    Learning on a Budget via Teacher Imitation

    Deep Reinforcement Learning (RL) techniques can benefit greatly from leveraging prior experience, which can be either self-generated or acquired from other entities. Action advising is a framework that provides a flexible way to transfer such knowledge in the form of actions between teacher-student peers. However, due to the realistic concerns, the number of these interactions is limited with a budget; therefore, it is crucial to perform these in the most appropriate moments. There have been several promising studies recently that address this problem setting especially from the student's perspective. Despite their success, they have some shortcomings when it comes to the practical applicability and integrity as an overall solution to the learning from advice challenge. In this paper, we extend the idea of advice reusing via teacher imitation to construct a unified approach that addresses both advice collection and advice utilisation problems. We also propose a method to automatically tune the relevant hyperparameters of these components on-the-fly to make it able to adapt to any task with minimal human intervention. The experiments we performed in 5 different Atari games verify that our algorithm either surpasses or performs on-par with its top competitors while being far simpler to be employed. Furthermore, its individual components are also found to be providing significant advantages alone

    Molecular epidemiology of Salmonella Typhimurium and Salmonella 4,5,12:i:- isolated from pig farms in Spain

    The genetic diversity of 194 salmonella isolates belonging to different phagetypes of S. Typhimurium and S 4,5, 12:i- isolated from both healthy slaughter (157) and diarrhoea-affected (37) pigs was assessed using molecular typing (plasmid profiling and PFGE). The aim of this study was to elucidate the sources of infection, and to follow the spread of specific clones within the infected farms. In spite of the genetic diversity observed amongst the isolates, some clones were more prevalent and widely distributed in the pig population, being detected in several slaughter batches from the same and different farms. This finding suggests the existence of multiple and recurrent infection sources, as well as mechanisms favouring survival, persistence and spreading of certam clones within and between pig farms

    A 400 sow farrow-to-finish farm was sampled for 6 consecutive years to determine the persistence of Salmonella Typhimurium (STM) DT104. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, plasmid DNA analysis and antibiotic resistance phenotyping was carried out on selected STM strains, isolated from the farm during the time of the study. Clonal persistence as well and introduction of new clones from external sources were proven to be the main mechanisms by which salmonella infection was maintained in the farm

    Food-borne diseases associated with frozen berries consumption: A historical perspective, European Union, 1983 to 2013

    Epidemiological investigations of outbreaks of hepatitis A virus (HAV) and norovirus (NoV) infections in the European Union/European Economic Area (EU/EEA) in the last five years have highlighted frozen berries as a vehicle of infection. Given the increasing berry consumption in the EU over the last decades, we undertook a review of the existing evidence to assess the potential scale of threat associated with this product. We searched the literature and four restricted-access online platforms for outbreak/contamination events associated with consumption of frozen berries. We performed an evaluation of the sources to identify areas for improvement. The review revealed 32 independent events (i.e. outbreak, food contamination) in the period 1983–2013, of which 26 were reported after 2004. The identified pathogens were NoV, HAV and Shigella sonnei. NoV was the most common and implicated in 27 events with over 15,000 cases reported. A capture–recapture analysis was performed including three overlapping sources for the period 2005–2013. The study estimated that the event-ascertainment was 62%. Consumption of frozen berries is associated with increasing reports of NoV and HAV outbreaks and contamination events, particularly after 2003. A review of the risks associated with this product is required to inform future prevention strategies. Better integration of the available communication platforms and databases should be sought at EU/EEA level to improve monitoring, prevention and control of food-bornerelated events

    Porcine associated Salmonella Typhimuirum DT120: use of PFGE and MLVA in a putative outbreak investigation

    In November 2006 a cluster of Salmonella Typhimurium DT120 in the North East of England was putatively associated with the consumption of pork. At the same time cases of illness in Denmark were associated with this Salmonella type, and a EU alert was issued to determine the type of S. Typhimurium DT120 identified. Isolates from the UK and Denmark were compared on the basis of antibiogram, Pulsed Field Gel Electrophoresis (PFGE) and Multi-Locus-Variable number andem repeat Analysis (MLVA or VNTR) to identify the S. Typhimurium DT120 type and results were compared electronically. Isolates from England had the resistance profile ApSSuT (ampicillin, streptomycin, sulfamethoxazole and tetracycline), VNTR profile (171-244-316-0-487) and with the distinct PFGE type (STYMXB.0083). Isolates from Denmark were resistant to Ap (ampicillin) only, had the VNTR type (171-270-324-0-490) and a PFGE type distinct from England (STYMXB.0010). It was therefore possible to confirm that the isolates from England and Denmark were not identical. These results have verified the significance of VNTR in outbreak investigations for S. Typhimurium and have demonstrated how new molecular strategies may be used to supplement existing methods such as PFGE to enable the accurate and rapid comparison of isolates from different countries

    Risk ranking of pathogens in ready-to-eat unprocessed foods of non-animal origin (FoNAO) in the EU: Initial evaluation using outbreak data (2007-2011).

    International audienceFoods of non-animal origin (FoNAO) are consumed in a variety of forms, being a major component of almost all meals. These food types have the potential to be associated with large outbreaks as seen in 2011 associated with VTEC 0104. In order to identify and rank specific food/pathogen combinations most often linked to human cases originating from FoNAO in the EU, a semi-quantitative model was developed using seven criteria: strength of associations between food and pathogen based on the foodborne outbreak data from EU Zoonoses Monitoring (2007-2011), incidence of illness, burden of disease, dose-response relationship, consumption, prevalence of contamination and pathogen growth potential during shelf life. The top ranking food/pathogen combination was Salmonella spp. and leafy greens eaten raw followed by (in equal rank) Salmonella spp. and bulb and stem vegetables, Salmonella spp. and tomatoes, Salmonella spp. and melons, and pathogenic Escherichia coli and fresh pods, legumes or grains. Despite the inherent assumptions and limitations, this risk model is considered a tool for risk managers, as it allows ranking of food/pathogen combinations most often linked to foodborne human cases originating from FoNAO in the EU. Efforts to collect additional data even in the absence of reported outbreaks as well as to enhance the quality of the EU-specific data, which was used as input for all the model criteria, will allow the improvement of the model outputs. Furthermore, it is recommended that harmonised terminology be applied to the categorisation of foods collected for different reasons, e.g. monitoring, surveillance, outbreak investigation and consumption. In addition, to assist future microbiological risk assessments, consideration should be given to the collection of additional information on how food has been processed, stored and prepared as part of the above data collection exercises

    Maximum levels of cross-contamination for 24 antimicrobial active substances in non-target feed. Part 1: Methodology, general data gaps and uncertainties

    The European Commission requested EFSA to assess, in collaboration with EMA, the specific concentrations of antimicrobials resulting from cross-contamination in non-target feed for food-producing animals below which there would not be an effect on the emergence of, and/or selection for, resistance in microbial agents relevant for human and animal health, as well as the levels of the antimicrobials which could have a growth promotion/increase yield effect. The assessment was performed for 24 antimicrobial active substances, as specified in the mandate. This scientific opinion describes the methodology used, and the main associated data gaps and uncertainties. To estimate the antimicrobial levels in the non-target feed that would not result in emergence of, and/or selection for, resistance, a model was developed. This ‘Feed Antimicrobial Resistance Selection Concentration’ (FARSC) model is based on the minimal selective concentration (MSC), or the predicted MSC (PMSC) if MSC for the most susceptible bacterial species is unavailable, the fraction of antimicrobial dose available for exposure to microorganisms in the large intestine or rumen (considering pharmacokinetic parameters), the daily faecal output or rumen volume and the daily feed intake. Currently, lack of data prevents the establishment of PMSC and/or FARSC for several antimicrobials and animal species. To address growth promotion, data from an extensive literature search were used. Specific assessments of the different substances grouped by antimicrobial classes are addressed in separate scientific opinions. General conclusions and recommendations were made
