    Dynamic structure of stock communities: A comparative study between stock returns and turnover rates

    The detection of community structure in stock market is of theoretical and practical significance for the study of financial dynamics and portfolio risk estimation. We here study the community structures in Chinese stock markets from the aspects of both price returns and turnover rates, by using a combination of the PMFG and infomap methods based on a distance matrix. We find that a few of the largest communities are composed of certain specific industry or conceptional sectors and the correlation inside a sector is generally larger than the correlation between different sectors. In comparison with returns, the community structure for turnover rates is more complex and the sector effect is relatively weaker. The financial dynamics is further studied by analyzing the community structures over five sub-periods. Sectors like banks, real estate, health care and New Shanghai take turns to compose a few of the largest communities for both returns and turnover rates in different sub-periods. Several specific sectors appear in the communities with different rank orders for the two time series even in the same sub-period. A comparison between the evolution of prices and turnover rates of stocks from these sectors is conducted to better understand their differences. We find that stock prices only had large changes around some important events while turnover rates surged after each of these events relevant to specific sectors, which may offer a possible explanation for the complexity of stock communities for turnover rates

    Stability and convergence of the two parameter cubic spline collocation method for delay differential equations

    AbstractIn this paper, we propose the cubic spline collocation method with two parameters for solving delay differential equations (DDEs). Some results of the local truncation error and the convergence of the spline collocation method are given. We also obtain some results of the linear stability and the nonlinear stability of the method for DDEs. In particular, we design an algorithm to obtain the ranges of the two parameters α,β which are necessary for the P-stability of the collocation method. Some illustrative examples successfully verify our theoretical results

    Endocidal Regulation of Secondary Metabolites in the Producing Organisms

    Secondary metabolites are defined as organic compounds that are not directly involved in the normal growth, development, and reproduction of an organism. They are widely believed to be responsible for interactions between the producing organism and its environment, with the producer avoiding their toxicities. In our experiments, however, none of the randomly selected 44 species representing different groups of plants and insects can avoid autotoxicity by its endogenous metabolites once made available. We coined the term endocides (endogenous biocides) to describe such metabolites that can poison or inhibit the parent via induced biosynthesis or external applications. Dosage-dependent endocides can selectively induce morphological mutations in the parent organism (e.g., shrubbiness/dwarfism, pleiocotyly, abnormal leaf morphogenesis, disturbed phyllotaxis, fasciated stems, and variegation in plants), inhibit its growth, development, and reproduction and cause death than non-closely related species. The propagule, as well as the organism itself contains or produces adequate endocides to kill itself

    Strength characteristics and failure behavior of ubiquitous-joint rock-like specimens under compressive-shear stress: experimental study and digital speckle correlation method

    In nature, rock mass is subjected to compression-shear effect, so it is very important to study the failure mode and mechanical properties of fractured rock mass under compression-shear effect. In order to study the influence of joint inclination on strength characteristics and failure modes of rock mass under different compression-shear angles, a series of compression-shear tests were carried out. The specimens are made of a certain proportion of fine sand, cement and water. The joints are prefabricated by inserting mica sheets and the inclination angle of joints is 0°, 15°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 75°, 90°. Digital speckle correlation method is used to analyze the strain field of the specimen during the whole loading process. The specimens are speckled on the opposite side before the experiment. In the experiment, the front and back sides of the specimen are monitored by the camera, and the images are analyzed after the experiment. The result shows that: 1) The peak shear strength of specimens mainly increases with the increase of joint inclination angle; 2) The weakening degree of shear strength caused by joint inclination angle of specimens tends to increase as the compression-stress ratio increases; and 3) The failure modes can be classified into four types: coplanar shear failure mode, inclined shear failure mode, quasi-complete shear failure mode and step shear failure mode. The digital speckle strain images better prove the failure modes obtained from the experiment

    A Comparison of Contemporary Filial Piety in Rural and Non-Rural China and Taiwan

    Research has found that filial piety remains strong in Chinese societies, despite dramatic social and economic changes. However, little is known about differences in filial piety between rural and nonrural regions of China and Taiwan, as well as gender differences in filial piety. Using data from the 2006 East Asia Social Survey, results indicated that there were no differences in attitudes about filial piety and attitudes of financial support between rural and nonrural regions in China and Taiwan, as well between adult men and women. Caregiving for elderly parents was more common in rural China, compared to nonrural China, and men in rural China were more likely to be engaged than rural women in caregiving. There were no other differences in reports of caregiving. Overall, the results suggest a lessening of gender differences and rural vs. nonrural differences in filial piety in China and Taiwan

    Low-bias Negative Differential Resistance effect in armchair graphene nanoribbon junctions

    Graphene nanoribbons with armchair edges (AGNRs) have bandgaps that can be flexibly tuned via the ribbon width. A junction made of a narrower AGNR sandwiched between two wider AGNR leads was recently reported to possess two perfect transmission channels close to the Fermi level. Here, we report that by using a bias voltage to drive these transmission channels into the gap of the wider AGNR lead, we can obtain a negative differential resistance (NDR) effect. Owing to the intrinsic properties of the AGNR junctions, the on-set bias reaches as low as ~ 0.2 V and the valley current almost vanishes. We further show that such NDR effect is robust against details of the atomic structure of the junction, substrate and whether the junction is made by etching or by hydrogenation.Comment: The following article has been submitted to Applied Physics Letters (http://scitation.aip.org/content/aip/journal/apl).
