    A Machine Learning Approach to Predicting Single Event Upsets

    A single event upset (SEU) is a critical soft error that occurs in semiconductor devices on exposure to ionising particles from space environments. SEUs cause bit flips in the memory component of semiconductors. This creates a multitude of safety hazards as stored information becomes less reliable. Currently, SEUs are only detected several hours after their occurrence. CREMER, the model presented in this paper, predicts SEUs in advance using machine learning. CREMER uses only positional data to predict SEU occurrence, making it robust, inexpensive and scalable. Upon implementation, the improved reliability of memory devices will create a digitally safer environment onboard space vehicles

    Fluctuation of BCR-ABL1 real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction in International Scale (qPCRIS ) level below major molecular response (MMR) (0.1%IS ) is a known phenomenon after stopping tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) in chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) patients who are attempting treatment free remission (TFR).     A randomized control trial comparing peginterferon-α-2a versus observation after stopping tyrosine kinase inhibitor in chronic myeloid leukemia with deep molecular response for at least two years

    Background: There is much advancement in treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) since the approval of first tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI), imatinib, by US FDA in 2001. One of them is definitely the concept of stopping TKI, starting at the CML patients who have achieved deep molecular response (MR) of MR4.5 for a reasonable long period of at least two years, pioneered by the researchers from French and Australia. Meanwhile, interferon, the standard treatment of CML before the era of TKI, showed that interferon-responded patients may indeed retain the response once interferon was withdrawn via interferon-induced immunity towards the leukemic clone. This is further supported by stop trial in Japan, in which after stopping TKI, interferon was given for 2 years and it showed a higher drug-free rate compared to stop trial from French and Australia. Hence, it is logical to postulate the use of interferon after TKI was stopped when patients have attained deep MR for more than two years will increase the percentage of patients remain TKI-free on follow-up. Materials and Methods: This is a multi-center randomized controlled trial. Adult CML patients, diagnosed in chronic phase, treated with ongoing TKI for at least 3 years without previous history of TKI failure and have achieved stable deep MR on International Scale for ≥2 years with at least 2 readings of MR4.5 (including the latest before study entry), were randomized into 2 arms: (1) peginterferon-α-2a, subcutaneous weekly, starting at 180 mcg, or (2) observation. Disease is monitored by PCR (centralized in Ampang Hospital) at monthly for the first year, 2 monthly for the second year and 3 monthly for the third year. Relapse is defined as either (i) one reading of loss of major MR, i.e. reading of >0.1% IS and confirmed by second analysis taken 1 month later if the first analysis point reading is ≤1% IS, or (ii) positivity of BCR-ABL1 transcripts, as confirmed by a second analysis point, indicating the increase (at least 1 log) in relation to the first analysis point at two successive assessments. Quality of Life is assessed using EORTC QLO-C30. Results: At the time of writing, total of 8 patients were randomized, 5 into peginterferon arm, 3 into observation arm, all were on imatinib, M:F = 4:4, Malay: Chinese:Indian = 3:4:1, median age 49.5 (range 25-58), median follow-up 4 months (range 1-6) and none of them relapse. Two patients developed imatinib withdrawal syndrome, both female on observation arm, one was mild and resolved after 2 months but one was severe and needed termination after 2 months and restarted on imatinib. Two patients in peginterferon arm developed mild hepatitis with liver enzymes <2x of ULN. Four patients were able to tolerate peginterferon-α-2a at the dose of 180 mcg weekly, while one patient needed dose reduction to 90 mcg weekly. Quality of life score comparing two months after stopping TKI and baseline will be presented in the conference later. Conclusion: No conclusive date can be drawn so far because sample size is small and follow-up is short. Nonetheless, this trial provides Malaysian CML a platform to stop TKI safely

    Mindful gratitude journaling: psychological distress, quality of life and suffering in advanced cancer: a randomised controlled trial

    Context Numerous studies have shown that gratitude can reduce stress and improve quality of life. Objective Our study aimed to examine the effect of mindful gratitude journaling on suffering, psychological distress and quality of life of patients with advanced cancer. Methods We conducted a parallel-group, blinded, randomised controlled trial at the University of Malaya Medical Centre, Malaysia. Ninety-two adult patients with advanced cancer, and an overall suffering score ≥4/10 based on the Suffering Pictogram were recruited and randomly assigned to either a mindful gratitude journaling group (N=49) or a routine journaling group (N=43). Results After 1 week, there were significant reductions in the overall suffering score from the baseline in both the intervention group (mean difference in overall suffering score=−2.0, 95% CI=−2.7 to −1.4, t=−6.125, p=0.000) and the control group (mean difference in overall suffering score=−1.6, 95% CI=−2.3 to −0.8, t=−4.106, p=0.037). There were also significant improvements in the total Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale score (mean difference=−3.4, 95% CI=−5.3 to −1.5, t=−3.525, p=0.000) and the total Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Spiritual Well-Being score (mean difference=7.3, 95% CI=1.5 to 13.1, t=2.460, p=0.014) in the intervention group after 7 days, but not in the control group. Conclusion The results provide evidence that 7 days of mindful gratitude journaling could positively affect the state of suffering, psychological distress and quality of life of patients with advanced cancer

    Impact of COVID-19 on cardiovascular testing in the United States versus the rest of the world

    Objectives: This study sought to quantify and compare the decline in volumes of cardiovascular procedures between the United States and non-US institutions during the early phase of the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the care of many non-COVID-19 illnesses. Reductions in diagnostic cardiovascular testing around the world have led to concerns over the implications of reduced testing for cardiovascular disease (CVD) morbidity and mortality. Methods: Data were submitted to the INCAPS-COVID (International Atomic Energy Agency Non-Invasive Cardiology Protocols Study of COVID-19), a multinational registry comprising 909 institutions in 108 countries (including 155 facilities in 40 U.S. states), assessing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on volumes of diagnostic cardiovascular procedures. Data were obtained for April 2020 and compared with volumes of baseline procedures from March 2019. We compared laboratory characteristics, practices, and procedure volumes between U.S. and non-U.S. facilities and between U.S. geographic regions and identified factors associated with volume reduction in the United States. Results: Reductions in the volumes of procedures in the United States were similar to those in non-U.S. facilities (68% vs. 63%, respectively; p = 0.237), although U.S. facilities reported greater reductions in invasive coronary angiography (69% vs. 53%, respectively; p < 0.001). Significantly more U.S. facilities reported increased use of telehealth and patient screening measures than non-U.S. facilities, such as temperature checks, symptom screenings, and COVID-19 testing. Reductions in volumes of procedures differed between U.S. regions, with larger declines observed in the Northeast (76%) and Midwest (74%) than in the South (62%) and West (44%). Prevalence of COVID-19, staff redeployments, outpatient centers, and urban centers were associated with greater reductions in volume in U.S. facilities in a multivariable analysis. Conclusions: We observed marked reductions in U.S. cardiovascular testing in the early phase of the pandemic and significant variability between U.S. regions. The association between reductions of volumes and COVID-19 prevalence in the United States highlighted the need for proactive efforts to maintain access to cardiovascular testing in areas most affected by outbreaks of COVID-19 infection

    Anthocyanidins and anthocyanins: colored pigments as food, pharmaceutical ingredients, and the potential health benefits

    Anthocyanins are colored water-soluble pigments belonging to the phenolic group. The pigments are in glycosylated forms. Anthocyanins responsible for the colors, red, purple, and blue, are in fruits and vegetables. Berries, currants, grapes, and some tropical fruits have high anthocyanins content. Red to purplish blue-colored leafy vegetables, grains, roots, and tubers are the edible vegetables that contain a high level of anthocyanins. Among the anthocyanin pigments, cyanidin-3-glucoside is the major anthocyanin found in most of the plants. The colored anthocyanin pigments have been traditionally used as a natural food colorant. The color and stability of these pigments are influenced by pH, light, temperature, and structure. In acidic condition, anthocyanins appear as red but turn blue when the pH increases. Chromatography has been largely applied in extraction, separation, and quantification of anthocyanins. Besides the use of anthocyanidins and anthocyanins as natural dyes, these colored pigments are potential pharmaceutical ingredients that give various beneficial health effects. Scientific studies, such as cell culture studies, animal models, and human clinical trials, show that anthocyanidins and anthocyanins possess antioxidative and antimicrobial activities, improve visual and neurological health, and protect against various non-communicable diseases. These studies confer the health effects of anthocyanidins and anthocyanins, which are due to their potent antioxidant properties. Different mechanisms and pathways are involved in the protective effects, including free-radical scavenging pathway, cyclooxygenase pathway, mitogen-activated protein kinase pathway, and inflammatory cytokines signaling. Therefore, this review focuses on the role of anthocyanidins and anthocyanins as natural food colorants and their nutraceutical properties for health.     Knockout of Hepatocyte Growth Factor by CRISPR/Cas9 System Induces Apoptosis in Hepatocellular Carcinoma Cells

    Background: CRISPR/Cas9 system is a prokaryotic adaptive immune response system that uses noncoding RNAs to guide the Cas9 nuclease to induce site-specific DNA cleavage. Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) is a well-known growth factor that plays a crucial role in cell growth and organ development. According to recent studies, it has been reported that HGF promoted growth of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells. Here, we investigated the apoptotic effects in HCC cells. Methods: Crispr-HGF plasmid was constructed using GeneArt CRISPR Nuclease Vector. pMex-HGF plasmid that targets HGF overexpressing gene were designed with pMex-neo plasmid. We performed real time-polymerase chain reaction to measure the expression of HGF mRNA. We performed cell counting assay and colony formation assay to evaluate cell proliferation. We also carried out migration assay and invasion assay to reveal the inhibitory effects of Crispr-HGF in HCC cells. Furthermore, we performed cell cycle analysis to detect transfection of Crispr-HGF induced cell cycle arrest. Collectively, we performed annexin V/PI staining assay and Western blot assay. Results: In Crispr-HGF-transfected group, the mRNA expression levels of HGF were markedly downregulated compared to pMex-HGF-transfected group. Moreover, Crispr-HGF inhibited cell viability in HCC cells. We detected that wound area and invaded cells were suppressed in Crispr-HGF-transfected cells. The results showed that transfection of Crispr-HGF induced cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in HCC cells. Expression of the phosphorylation of mitogen activated protein kinases and c-Met protein was regulated in Crispr-HGF-transfected group. Interestingly, we found that the expression of HGF protein in conditioned media significantly decreased in Crispr-HGF-transfected group. Conclusions: Taken together, we found that inhibition of HGF through transfection of Crispr-HGF suppressed cell proliferation and induced apoptotic effects in HCC Huh7 and Hep3B cells

    Subject Site Usability to Student Well-Being and Burnout–Understanding the Pathway

    A considerable amount of research has been conducted to learn about various factors contributing to student well-being and burnout, but there have been few studies that considered both individual and external factors together in understanding these in the context of online and blended learning. A moderated mediation model is used to understand the relationship between usability of E-learning sites with burnout and wellbeing through self control (SC), conscientiousness (C), and self-efficacy (SE) across learning modes- online and blended, among a sample of university students (N = 142). The participants completed an online survey hosted on Qualtrics and completed Conscientious subscales of the Big Five Inventory, Brief Self-Control Scale (B-SCS), General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSE), E-Learning Usability Scale for Higher Education (ELUSH), Satisfaction with life scale (SWLS) and Oldenburg Burnout Inventory (OLBI-student version), which provides scores on two scales, “exhaustion” and “disengagement”. Overall usability of E-learning sites was significantly associated with disengagement but not exhaustion. The mediation effect of self-control on association between site usability and two indicators of burnout (exhaustion and disengagement) was moderated by conscientiousness. No significant differences were observed for burnout and well-being scores across different learning modes. The study highlights the importance of usability of subject sites in preventing burnout thereby increasing learner well-being and has implications for the learning and teaching processes in schools and institutions

    SO2 solubility in low molecular weight polyethylene glycol dimethyl ether and correlation by using cubic equation of state

    The solubility of sulfur dioxide (SO2) was measured in polyethelene glycol dimethyl ether (PEGDME) by use of a static type apparatus in the pressure range from 15.2 to 231.2 kPa at 308.18 K. The stated average molecular weight of PEGDME was Mw = 240 g·mol−1 and the molecular structure of the repeating unit is similar to that of dimethyl ether (DME). The bubble point pressure showed a negative deviation from Raoult law. The behavior was expected from consideration of the vapor–liquid equilibrium data of DME + SO2, reported by Noles and Zollweg (Fluid Phase Equilib 66:275–289, 1991). The ‘bridge-like structure’ will be microscopically formed between the DME unit and SO2, because the two unshared electron pairs of the oxygen atom in DME unit act as an electron donner for some molecules. The Peng–Robinson equation of state was used to correlate the experimental data. Two types of mixing rules were employed. One was a conventional model, and the other was of the excess Gibbs energy type. The latter, Wong–Sandler model combined with Flory–Huggins equation, showed a good reproducibility for the experimental data
