In this article the authors seek to make the case that qualitative data analysis can be explained within the framework of critical thinking and incorporates within this framework the role of technology – specifically NVivo. First they discuss critical thinking from the perspectives of Bloom, Adler, and Polanyi. They then link critical thinking to the concept of a general inductive approach to qualitative analysis as described by Thomas. Finally, they illustrate connections of both critical thinking and the general inductive approach to technology using NVivo screenshots

This presentation will be done as a dramatization. Marilyn Lichtman and Jim Bernauer will portray IRB members while Valery Keibler will portray a graduate student presenting her case to the IRB Committee. We intend to incorporate struggle, sadness, and humor as we portray the misunderstandings that sometimes exist among IRB members who have been trained under a traditionalist research approach. In dem Buch werden im wesentlichen die Beiträge zusammengestellt, die für den nun dritten Workshop zu qualitativer Psychologie, erstmalig nicht in Deutschland veranstaltet, verfasst wurden. Allerdings wird dem Thema des Bandes – nämlich Forschungsfragen und Analyseverfahren aufeinander abzustimmen – nur sehr allgemein Genüge getan. Bei einem Großteil der Beiträge geht es darum, einen Literaturauszug (aus Don Quixote) verschiedenen Arten qualitativer Analyse zu unterziehen. Obwohl die vorgestellten Ansätze teilweise interessant sind, bin ich nicht sicher, ob der hier gewählte Literaturauszug wirklich hilft, die auf qualitative Datenanalyse bezogenen Fragen zu verdeutlichen. Allerdings ergeben sich aus dem Vergleich der Wege, die in den individuellen Beiträgen beschritten werden, um Cervantes Sinn zu verleihen, einige interessante Einsichten für Lesende. Die übrigen Beiträge behandeln sehr unterschiedliche Fragen und Methodenanwendungen. Obwohl ich einige sehr reizvoll fand, konnten insgesamt nur begrenzt neue Ideen vermittelt werden.
