[Review of] Ruthanne Lum McCunn. Sole Survivor
In November, 1942, the British freighter Benlomond was sunk by a German U-boat off the coast of South America with the loss of its entire crew except for a young Chinese steward named Poon Lim. Through his resourcefulness and determination, Lim survived on a wooden raft for 133 days before being picked up by a Brazilian fisherman. Sole Survivor is a fictionalized account of Lim\u27s experience, the longest such ordeal at sea, based largely on interviews with Lim, military and maritime documents, and magazine and newpaper [newspaper] stories

The Author As The Novel Self: Shirley Lim’s Sister Swing
While authorial omniscience is denied the biographer, I argue that Lim as novelist takes this advantage in Sister Swing as a tool through which to explore the development of self-identity through characterizations of three sisters that in combination form the tripartite self as proposed by Freud. Autobiographical memories of familial, social and cultural life experiences are the source from which Lim draws and fleshes out, in her novel, portrayals of family members seeking freedom through different ways and means. As a self-analyst probing deep within the psyche, Lim employs linguistic stylizations to express contrastive and yet complementary points of view in a polyphonic unity of expression that echoes the id, ego and superego in Freud’s topographic model of personality. This psychoanalytic reading of the novel provides an opening through which to explore the deeper meanings within the novel and how the characters are interrelated beyond the level of sisterhood

'cultivated, / Wild, exotic': Nationalism and Internationalism in the Poetry of Shirley Geok-lin Lim
Born in multicultural Malacca during British rule, educated there and later in Kuala Lumpur and Boston, a long-time resident of the USA and a visiting professor to many countries, Shirley Geok-lin Lim seems a transnational writer par excellence. Yet much of her later work involves looking back to Malacca, “at a loss here, / Loosening my grip on yesterday,” afraid of losing “[s]hades of father and mother.” She is the author of poems, short stories, novels and a memoir, as well as literary and social criticism. The memoir, Among the White Moon Faces, is subtitled, “An Asian-American Memoir of Homelands,” and the plural noun is notable. Concentrating on her poetry, this paper charts her shifting sense of identity as Malaccan, Malaysian, American and as a woman of Chinese heritage whose language is English, through “[s]peech which is sufficient enterprise,” even though in these late poems she can feel “unmoored” and sense “the gravity / of the unmade I.

Effect of charging on CdSe/CdS dot-in-rods single-photon emission
The photon statistics of CdSe/CdS dot-in-rods nanocrystals is studied with a
method involving post-selection of the photon detection events based on the
photoluminescence count rate. We show that flickering between two states needs
to be taken into account to interpret the single-photon emission properties.
With post-selection we are able to identify two emitting states: the exciton
and the charged exciton (trion), characterized by different lifetimes and
different second order correlation functions. Measurements of the second order
autocorrelation function at zero delay with post- selection shows a degradation
of the single photon emission for CdSe/CdS dot-in-rods in a charged state that
we explain by deriving the neutral and charged biexciton quantum yields.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
