The Lax conjecture is true
In 1958 Lax conjectured that hyperbolic polynomials in three variables are
determinants of linear combinations of three symmetric matrices. This
conjecture is equivalent to a recent observation of Helton and Vinnikov.Comment: 7 pages, Proceedings to the AMS, to appear. Added background materia

Application of ERTS-1 imagery in mapping and managing soil and range resources in the Sand Hills region of Nebraska
Interpretations of imagery from the Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS-1) indicate that soil associations and attendant range sites can be identified on the basis of vegetation and topography using multi-temporal imagery. Optical density measurements of imagery from the visible red band of the multispectral scanner (MSS band 5) obtained during the growing season were related to field measurements of vegetative biomass, a factor that closely parallels range condition class on specific range sites. ERTS-1 imagery also permitted inventory and assessment of center-pivot irrigation systems in the Sand Hills region in relation to soil and topographic conditions and energy requirements
Bacillus subtilis regulatory protein GerE
GerE is the latest-acting of a series of factors which regulate gene expression in the mother cell during sporulation in Bacillus. The gene encoding GerE has been cloned from B. subtilis and overexpressed in Escherichia coli. Purified GerE has been crystallized by the hanging-drop vapour-diffusion method using polyethylene glycol as a precipitant. The small plate-like crystals belong to the monoclinic space group C2 and diffract beyond 2.2 Angstrom resolution with a synchrotron radiation X-ray source
Effective use of ERTS multisensor data in the Northern Great Plains
The author has identified the following significant results. ERTS imagery was used as a tool in the identification and refinement of soil association areas; to classify land use patterns between crop and fallow fields; to identify corn, soybeans, and oats; and to identify broad generalized range ecosystems. Various data handling techniques were developed and applied to accomplish these tasks. A map outlining soil associations and relative land values was completed on a base mosaic of ERTS imagery and is included as an appendix to the report
Viking orbiter stereo imaging catalog
The extremely long mission of the two Viking Orbiter spacecraft produced a wealth of photos of surface features. Many of these photos can be used to form stereo images allowing the student of Mars to examine a subject in three dimensional. This catalog is a technical guide to the use of stereo coverage within the complex Viking imaging data set
Geometric Phase, Hannay's Angle, and an Exact Action Variable
Canonical structure of a generalized time-periodic harmonic oscillator is
studied by finding the exact action variable (invariant). Hannay's angle is
defined if closed curves of constant action variables return to the same curves
in phase space after a time evolution. The condition for the existence of
Hannay's angle turns out to be identical to that for the existence of a
complete set of (quasi)periodic wave functions. Hannay's angle is calculated,
and it is shown that Berry's relation of semiclassical origin on geometric
phase and Hannay's angle is exact for the cases considered.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev. Lett. (revised version
Collaborative information sensemaking for multi-robot search and rescue
In this paper, we consider novel information sensemaking methods for search and rescue operations that combine principles of information fusion and collective intelligence in scalable solutions. We will elaborate on several approaches that originated in different areas of information integration, sensor data management, and multi-robot urban search and rescue missions
