A Compromise between Neutrino Masses and Collider Signatures in the Type-II Seesaw Model
A natural extension of the standard gauge
model to accommodate massive neutrinos is to introduce one Higgs triplet and
three right-handed Majorana neutrinos, leading to a neutrino mass
matrix which contains three sub-matrices ,
and . We show that three light Majorana neutrinos (i.e., the mass
eigenstates of , and ) are exactly massless in this
model, if and only if
exactly holds. This no-go theorem implies that small but non-vanishing neutrino
masses may result from a significant but incomplete cancellation between
and terms in the Type-II
seesaw formula, provided three right-handed Majorana neutrinos are of TeV and experimentally detectable at the LHC. We propose three simple
Type-II seesaw scenarios with the flavor symmetry to
interpret the observed neutrino mass spectrum and neutrino mixing pattern. Such
a TeV-scale neutrino model can be tested in two complementary ways: (1)
searching for possible collider signatures of lepton number violation induced
by the right-handed Majorana neutrinos and doubly-charged Higgs particles; and
(2) searching for possible consequences of unitarity violation of the neutrino mixing matrix in the future long-baseline neutrino oscillation

Hardness characterisation of grey cast iron and its tribological performance in a contact lubricated with soybean oil
The effect of hardness of grey cast iron flat specimen on its wear and friction on the

The one

way analysis
of variance (ANOVA) was used to determine the significance of friction and wear
data with a 95% significance level.
The wear scars after the test were then characterised by
surface roughness and wear mechanism. The microstructure and elemental analysis we

reported. The average value of hardness was 210 HV with a large difference between minimum
(185 HV) and maximum (250 HV) values.
The friction and wear performance of grey cast iron
specimens with soybean oil varied with its hardness.
The specimens
with higher hardness gave
lower friction coefficient and greater wear resistance than the lower hardness specimens.
The
difference in coefficient of friction produced between high hardness specimens (COF = 0.122)
and low hardness specimens (COF = 0.140) wa
s 17%. In terms of mass loss, the low hardness

specimens (mass loss = 50.38 mg) and the high hardness specimens (mass loss = 12.90 mg)
produced a difference of 74%.
It is shown that, with soybean oil lubricant, the grey cast iron
specimen can produce wide
range of tribological data especially on mass loss due to its hardness
distribution. The influence of soybean oil lubrication in this work is less in improving the wear
resistance (about 7%), but greater for friction reduction (about 24%) compared to an un
lubricated
grey cast iron surface. The hardness of grey cast iron specimen is an important parameter that
needs to be specifically measured and controlled on the contact due to wide hardness distribution
of grey cast iron may produce variation in tribologi
cal data
An efficient and extensible approach for compressing phylogenetic trees
Biologists require new algorithms to efficiently compress and store their large collections of phylogenetic trees. TreeZip is a novel method for compressing phylogenetic trees. Recently, we extended our TreeZip algorithm to support branch lengths and show how it can be used to extract sets of trees of interest quickly. The key advantage of TreeZip over standard compression methods like 7zip is its ability to interpret and compress tree collections semantically, making it immune to branch rotations and allowing key operations (such calculating a consensus tree) to be performed quickly and without a loss of space savings. On unweighted phylogenetic trees, TreeZip is able to compress Newick files in excess of 98%. On weighted phylogenetic trees, TreeZip is able to compress a Newick file by at least 73%. TreeZip can be combined with 7zip with little overhead, allowing space savings in excess of 99 % (unweighted) and 92%(weighted). Unlike TreeZip, 7zip is not immune to branch rotations, and performs worse as the level of variability in the Newick string representation increases. Finally, since the TreeZip compressed text (TRZ) file contains all the semantic information in a collection of trees, we can easily filter and decompress a subset of trees of interest (such as the set of unique trees), or build the resulting consensus tree in a matter of seconds. We also show the ease of which set operations can be performed on TRZ files, at speeds quicker than those performed on Newick or 7zip compressed Newick files, and without loss of space savings. TreeZip is an efficient approach for compressing large collections of phylogenetic trees. The semantic and compact nature of the TRZ file allow it to be operated upon directly and quickly, without a need to decompress the original Newick file. We believe that TreeZip will be vital for compressing and archiving trees in the biological community.
Creating citizen-consumers? Public service reform and (un)willing selves
About the book: Postmodern theories heralded the "death of the subject", and thereby deeply contested our intuition that we are free and willing selves. In recent times, the (free) will has come under attack yet again. Findings from the neuro- and cognitive sciences claim the concept of will to be scientifically untenable, specifying that it is our brain rather than our 'self' which decides what we want to do. In spite of these challenges however, the willing self has come to take centre stage in our society: juridical and moral practices ascribing guilt, or the organization of everyday life attributing responsibilities, for instance, can hardly be understood without taking recourse to the willing subject.
In this vein, the authors address topics such as the genealogy of the concept of willing selves, the discourse on agency in neuroscience and sociology, the political debate on volition within neoliberal and neoconservative regimes, approaches toward novel forms of relational responsibility as well as moral evaluations in conceptualizing autonomy
Comparison of haematological parameters determined by the Sysmex KX - 2IN automated haematology analyzer and the manual counts
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>This study was designed to determine the correlation between heamatological parameters by Sysmex KX-21N automated hematology analyzer with the manual methods.</p> <p>Method</p> <p>Sixty (60) subjects were randomly selected from both apparently healthy subjects and those who have different blood disorders from the University of Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ituku-Ozalla, Enugu, Enugu State, Nigeria. Three (3)mls of venous blood sample was collected aseptically from each subject into tri-potassium ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid (K<sub>3</sub>EDTA) for the analysis of haematological parameters using the automated and the manual methods.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The blood film report by the manual method showed that 50% of the subjects were normocytic-normochromic while the other 50% revealed different abnormal blood pictures. Also, there were statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) in mean cell hemoglobin concentrations (MCHC) between the two methods. Similarly, the mean (S.E) values of hemoglobin, packed cell volume, platelet and total white cell counts demonstrated statistically significant difference (p < 0.001) and correlated positively when both methods were compared.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>From the present study, it can be concluded that the automated hematology analyzer readings correlated well with readings by the standard manual method, although the latter method gave additional diagnostic information on the blood pictures. While patients' care and laboratory operations could be optimized by using manual microscopic examination as a reflective substitute for automated methods, usage of automated method would ease our workload and save time for patients.</p
Relativistic Compression and Expansion of Experiential Time in the Left and Right Space
Time, space and numbers are closely linked in the physical world. However, the relativistic-like effects on time perception of spatial and magnitude factors remain poorly investigated. Here we wanted to investigate whether duration judgments of digit visual stimuli are biased depending on the side of space where the stimuli are presented and on the magnitude of the stimulus itself. Different groups of healthy subjects performed duration judgment tasks on various types of visual stimuli. In the first two experiments visual stimuli were constituted by digit pairs (1 and 9), presented in the centre of the screen or in the right and left space. In a third experiment visual stimuli were constituted by black circles. The duration of the reference stimulus was fixed at 300 ms. Subjects had to indicate the relative duration of the test stimulus compared with the reference one. The main results showed that, regardless of digit magnitude, duration of stimuli presented in the left hemispace is underestimated and that of stimuli presented in the right hemispace is overestimated. On the other hand, in midline position, duration judgments are affected by the numerical magnitude of the presented stimulus, with time underestimation of stimuli of low magnitude and time overestimation of stimuli of high magnitude. These results argue for the presence of strict interactions between space, time and magnitude representation on the human brain
Do people feel they belong? Socio‐political factors shaping the place attachment of Hong Kong citizens
Hong Kong citizens’ sense of belonging has gone through a period of fluctuation during the period of rapid socio‐political and legal change since the outbreak of the Anti‐Extradition Law Amendment Bill Movement in 2019. This study explored how multiple dimensions of the place attachment of Hong Kong citizens have been shaped by factors associated with these changes. Six socio‐political variables were incorporated into the three dimensions of the person–process–place (PPP) framework. Based on a representative survey of the local population (n = 768), we found that political inclination and identity were significantly associated with the sense of place, with citizens identifying as Chinese and aligning with the pro‐establishment camp showing higher levels of place attachment. Mobility was negatively associated with place attachment, whereas the correlation between attachment and perceptions of the law and legal system was positive. The study has implications for Hong Kong’s current socio‐political and institutional environment and for emigration. It also demonstrates the wider applicability of the PPP framework for identifying and clarifying the various predictors of different dimensions of place attachment
Natural images from the birthplace of the human eye
Here we introduce a database of calibrated natural images publicly available
through an easy-to-use web interface. Using a Nikon D70 digital SLR camera, we
acquired about 5000 six-megapixel images of Okavango Delta of Botswana, a
tropical savanna habitat similar to where the human eye is thought to have
evolved. Some sequences of images were captured unsystematically while
following a baboon troop, while others were designed to vary a single parameter
such as aperture, object distance, time of day or position on the horizon.
Images are available in the raw RGB format and in grayscale. Images are also
available in units relevant to the physiology of human cone photoreceptors,
where pixel values represent the expected number of photoisomerizations per
second for cones sensitive to long (L), medium (M) and short (S) wavelengths.

Rebleeding rate after interventional therapy directed by capsule endoscopy in patients with obscure gastrointestinal bleeding
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The precise role of capsule endoscopy in the diagnostic algorithm of obscure gastrointestinal bleeding has yet to be determined. Despite the higher diagnostic yield of capsule endoscopy, the actual impact on clinical outcome remains poorly defined. The aim of this study was to evaluate the follow-up results of patients with obscure gastrointestinal bleeding to determine which management strategies after capsule endoscopy reduced rebleeding.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>All patients in whom the cause of obscure gastrointestinal bleeding was investigated between May 2004 and March 2007 were studied retrospectively. We evaluated the clinical outcome of patients with obscure gastrointestinal bleeding after capsule endoscopy using the rebleeding rate as the primary outcome.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Seventy-seven patients with obscure gastrointestinal bleeding underwent capsule endoscopy. Capsule endoscopy identified clinically significant findings that were thought to be the sources of obscure gastrointestinal bleeding in 58.4% of the patients. The overall rebleeding rate was 36.4%. The rebleeding rate was significantly higher among patients with insignificant findings than among those with significant findings (<it>p </it>= 0.036). Among the patients in whom capsule endoscopy produced significant findings, the rebleeding rate of the patients who underwent therapeutic interventions was significantly lower than that in those who did not undergo intervention (9.5% vs 40.0%, <it>p </it>= 0.046).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Follow-up and further aggressive interventions are necessary for patients with obscure gastrointestinal bleeding and significant capsule endoscopy findings to reduce the chance of rebleeding.</p
