    Development of the Risk Management Mechanism of an Enterprise Resource Planning System based on Work System Method

    This study collects 24 risk-management-relevant research papers published between 2000 and 2010 to elicit significant risk factors and thus develop the risk management mechanism of an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system. The study adopts the grounded theory and conducts an expert questionnaire in order to report its findings on 49 risk factors. Based on the work system method, the identified factors are classified into nine categories and a risk management mechanism is developed thereafter. Finally, to examine the feasibility of the mechanism, two case studies are further investigated. The developed mechanism is found to be a convenient, quick, and proper ERP system risk management tool that can assist enterprises in identifying, analyzing, assessing, and responding to potential risks

    Retraction and Generalized Extension of Computing with Words

    Fuzzy automata, whose input alphabet is a set of numbers or symbols, are a formal model of computing with values. Motivated by Zadeh's paradigm of computing with words rather than numbers, Ying proposed a kind of fuzzy automata, whose input alphabet consists of all fuzzy subsets of a set of symbols, as a formal model of computing with all words. In this paper, we introduce a somewhat general formal model of computing with (some special) words. The new features of the model are that the input alphabet only comprises some (not necessarily all) fuzzy subsets of a set of symbols and the fuzzy transition function can be specified arbitrarily. By employing the methodology of fuzzy control, we establish a retraction principle from computing with words to computing with values for handling crisp inputs and a generalized extension principle from computing with words to computing with all words for handling fuzzy inputs. These principles show that computing with values and computing with all words can be respectively implemented by computing with words.     Speeding Up RSA Encryption Using GPU Parallelization

    Abstract-Due to the ever-increasing computing capability of high performance computers today, in order to protect encrypted data from being cracked, the bit number used in RSA, a common and practicable public-key cryptosystem, is also getting longer, resulting in increasing operation time spent in executing the RSA algorithm. We also note that while the development of CPU has reached limits, the graphics processing unit (GPU), a highly parallel programmable processor, has become an integral part of today's mainstream computing systems. Therefore, it is a savvy choice to take advantage of GPU computing to accelerate computation of the RSA algorithm and enhance its applicability as well. After analyzing the RSA algorithm, we find that big number operations consume most parts of computing resources. As the benefit acquired from combining Montgomery with GPU-based parallel methods is not high enough, we further introduce the Fourier transform and Newton's method to design a new parallel algorithm to accelerate the computation of big numbers

    Impaired dendritic cell maturation and IL-10 production following H. pylori stimulation in gastric cancer patients

    The current study was to investigate the interaction between Helicobacter pylori and human dendritic cells (DCs). Whether impaired DC function can influence the outcome of H. pylori infections. Human monocyte-derived DCs (MDDCs) from five gastric cancer patients and nine healthy controls were stimulated with H. pylori. Maturation markers of MDDC were examined by flow cytometry. IL-10 and TNF-α released by MDDCs and IL-17 produced by T cells were measured by ELISA. Regulatory signaling pathways of IL-10 were examined by ELISA, western blotting, and chromatin immunoprecipitation assay. The results showed that as compared with healthy individuals, the maturation marker CD40 in MDDCs, IL-17A expression from T cells, and IL-10 expression from MDDCs were significantly lower in gastric cancer patients. Blocking DC-SIGN, TLR2, and TLR4 could reverse H. pylori-associated IL-10 production. Activation of the p38 MAPK and NF-kB signaling pathways concomitant with decreased tri-methylated H3K9 and increased acetylated H3 accounted for the effect of H. pylori on IL-10 expression. Furthermore, upregulated IL-10 expression was significantly suppressed in H. pylori-pulsed MDDCs by histone acetyltransferase and methyltransferase inhibitors. Taken together, impaired DC function contributes to the less effective innate and adaptive immune responses against H. pylori seen in gastric cancer patients. H. pylori can regulate IL-10 production through Toll-like and DC-SIGN receptors, activates p-p38 MAPK signaling and the transcription factors NF-kB, and modulates histone modification

    Evaluation of Oral Antiretroviral Drugs in Mice With Metabolic and Neurologic Complications

    Antiretroviral (ART) drugs has previously been associated with lipodystrophic syndrome, metabolic consequences, and neuropsychiatric complications. ART drugs include three main classes of protease inhibitors (PIs), nucleoside analog reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs), and non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs). Our previous work demonstrated that a high risk of hyperlipidemia was observed in HIV-1-infected patients who received ART drugs in Taiwan. Patients receiving ART drugs containing either Abacavir/Lamivudine (Aba/Lam; NRTI/NRTI), Lamivudine/Zidovudine (Lam/Zido; NRTI/NRTI), or Lopinavir/Ritonavir (Lop/Rit; PI) have the highest risk of hyperlipidemia. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of Aba/Lam (NRTI/NRTI), Lam/Zido (NRTI/NRTI), and Lop/Rit (PI) on metabolic and neurologic functions in mice. Groups of C57BL/6 mice were administered Aba/Lam, Lam/Zido, or Lop/Rit, orally, once daily for a period of 4 weeks. The mice were then extensively tested for metabolic and neurologic parameters. In addition, the effect of Aba/Lam, Lam/Zido, and Lop/Rit on lipid metabolism was assessed in HepG2 hepatocytes and during the 3T3-L1 preadipocyte differentiation. Administration with Aba/Lam caused cognitive and motor impairments in mice, as well as their metabolic imbalances, including alterations in leptin serum levels. Administration with Lop/Rit also caused cognitive and motor impairments in mice, as well as their metabolic imbalances, including alterations in serum levels of total cholesterol, and HDL-c. Treatment of mice with Aba/Lam and Lop/Rit enhanced the lipid accumulation in the liver, and the decrease in AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) phosphorylation and/or its downstream target acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) protein expression. In HepG2 hepatocytes, Aba/Lam, Lam/Zido, and Lop/Rit also enhanced the lipid accumulation and decreased phosphorylated AMPK and ACC proteins. In 3T3-L1 pre-adipocyte differentiation, Aba/Lam and Lop/Rit reduced adipogenesis by decreasing expression of transcription factor CEBPb, implicating the lipodystrophic syndrome. Our results demonstrate that daily oral administration of Aba/Lam and Lop/Rit may produce cognitive, motor, and metabolic impairments in mice, regardless of HIV-1 infection

    Women with endometriosis have higher comorbidities: Analysis of domestic data in Taiwan

    AbstractEndometriosis, defined by the presence of viable extrauterine endometrial glands and stroma, can grow or bleed cyclically, and possesses characteristics including a destructive, invasive, and metastatic nature. Since endometriosis may result in pelvic inflammation, adhesion, chronic pain, and infertility, and can progress to biologically malignant tumors, it is a long-term major health issue in women of reproductive age. In this review, we analyze the Taiwan domestic research addressing associations between endometriosis and other diseases. Concerning malignant tumors, we identified four studies on the links between endometriosis and ovarian cancer, one on breast cancer, two on endometrial cancer, one on colorectal cancer, and one on other malignancies, as well as one on associations between endometriosis and irritable bowel syndrome, one on links with migraine headache, three on links with pelvic inflammatory diseases, four on links with infertility, four on links with obesity, four on links with chronic liver disease, four on links with rheumatoid arthritis, four on links with chronic renal disease, five on links with diabetes mellitus, and five on links with cardiovascular diseases (hypertension, hyperlipidemia, etc.). The data available to date support that women with endometriosis might be at risk of some chronic illnesses and certain malignancies, although we consider the evidence for some comorbidities to be of low quality, for example, the association between colon cancer and adenomyosis/endometriosis. We still believe that the risk of comorbidity might be higher in women with endometriosis than that we supposed before. More research is needed to determine whether women with endometriosis are really at risk of these comorbidities
