    Climatology of mesopause region nocturnal temperature, zonal wind, and sodium density observed by sodium lidar over Hefei, China (32°N, 117°E)

    The University of Science and Technology of China narrowband sodium temperature/wind 16 lidar, located in Hefei, China (32°N, 117°E), has made routine nighttime measurements since 17 January 2012. 154 nights (~1400 hours) of vertical profiles of temperature, sodium density, 18 and zonal wind, and 83 nights (~800 hours) of vertical flux of gravity wave (GW) zonal 19 momentum in the mesopause region (80-105 km) have been obtained during the period from 20 2012 to 2016. In temperature, it is most likely that the diurnal tide dominates below 100 km in 21 spring, while the semidiurnal tide dominates above 100 km throughout the year. A clear 22 semiannual variation in temperature is revealed near 90 km, in phase with the tropical 23 mesospheric semiannual oscillation (MSAO). The variability of sodium density is positively 24 correlated with temperature below 95 km, suggesting that in addition to dynamics, the 25 chemistry also plays an important role in the formation of sodium atoms. The seasonal 26 variability of sodium density observed by both lidar and satellite generally agrees well with a 27 whole atmosphere model simulation using an updated meteoric input function which includes 28 different cosmic dust sources. In zonal wind, the diurnal tide dominates in both spring and fall, 29 while semidiurnal tide dominates in winter. The observed semiannual variation in zonal wind 30 near 90 km is out-of-phase with that in temperature, consistent with the tropical MSAO. The 31 GW zonal momentum flux is mostly westward in fall and winter, anti-correlated with eastward zonal wind. The annual mean flux averaged over 87-97 km is ~-0.3 m 2 /s2 32 33 (westward), anti-correlated with eastward zonal wind of ~10 m/s. The lidar observations 34 generally agree with satellite and meteor radar observations as well as model simulations at 35 similar latitudes

    The International-Trade Network: Gravity Equations and Topological Properties

    This paper begins to explore the determinants of the topological properties of the international - trade network (ITN). We fit bilateral-trade flows using a standard gravity equation to build a "residual" ITN where trade-link weights are depurated from geographical distance, size, border effects, trade agreements, and so on. We then compare the topological properties of the original and residual ITNs. We find that the residual ITN displays, unlike the original one, marked signatures of a complex system, and is characterized by a very different topological architecture. Whereas the original ITN is geographically clustered and organized around a few large-sized hubs, the residual ITN displays many small-sized but trade-oriented countries that, independently of their geographical position, either play the role of local hubs or attract large and rich countries in relatively complex trade-interaction patterns

    The antioxidant activity of some curcuminoids and chalcones

    The antioxidant properties of the synthetic compound (C1)–(C8), which comprised 7 curcuminoids and a chalcone, were evaluated by two complementary assays, DPPH and β-carotene/linoleic acid. It was found that, in general, the free radical scavenging ability of (C1)–(C8) was concentration-dependent. Compounds (C1) and (C4), which contained (4-OH) phenolic groups, were found to be highly potent antioxidants with higher antioxidant values than BHT suggesting that synthetic curcuminoids are more potent antioxidants than standard antioxidants like BHT. Using β-carotene-linoleic acid assay, only the water-soluble 2, 4,6-trihydroxyphenolic chalcone (C5) showed 85.2 % inhibition of the formation of conjugated dienes reflecting on its potent antioxidant activity

    Null Models of Economic Networks: The Case of the World Trade Web

    In all empirical-network studies, the observed properties of economic networks are informative only if compared with a well-defined null model that can quantitatively predict the behavior of such properties in constrained graphs. However, predictions of the available null-model methods can be derived analytically only under assumptions (e.g., sparseness of the network) that are unrealistic for most economic networks like the World Trade Web (WTW). In this paper we study the evolution of the WTW using a recently-proposed family of null network models. The method allows to analytically obtain the expected value of any network statistic across the ensemble of networks that preserve on average some local properties, and are otherwise fully random. We compare expected and observed properties of the WTW in the period 1950-2000, when either the expected number of trade partners or total country trade is kept fixed and equal to observed quantities. We show that, in the binary WTW, node-degree sequences are sufficient to explain higher-order network properties such as disassortativity and clustering-degree correlation, especially in the last part of the sample. Conversely, in the weighted WTW, the observed sequence of total country imports and exports are not sufficient to predict higher-order patterns of the WTW.     Trypanosoma brucei Modifies the Tsetse Salivary Composition, Altering the Fly Feeding Behavior That Favors Parasite Transmission

    Tsetse flies are the notorious transmitters of African trypanosomiasis, a disease caused by the Trypanosoma parasite that affects humans and livestock on the African continent. Metacyclic infection rates in natural tsetse populations with Trypanosoma brucei, including the two human-pathogenic subspecies, are very low, even in epidemic situations. Therefore, the infected fly/host contact frequency is a key determinant of the transmission dynamics. As an obligate blood feeder, tsetse flies rely on their complex salivary potion to inhibit host haemostatic reactions ensuring an efficient feeding. The results of this experimental study suggest that the parasite might promote its transmission through manipulation of the tsetse feeding behavior by modifying the saliva composition. Indeed, salivary gland Trypanosoma brucei-infected flies display a significantly prolonged feeding time, thereby enhancing the likelihood of infecting multiple hosts during the process of a single blood meal cycle. Comparison of the two major anti-haemostatic activities i.e. anti-platelet aggregation and anti-coagulation activity in these flies versus non-infected tsetse flies demonstrates a significant suppression of these activities as a result of the trypanosome-infection status. This effect was mainly related to the parasite-induced reduction in salivary gland gene transcription, resulting in a strong decrease in protein content and related biological activities. Additionally, the anti-thrombin activity and inhibition of thrombin-induced coagulation was even more severely hampered as a result of the trypanosome infection. Indeed, while naive tsetse saliva strongly inhibited human thrombin activity and thrombin-induced blood coagulation, saliva from T. brucei-infected flies showed a significantly enhanced thrombinase activity resulting in a far less potent anti-coagulation activity. These data clearly provide evidence for a trypanosome-mediated modification of the tsetse salivary composition that results in a drastically reduced anti-haemostatic potential and a hampered feeding performance which could lead to an increase of the vector/host contact and parasite transmission in field conditions

    The Hall-Petch effect as a manifestation of the general size effect

    The experimental evidence for the Hall-Petch dependence of strength on the inverse square-root of grain size is reviewed critically. Both the classic data and more recent results are considered. While the data can be fitted to the inverse square-root dependence excellently (but using two free fitting parameters for each dataset), it is also consistent with a dependence on the simple inverse of grain size (with one free fitting parameter for each dataset). There have been difficulties, recognised for half-a-century, in explaining the inverse square-root expression. A Bayesian analysis shows that the data strongly supports the simple inverse expression proposed. Since this expression derives from underlying theory, it is also more readily explicable. It is concluded that the Hall-Petch effect is not to be explained by the variety of theories found in the literature, but is a manifestation of, or underlain by, the general size effect observed throughout micromechanics, due to the inverse relationship between the stress required and the space available for dislocation sources to operate.Comment: Paper presented at Plasticity 2014, The Bahama
