    A Novel Test of the Duchenne Marker: Smiles After Botulinum Toxin Treatment for Crow’s Feet Wrinkles

Previous research suggests that “Duchenne smiles,” indicated by the combined actions of the orbicularis oculi (cheek raiser) and the zygomaticus major muscles (lip corner puller), signal enjoyment. This research has compared perceptions of Duchenne smiles with non-Duchenne smiles among individuals voluntarily innervating or inhibiting the orbicularis oculi muscle. Here we used a novel set of highly controlled stimuli: photographs of patients taken before and after receiving botulinum toxin treatment for crow’s feet lines that selectively paralyzed the lateral orbicularis oculi muscle and removed visible lateral eye wrinkles, to test perception of smiles. Smiles in which the orbicularis muscle was active (prior to treatment) were rated as more felt, spontaneous, intense, and happier. Post treatment patients looked younger, although not more attractive. We discuss the potential implications of these findings within the context of emotion science and clinical research on botulinum toxin

    The role of facial movements in emotion recognition

    Most past research on emotion recognition has used photographs of posed expressions intended to depict the apex of the emotional display. Although these studies have provided important insights into how emotions are perceived in the face, they necessarily leave out any role of dynamic information. In this Review, we synthesize evidence from vision science, affective science and neuroscience to ask when, how and why dynamic information contributes to emotion recognition, beyond the information conveyed in static images. Dynamic displays offer distinctive temporal information such as the direction, quality and speed of movement, which recruit higher-level cognitive processes and support social and emotional inferences that enhance judgements of facial affect. The positive influence of dynamic information on emotion recognition is most evident in suboptimal conditions when observers are impaired and/or facial expressions are degraded or subtle. Dynamic displays further recruit early attentional and motivational resources in the perceiver, facilitating the prompt detection and prediction of others’ emotional states, with benefits for social interaction. Finally, because emotions can be expressed in various modalities, we examine the multimodal integration of dynamic and static cues across different channels, and conclude with suggestions for future research

    Non-linear behaviour and failure mechanism of bamboo poles in bending

    The adoption of bamboo poles in construction can support the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions generated by the manufacture of conventional structural elements produced from unsustainable industrialised materials. This research focuses on the study of the nonlinear softening behaviour and failure mechanism of bamboo poles in bending through a series of experimental tests on Moso (Phyllostachys pubescens) bamboo and Finite Element simulations supported by digitisation techniques. The results indicate that this nonlinear behaviour is caused by the incremental development of cracks at the locations where the circumferential tensile capacity of bamboo is exceeded leading to the eventual failure of the pole. Also, the simulations in this study suggest that reinforcing bamboo poles with pretensioned stainless steel bands is ineffective in counteracting the development of significant circumferential tensile stresses and the associated longitudinal cracks. More generally, this work highlights the challenges and limitations of applying traditional methods of structural testing and design for manufactured components to a highly variable natural structural element and speculates whether modern digital technologies can be adopted to manage more effectively the effects of this inherent variability

    Measuring change in health status of older adults at the population level: The transition probability model

    BACKGROUND: The current demographic transition will lead to increasing demands on health services. However, debate exists as to the role age plays relative to co-morbidity in terms of health services utilization. While age has been identified as a critical factor in health services utilization, health services utilization is not simply an outcome of ill health, nor is it an inevitable outcome of aging. Most data on health service utilization studies assess utilization at one point in time, and does not examine transitions in health service utilization. We sought to measure health services utilization and to investigate patterns in the transition of levels of utilization and outcomes associated with different levels of utilization. METHODS: We conducted a population-based retrospective cohort study of all Ontario residents aged 65+ eligible for public healthcare coverage from January 1998-December 2006. The main outcome measure was total number of utilization events. The total is computed by summing, on a per annum basis, the number of family physician visits, specialist visits, Emergency Department visits, drug claims, lab claims, X-rays, CT scans, MRI scans, and inpatient admissions. Three categories of utilization were created: low, moderate, and high. RESULTS: There is heterogeneity in health services utilization across the late lifespan. Utilization increased consistently in the 9-year study period. The probability of remaining at the high utilization category when the person was in the high category the previous year was more than 0.70 for both males and females and for all age groups. Overall healthcare utilization increases more rapidly among the high users compared to the low users. There was negligible probability for moving from high to low utilization category. Probability of death increased exponentially as age increased. Older adults in the low utilization category had the lowest probability of death. The number of male nonagenarians increased more rapidly than female nonagenarians. CONCLUSION: There are measurable and identifiable differences in the patterns of health services utilization among older adults. This data will permit clinicians and policy makers to tailor interventions appropriate to the risk class of patients

    Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults Associated with Von Recklinghausen’s Disease (Neurofibromatosis Type 1)

    Introduction: Endocrine disorders during Von Recklinghausen’s Disease or neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) are rare and particularly observed in children. However, autoimmune diabetes mellitus (DM) remains exceptional and unusual during this phacomatosis. We report an original case of Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults (LADA) associated with NF1.Case Report: A 32-year-old Tunisian male, known to have NF1 since childhood, was admitted for significant recent weight loss (10 kg in one month) with high blood glucose levels. The biological tests confirmed the diagnosis of DM with marked ketoacidosis: fast blood glucose at 16 mmol/l, postprandial glucose at 21 mmol/l, and HbA1c at 9.9%. Radiological and endoscopic investigations did not indicate pancreatic and/or duodenal tumors. Anti-GAD and anti-IA2 autoantibodies were positively confirming the diagnosis of LADA. The assessment of degenerative complications and screening for possible other autoimmune diseases were negative. The evolution was favorable under intensive insulinotherapy.Conclusion: The association of DM type 1 with NF1 remains exceptional and only four cases are found in the literature, all pediatrics. Our observation is, to our knowledge, the first reporting this association in adult (LADA with NF1)

By spatiotemporal subchannel selection and power control, it aims to minimize the average transmit power (ATP) of the MIMO system while achieving an exponential type of average bit error rate (BER) for each data stream. Under the constraints on each subchannel that individual outage probability and average BER are given, based on a traditional upper bound and a dynamic upper bound of Q function, two closed-form ATP expressions are derived, respectively, which can result in two different power allocation schemes. Numerical results are provided to validate the theoretical analysis, and show that the power allocation scheme with the dynamic upper bound can achieve more power savings than the one with the traditional upper bound.Peer reviewe

    Need for continual education about disaster medicine for health professionals in China-a pilot study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Disaster Medicine training is not included in medical education curriculum in China, even though the country has suffered various disasters annually. We intended to assess the need for continual education regarding disaster management for health professionals in China.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A survey was conducted among 324 health professionals who participated in the response to the Wenchuan earthquake medical relief and public health assessment in October, 2008.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The most of participants (67.3%) received informal disaster medicine training, and only a few (12.7%) participated in disaster drills. Most of the participants wanted to get continual education about disaster medicine training (89.8%), but prefer on-line training course for the flexibility of time scheduling and travel through China.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The need for continual disaster medicine training is high; health professionals should be equipped with knowledge and skills for disaster management.</p

    Strong Casimir force reduction through metallic surface nanostructuring

    The Casimir force between bodies in vacuum can be understood as arising from their interaction with an infinite number of fluctuating electromagnetic quantum vacuum modes, resulting in a complex dependence on the shape and material of the interacting objects. Becoming dominant at small separations, the force plays a significant role in nanomechanics and object manipulation at the nanoscale, leading to a considerable interest in identifying structures where the Casimir interaction behaves significantly different from the well-known attractive force between parallel plates. Here we experimentally demonstrate that by nanostructuring one of the interacting metal surfaces at scales below the plasma wavelength, an unexpected regime in the Casimir force can be observed. Replacing a flat surface with a deep metallic lamellar grating with sub-100 nm features strongly suppresses the Casimir force and for large inter-surfaces separations reduces it beyond what would be expected by any existing theoretical prediction.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figure

    Patent Human Infections with the Whipworm, Trichuris trichiura, Are Not Associated with Alterations in the Faecal Microbiota

    Background: The soil-transmitted helminth (STH), Trichuris trichiura colonises the human large intestine where it may modify inflammatory responses, an effect possibly mediated through alterations in the intestinal microbiota. We hypothesised that patent T. trichiura infections would be associated with altered faecal microbiota and that anthelmintic treatment would induce a microbiota resembling more closely that observed in uninfected individuals. Materials and Methods: School children in Ecuador were screened for STH infections and allocated to 3 groups: uninfected, T. trichiura only, and mixed infections with T. trichiura and Ascaris lumbricoides. A sample of uninfected children and those with T. trichiura infections only were given anthelmintic treatment. Bacterial community profiles in faecal samples were studied by 454 pyrosequencing of 16 S rRNA genes. Results: Microbiota analyses of faeces were done for 97 children: 30 were uninfected, 17 were infected with T. trichiura, and 50 with T. trichiura and A. lumbricoides. Post-treatment samples were analyzed for 14 children initially infected with T. trichiura alone and for 21 uninfected children. Treatment resulted in 100% cure of STH infections. Comparisons of the microbiota at different taxonomic levels showed no statistically significant differences in composition between uninfected children and those with T. trichiura infections. We observed a decreased proportional abundance of a few bacterial genera from the Clostridia class of Firmicutes and a reduced bacterial diversity among children with mixed infections compared to the other two groups, indicating a possible specific effect of A. lumbricoides infection. Anthelmintic treatment of children with T. trichiura did not alter faecal microbiota composition. Discussion: Our data indicate that patent human infections with T. trichiura may have no effect on faecal microbiota but that A. lumbricoides colonisation might be associated with a disturbed microbiota. Our results also catalogue the microbiota of rural Ecuadorians and indicate differences with individuals from more urban industrialised societies
