    Association between Self-Reported Survey Measures and Biomarkers of Second-Hand Tobacco Smoke Exposure in Non-Smoking Pregnant Women

    Second-hand tobacco smoke (SHS) causes adverse health outcomes in adults. Further studies are needed to evaluate psychosocial SHS exposure measures in comparison to SHS exposure biomarkers, particularly in pregnant women. This study aimed to compare self-reported SHS exposure to urinary cotinine levels in pregnant women. A cross-sectional correlation design was conducted using a convenience sample of 70 non-smoking pregnant women. Measures included self-reported questionnaires and laboratory confirmation of cotinine levels in the urinary samples. Multiple regression analysis was used to assess the correlation after controlling for potential confounding variables. The average level of urinary cotinine among non-smoking pregnant women was 6.77 ng/mL. Medium-strength correlations were found among psychosocial SHS exposure measures and urine cotinine levels. Questions regarding ‘instances of smoking in front of the individual’ and ‘subjective perceived frequency of SHS exposure in past 7 days’ are feasible items for pregnant women in clinics (particularly the first question). Hence, we suggest that these simple questions should be used to assist pregnant women in reducing the harm associated with SHS exposure

    Analgesic and Anti-Inflammatory Activities of Methanol Extract of Ficus pumila L. in Mice

    This study investigated possible analgesic and anti-inflammatory mechanisms of the methanol extract of Ficus pumila (FPMeOH). Analgesic effects were evaluated in two models including acetic acid-induced writhing response and formalin-induced paw licking. The results showed FPMeOH decreased writhing response in the acetic acid assay and licking time in the formalin test. The anti-inflammatory effect was evaluated by λ-carrageenan-induced mouse paw edema and histopathological analyses. FPMeOH significantly decreased the volume of paw edema induced by λ-carrageenan. Histopathologically, FPMeOH abated the level of tissue destruction and swelling of the edema paws. This study indicated anti-inflammatory mechanism of FPMeOH may be due to declined levels of NO and MDA in the edema paw through increasing the activities of SOD, GPx, and GRd in the liver. Additionally, FPMeOH also decreased the level of inflammatory mediators such as IL-1β, TNF-α, and COX-2. HPLC fingerprint was established and the contents of three active ingredients, rutin, luteolin, and apigenin, were quantitatively determined.     Estimating the Economic Impact of Climate Change on Cardiovascular Diseases—Evidence from Taiwan

    The main purpose of this study was to investigate how climate change affects blood vessel-related heart disease and hypertension and to estimate the associated economic damage. In this paper, both the panel data model and the contingent valuation method (CVM) approaches are applied. The empirical results indicate that the number of death from cardiovascular diseases would be increased by 0.226% as the variation in temperature increases by 1%. More importantly, the number of death from cardiovascular diseases would be increased by 1.2% to 4.1% under alternative IPCC climate change scenarios. The results from the CVM approach show that each person would be willing to pay US51toUS51 to US97 per year in order to avoid the increase in the mortality rate of cardiovascular diseases caused by climate change

    Discutindo a educação ambiental no cotidiano escolar: desenvolvimento de projetos na escola formação inicial e continuada de professores

    A presente pesquisa buscou discutir como a Educação Ambiental (EA) vem sendo trabalhada, no Ensino Fundamental e como os docentes desta escola compreendem e vem inserindo a EA no cotidiano escolar., em uma escola estadual do município de Tangará da Serra/MT, Brasil. Para tanto, realizou-se entrevistas com os professores que fazem parte de um projeto interdisciplinar de EA na escola pesquisada. Verificou-se que o projeto da escola não vem conseguindo alcançar os objetivos propostos por: desconhecimento do mesmo, pelos professores; formação deficiente dos professores, não entendimento da EA como processo de ensino-aprendizagem, falta de recursos didáticos, planejamento inadequado das atividades. A partir dessa constatação, procurou-se debater a impossibilidade de tratar do tema fora do trabalho interdisciplinar, bem como, e principalmente, a importância de um estudo mais aprofundado de EA, vinculando teoria e prática, tanto na formação docente, como em projetos escolares, a fim de fugir do tradicional vínculo “EA e ecologia, lixo e horta”.Facultad de Humanidades y Ciencias de la Educació

    iStable 2.0: Predicting protein thermal stability changes by integrating various characteristic modules

    Protein mutations can lead to structural changes that affect protein function and result in disease occurrence. In protein engineering, drug design or and optimization industries, mutations are often used to improve protein stability or to change protein properties while maintaining stability. To provide possible candidates for novel protein design, several computational tools for predicting protein stability changes have been developed. Although many prediction tools are available, each tool employs different algorithms and features. This can produce conflicting prediction results that make it difficult for users to decide upon the correct protein design. Therefore, this study proposes an integrated prediction tool, iStable 2.0, which integrates 11 sequence-based and structure-based prediction tools by machine learning and adds protein sequence information as features. Three coding modules are designed for the system, an Online Server Module, a Stand-alone Module and a Sequence Coding Module, to improve the prediction performance of the previous version of the system. The final integrated structure-based classification model has a higher Matthews correlation coefficient than that of the single prediction tool (0.708 vs 0.547, respectively), and the Pearson correlation coefficient of the regression model likewise improves from 0.669 to 0.714. The sequence-based model not only successfully integrates off-the-shelf predictors but also improves the Matthews correlation coefficient of the best single prediction tool by at least 0.161, which is better than the individual structure-based prediction tools. In addition, both the Sequence Coding Module and the Stand-alone Module maintain performance with only a 5% decrease of the Matthews correlation coefficient when the integrated online tools are unavailable. iStable 2.0 is available at http://ncblab.nchu.edu.tw/iStable2
