JVM-hosted languages: They talk the talk, but do they walk the walk?
The rapid adoption of non-Java JVM languages is impressive: major international corporations are staking critical parts of their software infrastructure on components built from languages such as
Scala and Clojure. However with the possible exception of Scala,
there has been little academic consideration and characterization
of these languages to date. In this paper, we examine four nonJava JVM languages and use exploratory data analysis techniques
to investigate differences in their dynamic behavior compared to
Java. We analyse a variety of programs and levels of behavior to
draw distinctions between the different programming languages.
We briefly discuss the implications of our findings for improving
the performance of JIT compilation and garbage collection on the
JVM platform
Investigating the impact of combining handwritten signature and keyboard keystroke dynamics for gender prediction
© 2019 IEEE. The use of soft-biometric data as an auxiliary tool on user identification is already well known. Gender, handorientation and emotional state are some examples which can be called soft-biometrics. These soft-biometric data can be predicted directly from the biometric templates. It is very common to find researches using physiological modalities for soft-biometric prediction, but behavioural biometric is often not well explored for this context. Among the behavioural biometric modalities, keystroke dynamics and handwriting signature have been widely explored for user identification, including some soft-biometric predictions. However, in these modalities, the soft-biometric prediction is usually done in an individual way. In order to fill this space, this study aims to investigate whether the combination of those two biometric modalities can impact the performance of a soft-biometric data, gender prediction. The main aim is to assess the impact of combining data from two different biometric sources in gender prediction. Our findings indicated gains in terms of performance for gender prediction when combining these two biometric modalities, when compared to the individual ones

Properties of the Bose glass phase in irradiated superconductors near the matching field
Structural and transport properties of interacting localized flux lines in
the Bose glass phase of irradiated superconductors are studied by means of
Monte Carlo simulations near the matching field B_Phi, where the densities of
vortices and columnar defects are equal. For a completely random columnar pin
distribution in the xy-plane transverse to the magnetic field, our results show
that the repulsive vortex interactions destroy the Mott insulator phase which
was predicted to occur at B = B_Phi. On the other hand, for ratios of the
penetration depth to average defect distance lambda/d <= 1, characteristic
remnants of the Mott insulator singularities remain visible in experimentally
accessible quantities as the magnetization, the bulk modulus, and the
magnetization relaxation, when B is varied near B_Phi. For spatially more
regular disorder, e.g., a nearly triangular defect distribution, we find that
the Mott insulator phase can survive up to considerably large interaction range

Controlled Growth, Patterning and Placement of Carbon Nanotube Thin Films
Controlled growth, patterning and placement of carbon nanotube (CNT) thin
films for electronic applications are demonstrated. The density of CNT films is
controlled by optimizing the feed gas composition as well as the concentration
of growth catalyst in a chemical vapor deposition process. Densities of CNTs
ranging from 0.02 CNTs/{\mu}m^2 to 1.29 CNTs/{\mu}m^2 are obtained. The
resulting pristine CNT thin films are then successfully patterned using either
pre-growth or post-growth techniques. By developing a layered photoresist
process that is compatible with ferric nitrate catalyst, significant
improvements over popular pre-growth patterning methods are obtained.
Limitations of traditional post-growth patterning methods are circumvented by
selective transfer printing of CNTs with either thermoplastic or metallic
stamps. Resulting as-grown patterns of CNT thin films have edge roughness (< 1
{\mu}m) and resolution (< 5 {\mu}m) comparable to standard photolithography.
Bottom gate CNT thin film devices are fabricated with field-effect mobilities
up to 20 cm^2/Vs and on/off ratios of the order of 10^3. The patterning and
transfer printing methods discussed here have a potential to be generalized to
include other nanomaterials in new device configurations
Synergistic therapeutic effect of arsenic trioxide and radiotherapy in BALB/C nude mice bearing nasopharyngeal carcinoma xenografts
It has been shown that arsenic trioxide (ATO) induced apoptosis in human nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells and inhibited the growth of nasopharyngeal carcinoma xenografts (NPCX) in nude mice. Aim: The present study was designed to determine whether ATO at the non-toxic dose level could potentiate the therapeutic effectiveness of radiation therapy in nasopharyngeal carcinoma, using a BALB/C nude mouse xenograft model. Methods: The mice bearing NPCX were treated with radiation alone (2, 4, and 6 Gy), ATO alone (4 mg/kg/day x 6 days), and ATO plus radiation at the same dosage levels. Time of tumor growth delay (defined as the time necessary for the tumor to grow four-fold of its initial volume after, compared with untreated tumors) and toxic effects were determined. Results: The low dose ATO alone has no pronounced effects on tumor growth delay compared to untreated control. However, compared with radiation alone, the combined regimen delayed the tumor growth by 2–10 days and had no significant toxic effects such as the liver function damage. Conclusions: Combination of ATO at non-toxic dose level and radiation has synergistic effects on tumor growth inhibition in vivo and is well tolerated.Установлено, что триоксид мышьяка (ТОМ) индуцирует апоптоз в клетках карциномы носоглотки человека и ингибирует
рост ксенографта карциномы носоглотки у атимических мышей. Цель работы — установить терапевтическую эффективность
радиотерапии в комбинации ТОМ в нетоксичной дозе мышам линии BALB/ с ксенографтом карциномы носоглотки.
Методы: животные с ксенографтом карциномы носоглотки получали либо только радиотерапию (2, 4 и 6 Гр) или ТОМ
(4 мг/кг/день в течение 6 дней), или их комбинацию в тех же режимах и дозах. Задержку роста опухоли определяли как
различие во времени, необходимом для достижения опухолью 4-кратного объема по сравнению с начальным объемом в
опытной группе versus такового в контрольной группе. Результаты: введение ТОМ в низкой дозе не оказывало выраженного
влияния на рост опухоли по сравнению с показателями в контрольной группе, а в комбинации с облучением приводило
к задержке роста опухоли на 2–12 сут по сравнению с показателями у животных, получавших только лучевую терапию
при отсутствии выраженных побочных эффектов. Выводы: комбинация ТОМ в нетоксической дозе и лучевой терапии
приводит к ингибированию роста опухоли in vivo и не вызывает побочных эффектов.

Vortex Solid-Liquid Transition in BiSrCaCuO with a High Density of Strong Pins
The introduction of a large density of columnar defects in %underdoped
BiSrCaCuO crystals does not, at sufficiently low
vortex densities, increase the irreversibility line beyond the first order
transition (FOT) field of pristine crystals. At such low fields, the flux line
wandering length behaves as in pristine
%BiSrCaCuO crystals. Next, vortex positional
correlations along the --axis in the vortex Bose glass at fields above the
FOT are smaller than in the low--field vortex solid. Third, the
Bose-glass-to-vortex liquid transition is signaled by a rapid decrease in
c-axis phase correlations. These observations are understood in terms of the

Resonant and anti-resonant frequency dependence of the effective parameters of metamaterials
We present a numerical study of the electromagnetic response of the
metamaterial elements that are usedto construct materials with negative
refractive index. For an array of split ring resonators (SRR) we find that the
resonant behavior of the effective magnetic permeability is accompanied by an
anti-resonant behavior of the effective permittivity. In addition, the
imaginary parts of the effective permittivity and permeability are opposite in
sign. We also observe an identical resonant versus anti-resonant frequency
dependence of the effective materials parameters for a periodic array of thin
metallic wires with cuts placed periodically along the length of the wire, with
roles of the permittivity and permeability reversed from the SRR case. We show
in a simple manner that the finite unit cell size is responsible for the
anti-resonant behavior
Poisson-Lie group of pseudodifferential symbols
We introduce a Lie bialgebra structure on the central extension of the Lie
algebra of differential operators on the line and the circle (with scalar or
matrix coefficients). This defines a Poisson--Lie structure on the dual group
of pseudodifferential symbols of an arbitrary real (or complex) order. We show
that the usual (second) Benney, KdV (or GL_n--Adler--Gelfand--Dickey) and KP
Poisson structures are naturally realized as restrictions of this Poisson
structure to submanifolds of this ``universal'' Poisson--Lie group.
Moreover, the reduced (=SL_n) versions of these manifolds (W_n-algebras in
physical terminology) can be viewed as subspaces of the quotient (or Poisson
reduction) of this Poisson--Lie group by the dressing action of the group of
functions.
Finally, we define an infinite set of functions in involution on the
Poisson--Lie group that give the standard families of Hamiltonians when
restricted to the submanifolds mentioned above. The Poisson structure and
Hamiltonians on the whole group interpolate between the Poisson structures and
Hamiltonians of Benney, KP and KdV flows. We also discuss the geometrical
meaning of W_\infty as a limit of Poisson algebras W_\epsilon as \epsilon goes

Superconducting Coherence and the Helicity Modulus in Vortex Line Models
We show how commonly used models for vortex lines in three dimensional
superconductors can be modified to include k=0 excitations. We construct a
formula for the k=0 helicity modulus in terms of fluctuations in the projected
area of vortex loops. This gives a convenient criterion for the presence of
superconducting coherence. We also present Monte Carlo simulations of a
continuum vortex line model for the melting of the Abrikosov vortex lattice in
