Acoustic tweets and blogs: Using social media in an undergraduate acoustics course

    Get PDF
Each fall, the author teaches an undergraduate architectural acoustics course to around 40 third-year architectural engineering students at the University of Nebraska. Beginning in 2011, a social media component was introduced to explore the use of this technology and how it may supplement the students\u27 learning experience. Students were given an opportunity to receive extra credit by using Twitter and/or blogging about course material using a set hashtag (#AE3300) or through the course website. Results were positive, and the author will discuss pros and cons that she has experienced in adding this social media component. Suggestions for future implementations and examples of student participation will be presented

Mocking Equality: Reproduction of Gender Hierarchy In Collegiate Mock Trial

During the information sessions that the Scripps Mock Trial Team hosts at the beginning of the school year for those interested in mock trial, it\u27s customary for all the returning team members to talk about why we decided to join mock trial in college. We had no team at my high school, but at the end of my senior year, my AP American Government teacher decided that having a mock trial in class would give us valuable insight into the American legal system. I was chosen to give the closing statement for the defense, and I found my calling. My competitive spirit had found an outlet where it was not hampered by the unathletic body that housed it: competitive arguing. I have not been able to find any scholarly text that examines the ways in which mock trial teams themselves adhere to gender-normative patterns. I believe that this thesiswill be invaluable to an understanding of how gender roles are performed in the legal professio

This study aimed to examine the influence of the financial accounting system and accessibility of financial statements on the accountability in financial management. This study was conducted at SKPD of Payakumbuh city. The population in this study were employed who worked in the SKPD Payakumbuh city (25 government agencies). The sampling method used in this study is purposive sampling method. The respondent in this study is the head of SKPD, the head of financial, treasurer of SKPD and financial staff is a side direct related in the financial management area on government of Payakumbuh city. The sample used in this study were 100 respondents. The hypotheses then tested is multiple linear regression analysis by using SPSS version 20.0.The result of this study indicated that the financial accounting system and accessibility of financial statements influence on the accountability in financial management area. The magnitude of the effect (R2) financial accounting system, accessibility of financial statements on the accountability in financial management area was 31,9%. While the remaining 68,1% is influenced by other independent variabel that are not observed in this study. Keywords : Accountability, financial, management, accounting, and accessibilit

Mass freezing in growing neutrino quintessence

Growing neutrino quintessence solves the coincidence problem for dark energy by a growing cosmological value of the neutrino mass which emerges from a cosmon-neutrino interaction stronger than gravity. The cosmon-mediated attraction between neutrinos induces the formation of large scale neutrino lumps in a recent cosmological epoch. We argue that the non-linearities in the cosmon field equations stop the further increase of the neutrino mass within sufficiently dense and large lumps. As a result, we find the neutrino induced gravitational potential to be substantially reduced when compared to linear extrapolations. We furthermore demonstrate that inside a lump the possible time variation of fundamental constants is much smaller than their cosmological evolution. This feature may reconcile current geophysical bounds with claimed cosmological variations of the fine structure constant.Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures. Version published in PR

Progression of carotid-artery disease in type 2 diabetic patients: A cohort prospective study

    Get PDF
In order to assess the progression of carotid-artery disease in type 2 diabetic cohort (n=207 patients), the dynamic change in carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) and the occurrence of plaques were followed for a period of 31.35±10.59 months. The mean CIMT at the beginning of the study was 0.9178±0.1447 mm, with a maximal value of 1.1210±0.2366 mm. The maximal value of CIMT changed by 0.07 mm/year. Progression of CIMT was noted in 86.8% and its regression in 7.8% of patients. The occurrence of carotid plaques was detected in 41.8% of patients. Multiple regression analysis revealed the maximal value of CIMT to be associated with diastolic blood pressure, despite mean CIMT being predicted by body mass index. The presence of peripheral arterial disease and hypo-high-density lipoproteinemia were found to be predictors for the occurrence of carotid plaques. Our data have clinical implications in predicting risk factors for the progression of carotid-artery disease in type 2 diabetic patients for their appropriate management
