Bubble Flow Analysis of High Speed Cylindrical Roller Bearing under Fluid-Solid Thermal Coupling
Heat generation model of high speed cylindrical roller bearing is constructed by calculating the local friction in the bearing. Bubble flow calculation model of roller bearing considering fluid-solid thermal coupling is constructed based on two-body fluid model and k-ε turbulent model, in which diameter and size of bubbles, breakup, and coalescence model of bubbles are considered. Using dynamic mesh method, a new method for evaluating bearing temperature is set up treating the rolling elements as moving heat sources. Based on these models and finite element method, bubble flow of a high speed roller bearing is studied based on FLUENT software. The numerical study reveals the relationship between velocity of bearing, air volume fraction, and velocity and pressure of oil-air flow. An increase of air content in the oil produces a lower pressure at the bearing outlet while the exit fluid velocity increases. When fluid-solid thermal coupling effect is considered, velocity and pressure at outlet of the bearing both become larger, while temperature of bearing is lower than that without coupling. In comparison, the coupling effects on flow pressure and temperature are obvious. For a given rotating speed, there is an optimal value for air volume fraction, such that temperature rise of the bearing reaches the lowest value. Experiments verify the outcomes of the method presented in this paper
followers of honey bee tremble and waggle dances exhibit similar behaviors
The function of the honey bee tremble dance and how it attracts signal
receivers is poorly understood. We tested the hypothesis that tremble
followers and waggle followers exhibit the same dance-following behavior. If
correct, this could unify our understanding of dance following, provide
insight into dance information transfer, and offer a way to identify the
signal receivers of tremble dance information. Followers showed similar
initial attraction to and tracking of dancers. However, waggle dancers were
faster than tremble dancers, and follower-forward, -sideways, and -angular
velocities were generally similar to the velocities of their respective
dancers. Waggle dancers attracted followers from 1.3-fold greater distances
away than tremble dancers. Both follower types were attracted to the lateral
sides of dancers, but tremble followers were more attracted to the dancer's
head, and waggle followers were more attracted to the dancer's abdomen.
Tremble dancers engaged in 4-fold more brief food exchanges with their
followers than waggle dancers. The behaviors of both follower types are
therefore relatively conserved. Researchers can now take the next steps,
observing tremble followers to determine their subsequent behaviors and
testing the broader question of whether follower attraction and tracking is
conserved in a wide range of social insects
Clinical efficacy of radical nephrectomy versus nephron-sparing surgery on localized renal cell carcinoma
BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study was to compare the clinical efficacy of radical nephrectomy (RN) with nephron-sparing surgery (NSS) in treating patients with localized renal cell carcinoma (RCC). METHODS: The literature search was performed in PubMed, MEDLINE Springer, Elsevier Science Direct, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar up to December 2012. The software Review Manager 5.1 and the STATA software package v.11.0 were used for analyses. The odds ratios (ORs) and its 95% confidence interval (95% CI) were calculated for comparison. Subgroup analyses were performed based on the tumor size of RCC. RESULTS: In total, 10 studies with 10,174 RCC patients (7,050 treated with RN and 3,124 treated with NSS) were selected. The pooled estimate (OR = 1.58, 95% CI = 1.15–2.15, P = 0.004) showed a significantly lower rate of cancer-specific deaths in the patients treated with NSS compared to RN. However, no statistically significant differences were found in the rate of tumor recurrence (OR = 0.84, 95% CI = 0.67–1.06, P = 0.14) and complications (OR = 0.91, 95% CI = 0.51–1.63, P = 0.74) between the patients treated with NSS and RN. In addition, all the subgroup analyses presented consistent results with the overall analyses. CONCLUSIONS: NSS had no significantly different from RN in tumor recurrence and complications for localized RCC. However, the significantly lower rate of cancer-specific deaths supported the use of NSS not only for RCC with tumor size >4.0 cm but also for tumor sizes ≤4.0 cm compared with RN
A Survey on Knowledge-Enhanced Pre-trained Language Models
Natural Language Processing (NLP) has been revolutionized by the use of
Pre-trained Language Models (PLMs) such as BERT. Despite setting new records in
nearly every NLP task, PLMs still face a number of challenges including poor
interpretability, weak reasoning capability, and the need for a lot of
expensive annotated data when applied to downstream tasks. By integrating
external knowledge into PLMs,
\textit{\underline{K}nowledge-\underline{E}nhanced \underline{P}re-trained
\underline{L}anguage \underline{M}odels} (KEPLMs) have the potential to
overcome the above-mentioned limitations. In this paper, we examine KEPLMs
systematically through a series of studies. Specifically, we outline the common
types and different formats of knowledge to be integrated into KEPLMs, detail
the existing methods for building and evaluating KEPLMS, present the
applications of KEPLMs in downstream tasks, and discuss the future research
directions. Researchers will benefit from this survey by gaining a quick and
comprehensive overview of the latest developments in this field.Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures, 192 reference
Properties and Mechanisms of Self-Sensing Carbon Nanofibers/Epoxy Composites for Structural Health Monitoring
In this paper, carbon nanofibers (CNFs) with high aspect ratio were dispersed into epoxy matrix via mechanical stirring and ultrasonic treatment to fabricate self-sensing CNFs/epoxy composites. The mechanical, electrical and piezoresistive properties of the nanocomposites filled with different contents of CNFs were investigated. Based on the tunneling conduction and percolation conduction theories, the mechanisms of piezoresistive property of the nanocomposites were also explored. The experimental results show that adding CNFs can effectively enhance the compressive strengths and elastic moduli of the composites. The percolation threshold of the CNFs/epoxy composites is 0.186 vol% according to the modified General Effective Media Equation. Moreover, the stable and sensitive piezoresistive response of CNFs/epoxy composites was observed under monotonic and cyclic loadings. It can be demonstrated that adding CNFs into epoxy-based composites provides an innovative means of self-sensing, and the high sensitivity and stable piezoresistivity endow the CNFs/epoxy composites with considerable potentials as efficient compressive strain sensors for structural health monitoring of civil infrastructures
Calcium-tin alloys as anodes for rechargeable non-aqueous calcium-ion batteries at room temperature
Rechargeable calcium batteries possess attractive features for sustainable energy-storage solutions owing to their high theoretical energy densities, safety aspects and abundant natural resources. However, divalent Ca-ions and reactive Ca metal strongly interact with cathode materials and non-aqueous electrolyte solutions, leading to high charge-transfer barriers at the electrode-electrolyte interface and consequently low electrochemical performance. Here, we demonstrate the feasibility and elucidate the electrochemical properties of calcium-tin (Ca–Sn) alloy anodes for Ca-ion chemistries. Crystallographic and microstructural characterizations reveal that Sn formed from electrochemically dealloying the Ca–Sn alloy possesses unique properties, and that this in-situ formed Sn undergoes subsequent reversible calciation/decalciation as CaSn(3). As demonstration of the suitability of Ca–Sn alloys as anodes for Ca-ion batteries, we assemble coin cells with an organic cathode (1,4-polyanthraquinone) in an electrolyte of 0.25 M calcium tetrakis(hexafluoroisopropyloxy)borate in dimethoxyethane. These electrochemical cells are charged/discharged for 5000 cycles at 260 mA g(−1), retaining a capacity of 78 mAh g(−1) with respect to the organic cathode. The discovery of new class of Ca–Sn alloy anodes opens a promising avenue towards viable high-performance Ca-ion batteries
Capturing Data Uncertainty in High-Volume Stream Processing
We present the design and development of a data stream system that captures
data uncertainty from data collection to query processing to final result
generation. Our system focuses on data that is naturally modeled as continuous
random variables. For such data, our system employs an approach grounded in
probability and statistical theory to capture data uncertainty and integrates
this approach into high-volume stream processing. The first component of our
system captures uncertainty of raw data streams from sensing devices. Since
such raw streams can be highly noisy and may not carry sufficient information
for query processing, our system employs probabilistic models of the data
generation process and stream-speed inference to transform raw data into a
desired format with an uncertainty metric. The second component captures
uncertainty as data propagates through query operators. To efficiently quantify
result uncertainty of a query operator, we explore a variety of techniques
based on probability and statistical theory to compute the result distribution
at stream speed. We are currently working with a group of scientists to
evaluate our system using traces collected from the domains of (and eventually
in the real systems for) hazardous weather monitoring and object tracking and
monitoring.Comment: CIDR 200
Case report: Phosphoinositide 3-kinase inhibitor with fulvestrant in a patient with ER+/HER2- metastatic breast carcinoma induced fatal arrhythmias: a preventable event?
Phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) inhibitors have shown synergistic anticancer effects with endocrine therapy against ER+/PIK3CA-mutated breast cancer. PI3K inhibitors for cancer therapy are becoming more common. There is an increasing need to understand their cardiac adverse events. In this report, we describe the features of near-fatal mixed arrhythmias in a patient who was undergoing a phase Ib clinical study of PI3Kα inhibitor with fulvestrant. Subsequently, the patient survived by cardiopulmonary resuscitation and therefore did not die. This case highlights that PI3K inhibitors can induce QT/QTc prolongation and predispose patients to TdP. The combination of QT/QTc prolongation in combination with prolonged cardiac repolarization, such as an AV block during treatment with PI3Kα inhibitor, may aggravate the occurrence of TdP. It is likely to be a safer strategy to adjust the standard of discontinuing drugs and continuing drugs (QTc interval was <500 and <60 ms at baseline) or choose other types of alternative treatment options. This report provided some ideas for clinicians to identify early and prevent the occurrence of fatal arrhythmias during anticancer treatment
