Comment on ``Evidence for Anisotropic State of Two-Dimensional Electrons in High Landau Levels''
In a recent letter M. Lilly et al [PRL 82, 394 (1999)] have shown that a
highly anisotropic state can arise in certain two dimensional electron systems.
In the large square samples studied, resistances measured in the two
perpendicular directions are found to have a ratio that may be 60 or larger at
low temperature and at certain magnetic fields. In Hall bar measurements, the
anisotropy ratio is found to be much smaller (roughly 5). In this comment we
resolve this discrepancy by noting that the anisotropy of the underlying sheet
resistivities is correctly represented by Hall bar resistance measurements but
shows up exponentially enhanced in resistance measurements on square samples
due to simple geometric effects. We note, however, that the origin of this
underlying resistivity anisotropy remains unknown, and is not addressed here.Comment: 1 page, minor calculational error repaire

Photo-z Performance for Precision Cosmology II : Empirical Verification
The success of future large scale weak lensing surveys will critically depend
on the accurate estimation of photometric redshifts of very large samples of
galaxies. This in turn depends on both the quality of the photometric data and
the photo-z estimators. In a previous study, (Bordoloi et al. 2010) we focussed
primarily on the impact of photometric quality on photo-z estimates and on the
development of novel techniques to construct the N(z) of tomographic bins at
the high level of precision required for precision cosmology, as well as the
correction of issues such as imprecise corrections for Galactic reddening. We
used the same set of templates to generate the simulated photometry as were
then used in the photo-z code, thereby removing any effects of "template
error". In this work we now include the effects of "template error" by
generating simulated photometric data set from actual COSMOS photometry. We use
the trick of simulating redder photometry of galaxies at higher redshifts by
using a bluer set of passbands on low z galaxies with known redshifts. We find
that "template error" is a rather small factor in photo-z performance, at the
photometric precision and filter complement expected for all-sky surveys. With
only a small sub-set of training galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts, it is
in principle possible to construct tomographic redshift bins whose mean
redshift is known, from photo-z alone, to the required accuracy of 0.002(1+z).Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
Undoped Electron-Hole Bilayers in a GaAs/AlGaAs Double Quantum Well
We present the fabrication details of completely undoped electron-hole
bilayer devices in a GaAs/AlGaAs double quantum well heterostructure with a 30
nm barrier. These devices have independently tunable densities of the
two-dimensional electron gas and two-dimensional hole gas. We report
four-terminal transport measurements of the independently contacted electron
and hole layers with balanced densities from cm down
to cm at . The mobilities can exceed cm V s for electrons and

Right trisegmentectomy for hepatic neoplasms
Thirty patients had right trisegmentectomy for 19 primary hepatic malignant tumors, 7 localized liver metastases and four benign lesions. A technical refinement that aided resection of bulky posterior and superior tumors was intrahepatic identification and control of the right hepatic vein. The operative mortality was 3.3%. Late hepatic insufficiency was not observed. More than one-half of the patients operated upon a year or more ago for primary hepatic malignant growths had a tumor-free state at the 12 month follow-up period. Beyond this time, there was only one recurrence. The results in children were twice as good as in adults. The results in treating localized liver metastases from distant primary sites were inferior to those in treating primary hepatic tumors. A hypothetical case was made for combining hepatic resection with adjuvant chemotherapy, even though our experience could not be construed as direct support for this practice
Piezoelectric mechanism of orientation of stripe structures in two-dimensional electron systems
A piezoelectric mechanism of orientation of stripes in two-dimensional
quantum Hall systems in GaAs heterostructures is considered. The anisotropy of
the elastic moduli and the boundary of the sample are taken into account. It is
found that in the average the stripes line up with the [110] axis. In double
layer systems the wave vector of the stripe structure rotates from the [110] to
[100] axis if the period of density modulation becomes large than the
interlayer distance. From the experimental point of view it means that in
double layer systems anisotropic part of resistivity changes its sign under
variation of the external magnetic field.Comment: 8 page
