    On the existence of a finite-temperature transition in the two-dimensional gauge glass

    Results from Monte Carlo simulations of the two-dimensional gauge glass supporting a zero-temperature transition are presented. A finite-size scaling analysis of the correlation length shows that the system does not exhibit spin-glass order at finite temperatures.     The mechanisms that determine the response of the Northern Hemisphere’s stationary waves to North American Ice Sheets

    Stationary waves describe the persistent meanders in the west–east flow of the extratropical atmosphere. Here, changes in stationary waves caused by ice sheets over North America are examined and the underlying mechanisms are discussed. Three experiment sets are presented showing the stationary wave response to the albedo or topography of ice sheets, as well as the albedo and topography in combination, as the forcings evolve from 21 to 6 ka. It is found that although the wintertime stationary waves have the largest amplitude, changes due to an ice sheet are equally large in summer and winter. In summer, ice sheet albedo is the dominant cause of changes: topography alone gives an opposite response to realistic ice sheets including albedo and topography. In winter, over the Atlantic, stationary wave changes are due to the ice sheet topography; over the Pacific, they are due to the persistence of summertime changes, mediated by changes in the ocean circulation. It is found that the response of stationary waves over the last deglaciation echoes the above conclusions, with no evidence of abrupt shifts in atmospheric circulation. The response linearly weakens as the albedo and height decrease from 21 to 10 ka. As potential applications, the seasonal cycle over Greenland is shown to be sensitive primarily to changes in summer climate caused by the stationary waves; the annual mean circulation over the North Pacific is found to result from summertime, albedo-forced, stationary wave effects persisting throughout the year because of ocean dynamics.publishedVersio

    Dynamics of ballistically injected latex particles in living human endothelial cells

    We studied the dynamics of ballistically injected latex particles (BIP) inside endothelial cells, using video particle tracking to measure the mean squared displacement (MSD) as a function of lag time. The MSD shows a plateau at short times and a linear behavior at longer times, indicating that the BIP are trapped into a viscoelastic network. To reveal more about the molecular constituents and the dynamics of this actin network, we added a variety of drugs. Latrunculin and Jasplakinolide aimed at intervening with the actin network caused a strong increase in MSD, whereas Taxol aimed at microtubules gave no measurable change in MSD. Additional corroborating information about these drug effects were obtained from MSD amplitude and exponent distributions and from fluorescent staining images of the actin and microtubule networks. Our evidence strongly suggests that BIP are primarily embedded in the actin network. Additional drug interventions aimed at disabling non-thermal forces could not conclusively resolve the nature of the forces driving BIP dynamics

    Zero Temperature Glass Transition in the Two-Dimensional Gauge Glass Model

    We investigate dynamic scaling properties of the two-dimensional gauge glass model for the vortex glass phase in superconductors with quenched disorder. From extensive Monte Carlo simulations we obtain static and dynamic finite size scaling behavior, where the static simulations use a temperature exchange method to ensure convergence at low temperatures. Both static and dynamic scaling of Monte Carlo data is consistent with a glass transition at zero temperature. We study a dynamic correlation function for the superconducting order parameter, as well as the phase slip resistance. From the scaling of these two functions, we find evidence for two distinct diverging correlation times at the zero temperature glass transition. The longer of these time scales is associated with phase slip fluctuations across the system that lead to finite resistance at any finite temperature, while the shorter time scale is associated with local phase fluctuations.Comment: 8 pages, 10 figures; v2: some minor correction

    Effects of yeast culture on broiler growth performance, nutrient digestibility and caecal microbiota

    This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of yeast culture (YC) supplementation on the growth performance, apparent nutrient digestibility and caecal microflora of broiler chickens. A total of 360 one-day-old Arbor Acres broiler chickens were randomly assigned to six dietary treatments containing 0.2%, 0.4%, 0.6%, 0.8% and 1% YC. The experiment lasted for 42 days. Diet and faecal samples were collected for analysis of dry matter, crude protein, ether extract, calcium and phosphorus. Caecal microbiota on days 21 and 42 were measured using polymerase chain reaction-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE) and real-time PCR. Dietary supplementation with YC did not affect feed intake. On day 42, the 0.8% YC group showed optimal growth and feed efficiency, as well as higher levels of apparent digestibility of ether extract, calcium and phosphorus. On day 21, both 0.8% and 1% YC groups exhibited a significant increase in Ruminococcus, Propionibacterium clostridiales, and Bifidobacterium density. The density of Bacteroides in the YC groups was significantly higher than that of the control group. On day 42, the densities of Bacteroides, Sphingomonas and Bifidobacterium were higher in the 0.8% YC group, whereas a significant decrease was observed in the number of Enterobacteriaceae. These results serve as evidence that dietary supplementation with 0.8% YC not only moderately optimized the feed efficiency and the apparent digestibility of ether extract, calcium and phosphorus, but also positively influenced the caecal bacterial density and diversity in broiler chickens.Keywords: Arbor Acres broiler, caecal microflora, yeast culture supplementatio

    Applicability of perturbative QCD to Λb→Λc\Lambda_b \to \Lambda_c decays

    We develop perturbative QCD factorization theorem for the semileptonic heavy baryon decay Λb→Λclνˉ\Lambda_b \to \Lambda_c l\bar{\nu}, whose form factors are expressed as the convolutions of hard bb quark decay amplitudes with universal Λb\Lambda_b and Λc\Lambda_c baryon wave functions. Large logarithmic corrections are organized to all orders by the Sudakov resummation, which renders perturbative expansions more reliable. It is observed that perturbative QCD is applicable to Λb→Λc\Lambda_b \to \Lambda_c decays for velocity transfer greater than 1.2. Under requirement of heavy quark symmetry, we predict the branching ratio B(Λb→Λclνˉ)∼2B(\Lambda_b \to \Lambda_c l{\bar\nu})\sim 2%, and determine the Λb\Lambda_b and Λc\Lambda_c baryon wave functions.Comment: 12 pages in Latex file, 3 figures in postscript files, some results are changed, but the conclusion is the sam

    A Cluster Method for the Ashkin--Teller Model

    A cluster Monte Carlo algorithm for the Ashkin-Teller (AT) model is constructed according to the guidelines of a general scheme for such algorithms. Its dynamical behaviour is tested for the square lattice AT model. We perform simulations on the line of critical points along which the exponents vary continuously, and find that critical slowing down is significantly reduced. We find continuous variation of the dynamical exponent zz along the line, following the variation of the ratio α/ν\alpha/\nu, in a manner which satisfies the Li-Sokal bound zcluster≥α/νz_{cluster}\geq\alpha/\nu, that was so far proved only for Potts models.Comment: 18 pages, Revtex, figures include
