    Effects of EGR rates on combustion and emission characteristics in a diesel engine with n-butanol/PODE3-4/diesel blends

    An experimental investigation is conducted on the influence of EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) rates (0–40%) on the combustion and emission characteristics of n-butanol/diesel/PODE3-4 blends at low-temperature combustion mode in diesel engine. The results show that at identical EGR rate, compared to D100 (diesel fuel), the peak values both of the mean cylinder pressure and the heat release rate of BD20 (20% butanol and 80% diesel in volume) are increased, ignition delay is extended, and the brake thermal efficiency is enhanced. Concerning BD20 blended with PODE3-4, the ignition delay is shortened, while both the brake thermal efficiency and the combustion efficiency increase. At the EGR rate below 30%, as the EGR rate grows, the effects on emission of soot, CO and HC are not significant, while the emission of NOx is sharply reduced; when the EGR rate is above 30%, as it grows, the emissions of soot, CO, and HC drastically rise. As EGR rate grows, the total particulate matter (PM) number concentrations of four fuels firstly decline and then rise, the total PM mass concentrations keep stable firstly and then rise drastically. As the proportion of added PODE3-4 in BD20 grows, the particle geometric mean diameters further decrease

    Efficient nano iron particle-labeling and noninvasive MR imaging of mouse bone marrow-derived endothelial progenitor cells

    In this study, we sought to label mouse bone marrow-derived endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) with Resovist® in vitro and to image them using 7.0 Tesla (T) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Mouse bone marrow-derived EPCs were cultured in endothelial basal medium with endothelial growth supplement. They were then characterized by immunocytochemistry, flow cytometry, and fluorescence quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Their functions were evaluated by measuring their uptake of 1,1-dioctadecyl-3,3,3,3-tetramethylindocarbocyanine-labeled acetylated low-density lipoprotein (Dil-Ac-LDL), binding of fluorine isothiocyanate (FITC)-labeled Ulex europaeus agglutinin (UEA), and formation of capillary-like networks. EPCs were labeled with superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) and their proliferation was then assessed in a water-soluble tetrazolium (WST-8)-based cell proliferation assay. Spin echo sequence (multislice, multiecho [MSME]) and gradient echo sequence (2D-FLASH) were used to detect differences in the numbers of labeled cells by 7.0 T MRI. The results showed that the cultured cells were of “cobblestone”-like shape and positive for CD133, CD34, CD31, von Willebrand factor, kinase domain receptor, and CD45, but negative for F4/80. They could take up Dil-Ac-LDL, bind FITC-UEA, and form capillary-like networks on Matrigel in vitro. Prussian-blue staining demonstrated that the cells were efficiently labeled with SPIO. The single-cell T2* effect was more obvious in the 2D-FLASH sequence than in the MSME sequence. Further, there were almost no adverse effects on cell vitality and proliferation. In conclusion, mouse bone marrow-derived EPCs can be efficiently labeled with SPIO and imaged with 7.0-T MRI. They may thus be traced by MRI following transplantation for blood vessel disorders and cancer treatment

    Free shipping with conditions has become one of the most effective marketing tools; more and more companies especially e-business companies prefer to offer free shipping to buyers whenever their orders exceed the minimum quantity specified by them. But in practice, the demands of buyers are uncertain, which are affected by weather, season, and many other factors. Firstly, we model the centralization ordering problem of retailers who face stochastic demands when suppliers offer free shipping, in which limited distributional information such as known mean, support, and some deviation measures of the random data is needed only. Then, based on the linear decision rule mainly for stochastic programming, we analyze the optimal order strategies of retailers and discuss the approximate solution. Further, we present the core allocation between all retailers via dual and cooperative game theory. The existence of core shows that each retailer is pleased to cooperate with others in the centralization problem. Finally, a numerical example is implemented to discuss how uncertain data and parameters affect the optimal solution

    Autonomic Dysfunction Because of Severe Tetanus in an Unvaccinated Child

    Tetanus is rare in a country with a national vaccination program. When it does occur, the associated autonomic dysfunction is a challenge for physicians. We report here a case of an unvaccinated 5-year-old boy who suffered from tetanus complicated by autonomic dysfunction, which was successfully controlled by the infusion of magnesium sulfate. This is the first case that demonstrated the therapeutic effect of magnesium sulfate in a child with tetanus. This case highlights the importance of implementing a vaccination program

    Immuno-modulatory activity of Ganoderma lucidum-derived polysacharide on human monocytoid dendritic cells pulsed with Der p 1 allergen

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p><it>Ganoderma lucidum</it>-derived polysaccharide (PS-G) can rapidly and effectively promote the activation and maturation of immature dendritic cells (DCs), suggesting that PS-G possesses the capacity to regulate immune responses. This study aimed to clarify the immunologic effect of PS-G on monocyte-derived dendritic cells (MD-DCs) from asthmatic children allergic to house dust mites. The MD-DCs were stimulated for 24 h with the related allergen, Der p 1, in the presence or absence of PS-G. Cell surface markers and phagocytic capacity were assessed by FACS analysis, and key polarizing cytokines (IL-12 p40, IL-12 p70, IL-6, IL-23, and IL-10) were quantified. The subsequent regulatory effect of pulsed MD-DCs on naïve T cells was evaluated by determining the T-cell cytokine profile.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>PS-G induced the maturation of MD-DCs and decreased phagocytic capacity, even if pulsed with Der p 1. After incubation with PS-G and Der p 1, MD-DCs produced higher amounts of IL-12 p70, IL-12 p40, IL-6, IL-23, and IL10 than Der p 1-pulsed DCs. Furthermore, type 1 helper T (Th1) cell cytokine (INF-γ) production was highly increased when naïve autologous T cells were co-cultured with Der p 1-pulsed MD-DCs. Naïve T cells stimulated by MD-DCs pulsed with Der p 1 failed to produce proliferation of T-cells, whereas the addition of PS-G to Der p 1 induced a significant proliferation of T-cells similar to that observed with PS-G alone.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The presence of PS-G in an allergen pulse promoted allergic MD-DCs to produce IL-12 p70, IL-12 p40, IL-6, IL-23, and IL-10, and exerted an effect on shifting the immune balance towards Th1 in children with allergic asthma.</p

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>DNA polymerase η (pol η) is capable of bypassing DNA adducts produced by cisplatin or oxaliplatin and is associated with cellular tolerance to platinum. Previous studies showed that defective pol η resulted in enhanced cisplatin or oxaliplatin sensitivity in some cell lines. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the role of pol η protein expression in metastatic gastric adenocarcinoma.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Four gastric adenocarcinoma cell lines were chosen to explore the relationship between pol η protein expression and oxaliplatin sensitivity by western blotting and MTT assay. Eighty metastatic gastric adenocarcinoma patients treated with FOLFOX or XELOX regimen as first-line chemotherapy were analyzed, corresponding pretreatment formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tumor tissues were used to detect pol η protein expression by immunohistochemistry. Relationship between pol η protein expression and clinical features and outcome of these patients was analyzed.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A positive linear relationship between pol η protein expression and 48 h IC50 values of oxaliplatin in four gastric cancer cell lines was observed. Positivity of pol η protein expression was strongly associated with poor treatment response, as well as shorter survival at both univariate (8 versus 14 months; P < 0.001) and multivariate (hazard ratio, 4.555; 95% confidence interval, 2.461-8.429; P < 0.001) analysis in eighty metastatic gastric adenocarcinoma patients.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our study indicates that polη is a predictive factor of treatment response and survival of metastatic gastric adenocarcinoma patients treated with FOLFOX or XELOX as first-line chemotherapy. Therefore confirming the value of polη in studies with prospective design is mandatory.</p

    Effects of processing parameters on the morphology, structure, and magnetic properties of Cu1−xFexCr2Se4 nanoparticles synthesized with chemical methods

    Cu1−xFexCr2Se4 nanoparticles with x = 0, 0.2, and 0.4 were synthesized via thermal decomposition of metal nitrate or chloride salts and selenium powder using different precursor compositions and processing details. Single crystalline nano-belts or nano-rods coexist in the synthesized powder samples with hexagon-shaped plates in dependence on the precursor composition. The belts gathered into conglomerates forming “hierarchical” particles. Visible magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) of Cu1−xFexCr2Se4 nanoparticles embedded into a transparent matrix was investigated for the first time. The similarity of the MCD spectra of all samples showed the similarity of the nanoparticles electronic structure independent of their morphology. Basing on the MCD spectral maxima characteristics, electron transitions from the ground to the excited states were identified with the help of the conventional band theory and the multi-electron approach

    Integrated Analysis Reveals That Long Non-Coding RNA TUBA4B Can Be Used as a Prognostic Biomarker in Various Cancers

    Background/Aims: Recent studies have reported the importance of tubulin alpha 4b (TUBA4B), a long non-coding RNA, in the development of several cancers; however, studies on its clinical significance are rare. In the present meta-analysis, we investigated whether TUBA4B can be used as a prognostic biomarker in human cancers. Methods: A comprehensive search was performed in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Gene Expression Omnibus databases. Hazard ratios from individual studies were calculated and pooled using a random-effects or fix-effects model. The pooled hazard ratio (HR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) was used to evaluate the value of TUBA4B. The expression of TUBA4B was evaluated in lung cancer tissue arrays by fluorescence in situ hybridization assay. Additionally, a sensitivity analysis and Begg’s test were conducted. Results: We found that TUBA4B was significantly correlated with overall survival (OS) (HR = 1.33, 95% CI: 1.16–1.52, P=0.000), disease-free survival (DFS; HR = 1.25, 95% CI: 1.06–1.48, P=0.007), and recurrence-free survival (RFS; HR = 1.42, 95% CI: 1.26–1.60, P=0.000). In addition, TUBA4B was a risk factor for lung cancer (HR = 1.24, 95% CI: 1.03–1.49, P=0.021), colon cancer (HR = 1.67, 95% CI: 1.02–2.74, P=0.042), breast cancer (HR = 1.52, 95% CI: 1.10–2.12, P=0.012), and ovarian cancer (HR = 1.67, 95% CI: 1.18–2.36, P=0.004). Moreover, LncRNA-TUBA4B was significantly lower expression in tumor tissues than normal lung tissues (P&#x3c; 0.001). The expression of lncRNA-TUBA4B was decreased with the progression of lung cancer stage. A subgroup meta-analysis based on data resource, sample size, region, patient numbers, and tumor type was further performed. Our studies revealed that tumor tissues with low levels of TUBA4B was significantly associated with short OS, DFS, and RFS in cancer patients. Conclusion: The present findings suggest that TUBA4B can be a novel biomarker for the prognosis of various cancers

    The Taiwan Oscillation Network (TON) is a ground-based network to measure solar intensity oscillations to study the internal structure of the Sun. K-line full-disk images of 1000 pixels diameter are taken at a rate of one image per minute. Such data would provide information onp-modes withl as high as 1000. The TON will consist of six identical telescope systems at proper longitudes around the world. Three telescope systems have been installed at Teide Observatory (Tenerife), Huairou Solar Observing Station (near Beijing), and Big Bear Solar Observatory (California). The telescopes at these three sites have been taking data simultaneously since October of 1994. Anl – v diagram derived from 512 images is included to show the quality of the data
