Properties of kinematic singularities
The locally rotationally symmetric tilted perfect fluid Bianchi type V
cosmological model provides examples of future geodesically complete spacetimes
that admit a `kinematic singularity' at which the fluid congruence is
inextendible but all frame components of the Weyl and Ricci tensors remain
bounded. We show that for any positive integer n there are examples of Bianchi
type V spacetimes admitting a kinematic singularity such that the covariant
derivatives of the Weyl and Ricci tensors up to the n-th order also stay
bounded. We briefly discuss singularities in classical spacetimes.Comment: 13 pages. Published version. One sentence from version 2 correcte
Quantum random number generation for 1.25 GHz quantum key distribution systems
Security proofs of quantum key distribution (QKD) systems usually assume that
the users have access to source of perfect randomness. State-of-the-art QKD
systems run at frequencies in the GHz range, requiring a sustained GHz rate of
generation and acquisition of quantum random numbers. In this paper we
demonstrate such a high speed random number generator. The entropy source is
based on amplified spontaneous emission from an erbium-doped fibre, which is
directly acquired using a standard small form-factor pluggable (SFP) module.
The module connects to the Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) of a QKD
system. A real-time randomness extractor is implemented in the FPGA and
achieves a sustained rate of 1.25 Gbps of provably random bits.Comment: 6 pages, 8 figure
Orbital and valley state spectra of a few-electron silicon quantum dot
Understanding interactions between orbital and valley quantum states in
silicon nanodevices is crucial in assessing the prospects of spin-based qubits.
We study the energy spectra of a few-electron silicon metal-oxide-semiconductor
quantum dot using dynamic charge sensing and pulsed-voltage spectroscopy. The
occupancy of the quantum dot is probed down to the single-electron level using
a nearby single-electron transistor as a charge sensor. The energy of the first
orbital excited state is found to decrease rapidly as the electron occupancy
increases from N=1 to 4. By monitoring the sequential spin filling of the dot
we extract a valley splitting of ~230 {\mu}eV, irrespective of electron number.
This indicates that favorable conditions for qubit operation are in place in
the few-electron regime.Comment: 4 figure
Quantum Direct Communication with Authentication
We propose two Quantum Direct Communication (QDC) protocols with user
authentication. Users can identify each other by checking the correlation of
Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states. Alice can directly send a secret
message to Bob using the remaining GHZ states after authentication. Our second
QDC protocol can be used even though there is no quantum link between Alice and
Bob. The security of the transmitted message is guaranteed by properties of
entanglement of GHZ states.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures and 2 table
Multiphoton entanglement through a Bell multiport beam splitter
Multiphoton entanglement is an important resource for linear optics quantum
computing. Here we show that a wide range of highly entangled multiphoton
states, including W-states, can be prepared by interfering single photons
inside a Bell multiport beam splitter and using postselection. A successful
state preparation is indicated by the collection of one photon per output port.
An advantage of the Bell multiport beam splitter is that it redirects the
photons without changing their inner degrees of freedom. The described setup
can therefore be used to generate polarisation, time-bin and frequency
multiphoton entanglement, even when using only a single photon source.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, carefully revised version, references adde
Can We See Lorentz-Violating Vector Fields in the CMB?
We investigate the perturbation theory of a fixed-norm, timelike
Lorentz-violating vector field. After consistently quantizing the vector field
to put constraints on its parameters, we compute the primordial spectra of
perturbations generated by inflation in the presence of this vector field. We
find that its perturbations are sourced by the perturbations of the inflaton;
without the inflaton perturbation the vector field perturbations decay away
leaving no primordial spectra of perturbations. Since the inflaton perturbation
does not have a spin-1 component, the vector field generically does not
generate any spin-1 ``vector-type'' perturbations. Nevertheless, it will modify
the amplitude of both the spin-0 ``scalar-type'' and spin-2 ``tensor-type''
perturbation spectra, leading to violations of the inflationary consistency
relationship.Comment: 36 pages, 1 fig, RevTex4, Submitted to PR
New explicit spike solution -- non-local component of the generalized Mixmaster attractor
By applying a standard solution-generating transformation to an arbitrary
vacuum Bianchi type II solution, one generates a new solution with spikes
commonly observed in numerical simulations. It is conjectured that the spike
solution is part of the generalized Mixmaster attractor.Comment: Significantly revised. Colour figures simplified to accommodate
