determined. Results: Although all three hemodynamic parameters decreased with the increase in the IAP, the most significant changes were observed in PV blood flow. IAP at 3 mm Hg resulted in a 26% decrease in PV flow (P < 0.05), a 19% decrease in SMA flow (P < 0.05), and an 11% decrease in MABP (P < 0.05). IAP at 6 mm Hg caused a two-fold decrease in PV flow (P < 0.05), a 30% decrease in SMA flow (P < 0.05), and a 19% decrease in MABP (P < 0.05). There were no changes in the time course of MABP and PV and SMA flow. PV and SMA flow returned to normal values immediately after abdominal deflation. Conclusions: Persistent IAP decreased MABP, SMA, and, especially, PV flow by 50%. We speculate that in biliary atresia patients with already present liver dysfunction, decrease in SMA flow and even a greater decrease in PV flow from increased IAP, which occurs during a laparoscopic Kasai procedure, may further compromise liver function. Mach's Principle and the Origin of Inertia
The current status of Mach's principle is discussed within the context of
general relativity. The inertial properties of a particle are determined by its
mass and spin, since these characterize the irreducible unitary representations
of the inhomogeneous Lorentz group. The origin of the inertia of mass and
intrinsic spin are discussed and the inertia of intrinsic spin is studied via
the coupling of intrinsic spin with rotation. The implications of spin-rotation
coupling and the possibility of history dependence and nonlocality in

Duration of temporary catheter use for hemodialysis: an observational, prospective evaluation of renal units in Brazil
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>For chronic hemodialysis, the ideal permanent vascular access is the arteriovenous fistula (AVF). Temporary catheters should be reserved for acute dialysis needs. The AVF is associated with lower infection rates, better clinical results, and a higher quality of life and survival when compared to temporary catheters. In Brazil, the proportion of patients with temporary catheters for more than 3 months from the beginning of therapy is used as an evaluation of the quality of renal units. The aim of this study is to evaluate factors associated with the time between the beginning of hemodialysis with temporary catheters and the placement of the first arteriovenous fistula in Brazil.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This is an observational, prospective non-concurrent study using national administrative registries of all patients financed by the public health system who began renal replacement therapy (RRT) between 2000 and 2004 in Brazil. Incident patients were eligible who had hemodialysis for the first time. Patients were excluded who: had hemodialysis reportedly started after the date of death (inconsistent database); were younger than 18 years old; had HIV; had no record of the first dialysis unit; and were dialyzed in units with less than twenty patients. To evaluate individual and renal unit factors associated with the event of interest, the frailty model was used (N = 55,589).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Among the 23,824 patients (42.9%) who underwent fistula placement in the period of the study, 18.2% maintained the temporary catheter for more than three months until the fistula creation. The analysis identified five statistically significant factors associated with longer time until first fistula: higher age (Hazard-risk - HR 0.99, 95% CI 0.99-1.00); having hypertension and cardiovascular diseases (HR 0.94, 95% CI 0.9-0.98) as the cause of chronic renal disease; residing in capitals cities (HR 0.92, 95% CI 0.9-0.95) and certain regions in Brazil - South (HR 0.83, 95% CI 0.8-0.87), Midwest (HR 0.88, 95% CI 0.83-0.94), Northeast (HR 0.91, 95% CI 0.88-0.94), or North (HR 0.88, 95% CI 0.83-0.94) and the type of renal unit (public or private).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Monitoring the provision of arteriovenous fistulas in renal units could improve the care given to patients with end stage renal disease.</p
SEASONAL DISTRIBUTION OF MALARIA VECTORS (DIPTERA: CULICIDAE) IN RURAL LOCALITIES OF PORTO VELHO, RONDÔNIA, BRAZILIAN AMAZON
We conducted a survey of the malaria vectors in an area where a power line had been constructed, between the municipalities of Porto Velho and Rio Branco, in the states of Rondônia and Acre, respectively. The present paper relates to the results of the survey of Anopheles fauna conducted in the state of Rondônia. Mosquito field collections were performed in six villages along the federal highway BR 364 in the municipality of Porto Velho, namely Porto Velho, Jaci Paraná, Mutum Paraná, Vila Abunã, Vista Alegre do Abunã, and Extrema. Mosquito captures were performed at three distinct sites in each locality during the months of February, July, and October 2011 using a protected human-landing catch method; outdoor and indoor captures were conducted simultaneously at each site for six hours. In the six sampled areas, we captured 2,185 mosquitoes belonging to seven Anopheles species. Of these specimens, 95.1% consisted of Anopheles darlingi, 1.8% An. triannulatus l.s., 1.7% An. deaneorum, 0.8% An. konderi l.s., 0.4 An. braziliensis, 0.1% An. albitarsis l.s., and 0.1% An. benarrochi. An. darlingi was the only species found in all localities; the remaining species occurred in sites with specific characteristics
