    Study on the effects of the light CP-odd Higgs via the leptonic decays of pseudoscalar mesons

    To explain the anomalously large decay rate of ÎŁ+→p+ÎŒ+Ό−\Sigma^+\to p+\mu^+\mu^-, it was proposed that a new mechanism where a light CP-odd pseudoscalar boson of mA10=214.3m_{A_1^0}=214.3 MeV makes a crucial contribution. Later, some authors have studied the transition π0→e+e−\pi^0\to e^+e^- and ΄→γA10\Upsilon\to \gamma A_1^0 in terms of the same mechanism and their result indicates that with the suggested mass one cannot fit the data. This discrepancy might be caused by experimental error of ÎŁ+→p+ÎŒ+Ό−\Sigma^+\to p+\mu^+\mu^- because there were only a few events. Whether the mechanism is a reasonable one motivates us to investigate the transitions π0→e+e−;η(ηâ€Č)→Ό+Ό−;ηc→Ό+Ό−;ηb→τ+τ−\pi^0\to e^+e^-; \eta (\eta^\prime)\to \mu^+\mu^-; \eta_c\to \mu^+\mu^-; \eta_b\to\tau^+\tau^- within the same framework. It is noted that for π0→e+e−\pi^0\to e^+e^-, the standard model (SM) prediction is smaller than the data, whereas the experimental central value of η→Ό+Ό−\eta \to \mu^+\mu^- is also above the SM prediction. It means that there should be extra contributions from other mechanisms and the contribution of A10A_1^0 may be a possible one. Theoretically calculating the branching ratios of the concerned modes, we would check if we can obtain a universal mass for A10A_1^0 which reconcile the theoretical predictions and data for all the modes. Unfortunately, we find that it is impossible to have such a mass with the same coupling ∣gℓ∣|g_\ell|. Therefore we conclude that the phenomenology does not favor such a light A10A_1^0, even though a small window is still open.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, 2 table

    The relative efficacy of different strain combinations of lactic acid bacteria in the reduction of populations of Salmonella enterica Typhimurium in the livers and spleens of mice

    Multispecies probiotics have been reported to be more effective than monostrain probiotics in health promoting for the host. In this study, 12 lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains were selected based on the level of induction of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha in RAW 264.7 macrophage cells. Their adherence to Caco-2 cells and inhibitory effects on Salmonella invasion of Caco-2 cells were compared. Strains with different probiotic properties were then combined and BALB/c mice were fed with LAB strains for 63 days; then the mice were challenged with Salmonella on day 64. For Salmonella-unchallenged mice that received a multistrain combination of LAB strains that have greater TNF-alpha production in macrophages, greater adherence and inhibit Salmonella invasion of Caco-2 cells to a greater extent, their peritoneal macrophages had greater phagocytic activity. For Salmonella-challenged mice, a significant reduction of Salmonella cells in the livers and spleens of the mice was observed 8 days post challenge. The addition of 12% skim milk powder together with LAB strain combinations significantly enhanced the reduction of Salmonella cells in the mice livers and spleens. In conclusion, we have shown that LAB strain combinations with particular probiotic properties when fed to mice can inhibit Salmonella invasion of the liver and spleen

    Does accelerating universe indicates Brans-Dicke theory

    The evolution of universe in Brans-Dicke (BD) theory is discussed in this paper. Considering a parameterized scenario for BD scalar field ϕ=ϕ0aα\phi=\phi_{0}a^{\alpha} which plays the role of gravitational "constant" GG, we apply the Markov Chain Monte Carlo method to investigate a global constraints on BD theory with a self-interacting potential according to the current observational data: Union2 dataset of type supernovae Ia (SNIa), high-redshift Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) data, observational Hubble data (OHD), the cluster X-ray gas mass fraction, the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO), and the cosmic microwave background (CMB) data. It is shown that an expanded universe from deceleration to acceleration is given in this theory, and the constraint results of dimensionless matter density Ω0m\Omega_{0m} and parameter α\alpha are, Ω0m=0.286−0.039−0.047+0.037+0.050\Omega_{0m}=0.286^{+0.037+0.050}_{-0.039-0.047} and α=0.0046−0.0171−0.0206+0.0149+0.0171\alpha=0.0046^{+0.0149+0.0171}_{-0.0171-0.0206} which is consistent with the result of current experiment exploration, âˆŁÎ±âˆŁâ‰€0.132124\mid\alpha\mid \leq 0.132124. In addition, we use the geometrical diagnostic method, jerk parameter jj, to distinguish the BD theory and cosmological constant model in Einstein's theory of general relativity.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figure

    Fabrication of CuO nanoparticle interlinked microsphere cages by solution method

    Here we report a very simple method to convert conventional CuO powders to nanoparticle interlinked microsphere cages by solution method. CuO is dissolved into aqueous ammonia, and the solution is diluted by alcohol and dip coating onto a glass substrate. Drying at 80 °C, the nanostructures with bunchy nanoparticles of Cu(OH)2can be formed. After the substrate immerges into the solution and we vaporize the solution, hollow microspheres can be formed onto the substrate. There are three phases in the as-prepared samples, monoclinic tenorite CuO, orthorhombic Cu(OH)2, and monoclinic carbonatodiamminecopper(II) (Cu(NH3)2CO3). After annealing at 150 °C, the products convert to CuO completely. At annealing temperature above 350 °C, the hollow microspheres became nanoparticle interlinked cages

    Objective comparison of particle tracking methods

    Particle tracking is of key importance for quantitative analysis of intracellular dynamic processes from time-lapse microscopy image data. Because manually detecting and following large numbers of individual particles is not feasible, automated computational methods have been developed for these tasks by many groups. Aiming to perform an objective comparison of methods, we gathered the community and organized an open competition in which participating teams applied their own methods independently to a commonly defined data set including diverse scenarios. Performance was assessed using commonly defined measures. Although no single method performed best across all scenarios, the results revealed clear differences between the various approaches, leading to notable practical conclusions for users and developers
