Geometric effect on near-field heat transfer analysis using efficient graphene and nanotube models

Following the recent research enthusiasm on the effect of geometry on near-field heat transfer (NFHT) enhancement, we present an analysis based on simplified yet highly efficient graphene and nanotube models. Two geometries are considered: that of two parallel infinite "graphene" surfaces and that of a one-dimensional infinite "nanotube" line in parallel with an infinite surface. Due to its symmetry, the former is in principal simpler to analyze and even so, earlier works suggested that the application of a full model in this problem still demands heavy computations. Among other findings, our simplified computation - having successfully replicated the results of relevant earlier works - suggests a sharper NFHT enhancement dependence on distance for the line-surface system, namely Jd5.1J\sim d^{-5.1} as compared to Jd2.2J\sim d^{-2.2} for the parallel surface. Such comparisons together with applications of our efficient approach would be the important first steps in the attempt to find a general rule describing geometric dependence of NFHT.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figure

The Higgs boson inclusive decay channels HbbˉH \to b\bar{b} and HggH \to gg up to four-loop level

The principle of maximum conformality (PMC) has been suggested to eliminate the renormalization scheme and renormalization scale uncertainties, which are unavoidable for the conventional scale setting and are usually important errors for theoretical estimations. In this paper, by applying PMC scale setting, we analyze two important inclusive Standard Model Higgs decay channels, HbbˉH\rightarrow b\bar{b} and HggH\rightarrow gg, up to four-loop and three-loop levels accordingly. After PMC scale setting, it is found that the conventional scale uncertainty for these two channels can be eliminated to a high degree. There is small residual initial scale dependence for the Higgs decay widths due to unknown higher-order {βi}\{\beta_i\}-terms. Up to four-loop level, we obtain Γ(Hbbˉ)=2.389±0.073±0.041\Gamma(H\rightarrow b\bar{b}) = 2.389\pm0.073 \pm0.041 MeV and up to three-loop level, we obtain Γ(Hgg)=0.373±0.030\Gamma(H\rightarrow gg) = 0.373\pm0.030 MeV, where the first error is caused by varying MH=126±4M_H=126\pm4 GeV and the second error for HbbˉH\to b\bar{b} is caused by varying the MS\overline{\rm MS}-running mass mb(mb)=4.18±0.03m_b(m_b)=4.18\pm0.03 GeV. Taking HbbˉH\to b\bar{b} as an example, we present a comparison of three BLM-based scale setting approaches, e.g. the PMC-I approach based on the PMC-BLM correspondence, the RδR_\delta-scheme and the seBLM approach, all of which are designed to provide effective ways to identify non-conformal {βi}\{\beta_i\}-series at each perturbative order. At four-loop level, all those approaches lead to good pQCD convergence, they have almost the same pQCD series, and their predictions are almost independent on the initial renormalization scale. In this sense, those approaches are equivalent to each other.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures. References updated and discussions improved. To be published in Eur.Phys.J.

Enhanced acupuncture therapy for radiotherapy-related neuropathic pain in patients with gynecologic cancer: a report of two cases and brief review

As radiation therapy is increasingly utilized in the treatment of cancer, neuropathic pain (NP) is a common radiotherapy-related adverse effect and has a significant impact on clinical outcomes negatively. However, despite an improved understanding of neuropathic pain management, pain is often undertreated in patients with cancer. Herein, we reported two cases with radiotherapy-related neuropathic pain (RRNP) who presented a positive reaction to acupuncture. Patient 1 (a 73-year-old woman) with gynecologic cancer complained of burning and electric shock-like pain in the lower limb after radiotherapy. With the accepted combination of acupuncture and drugs, the pain was alleviated completely in 8 weeks. Patient 2 (a 64-year-old woman) accepted acupuncture in the absence of medication because of her inability to tolerate the adverse events of anticonvulsant drugs. She achieved remission of pain 4 weeks later. The results of this study showed that acupuncture might be promising for controlling the RRNP in patients with cancer, especially who were intolerant or unresponsive to medications

Impact of diurnal temperature fluctuations on larval settlement and growth of the reef coral Pocillopora damicornis

Diurnal fluctuations in seawater temperature are ubiquitous on tropical reef flats. However, the effects of such dynamic temperature variations on the early stages of corals are poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the responses of larvae and new recruits of Pocillopora damicornis to two constant temperature treatments (29 and 31 degrees C) and two diurnally fluctuating treatments (28-31 and 30-33 degrees C with daily means of 29 and 31 degrees C, respectively) simulating the 3 degrees C diel oscillations at 3m depth on the Luhuitou fringing reef (Sanya, China). Results showed that the thermal stress on settlement at 31 degrees C was almost negated by the fluctuating treatment. Further, neither elevated temperature nor temperature fluctuations caused bleaching responses in recruits, while the maximum excitation pressure over photosystem II (PSII) was reduced under fluctuating temperatures. Although early growth and development were highly stimulated at 31 degrees C, oscillations of 3 degrees C had little effects on budding and lateral growth at either mean temperature. Nevertheless, daytime encounters with the maximum temperature of 33 degrees C in fluctuating 31 degrees C elicited a notable reduction in calcification compared to constant 31 degrees C. These results underscore the complexity of the effects caused by diel temperature fluctuations on early stages of corals and suggest that ecologically relevant temperature variability could buffer warming stress on larval settlement and dampen the positive effects of increased temperatures on coral growth

Effects of a Sliding Plate on Morphology of the Epiphyseal Plate in Goat Distal Femur

The aim of this study was to observe the effects of a sliding plate on the morphology of the epiphyseal plate in goat distal femur. Eighteen premature female goats were divided randomly into sliding plate, regular plate and control groups. Radiographic analysis and histological staining were performed to evaluate the development of epiphyseal plate at 4 and 8 weeks after surgery. In the sliding plate group, the plate extended accordingly as the epiphyseal plate grows, and the epiphyseal morphology was kept essential normal. However, the phenomenon of the epiphyseal growth retardation and premature closure were very common in the regular plate group. In addition, the sliding plate group exhibited more normal histologic features and Safranin O staining compared to the regular plate group. Our results suggest that the sliding plate can provide reliable internal fixation of epiphyseal fracture without inhibiting epiphyseal growth
