The ASL-CDI 2.0: an updated, normed adaptation of the MacArthur Bates Communicative Development Inventory for American Sign Language
Vocabulary is a critical early marker of language development. The MacArthur Bates Communicative Development Inventory has been adapted to dozens of languages, and provides a bird’s-eye view of children’s early vocabularies which can be informative for both research and clinical purposes. We present an update to the American Sign Language Communicative Development Inventory (the ASL-CDI 2.0, https://www.aslcdi.org), a normed assessment of early ASL vocabulary that can be widely administered online by individuals with no formal training in sign language linguistics. The ASL-CDI 2.0 includes receptive and expressive vocabulary, and a Gestures and Phrases section; it also introduces an online interface that presents ASL signs as videos. We validated the ASL-CDI 2.0 with expressive and receptive in-person tasks administered to a subset of participants. The norming sample presented here consists of 120 deaf children (ages 9 to 73 months) with deaf parents. We present an analysis of the measurement properties of the ASL-CDI 2.0. Vocabulary increases with age, as expected. We see an early noun bias that shifts with age, and a lag between receptive and expressive vocabulary. Collaborative semantic web browsing with Magpie
Web browsing is often a collaborative activity. Users involved in a joint information gathering exercise will wish to share knowledge about the web pages visited and the contents found. Magpie is a suite of tools supporting the interpretation of web pages and semantically enriched web browsing. By automatically associating an ontology-based semantic layer to web resources, Magpie allows relevant services to be invoked as well as remotely triggered within a standard web browser. In this paper we describe how Magpie trigger services can provide semantic support to collaborative browsing activities

Characterization of gravity current formation for the use in detonation refraction experiments
Detonation propagation through an interface is being studied at Caltech. In these
experiments, the interface shape is determined by the gravity currents. This report
presents an experimental study of the formation and the development of these
gravity currents by an analog system in a water channel using water and salt water to
simulate the density differences in detonation experiments. The major parameters
such as the Reynolds number and the density difference were matched in both
experiments to be able to compare the gravity current in the water channel and the
gravity current in the Galcit detonation tube. In the present study, the gravity current
was generated by the removal of a plate, and was visualized by adding food dye. The
results confirm previous studies; Keulegan demonstrated in 1957 that the velocity of
the gravity current is a function of the square root of the density difference. The
interface is affect by the retracting of the plate which creates the wake effects. The
Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities on the upstream side of the gravity current create the
visualized mixing zones. Finally, this study revealed how the gravity current interface
into the Galcit detonation tube should develop and where the mixing zones should
occur
Instability of ion kinetic waves in a weakly ionized plasma
The fundamental higher-order Landau plasma modes are known to be generally
heavily damped. We show that these modes for the ion component in a weakly
ionized plasma can be substantially modified by ion-neutral collisions and a dc
electric field driving ion flow so that some of them can become unstable. This
instability is expected to naturally occur in presheaths of gas discharges at
sufficiently small pressures and thus affect sheaths and discharge structures.Comment: Published in Phys. Rev. E, see

Riddled-like Basin in Two-Dimensional Map for Bouncing Motion of an Inelastic Particle on a Vibrating Board
Motivated by bouncing motion of an inelastic particle on a vibrating board, a
simple two-dimensional map is constructed and its behavior is studied
numerically. In addition to the typical route to chaos through a periodic
doubling bifurcation, we found peculiar behavior in the parameter region where
two stable periodic attractors coexist. A typical orbit in the region goes
through chaotic motion for an extended transient period before it converges
into one of the two periodic attractors. The basin structure in this parameter
region is almost riddling and the fractal dimension of the basin boundary is

Increased incidence of thyroid cancer among world trade center first responders: A descriptive epidemiological assessment

An increased incidence of thyroid cancer among 9/11 rescue workers has been reported, the etiology of which remains unclear but which may, at least partly, be the result of the increased medical surveillance this group undergoes. This study aimed to investigate thyroid cancer in World Trade Center (WTC) responders by looking at the demographic data and questionnaire responses of thyroid cancer cases from the Mount Sinai WTC Health Program (WTCHP). WTCHP thyroid cancer tumors were of a similar size (p = 0.4), and were diagnosed at a similar age (p = 0.2) compared to a subset of thyroid cancer cases treated at Mount Sinai without WTC exposure. These results do not support the surveillance bias hypothesis, under which smaller tumors are expected to be diagnosed at earlier ages. WTCHP thyroid cancer cases also reported a past history of radiation exposure and a family history of thyroid conditions at lower rates than expected, with higher than expected rates of previous cancer diagnoses, family histories of other cancers, and high Body Mass Indexes (BMIs). Further research is needed to better understand the underlying risk factors that may play a role in the development of thyroid cancer in this group
