Asteroid Cooling Rates Indicated by K-Feldspar Exsolution Textures in H4 Ordinary Chondrites
Undisturbed thermal metamorphism in ordinary chondrite (OC) asteroids, produced through the radioactive decay of 26Al, is expected to result in an onion-shell-like structure. In such a structure, the inner layers of the asteroid experience more extensive thermal metamorphism, as represented by higher petrologic type, than the exterior layers. Furthermore, cooling rates are expected to be slower for OCs of high petrologic type than those of low petrologic type. However, cooling rates determined using metallographic methods and pyroxene diffusion are inconsistent with onion-shell-style cooling and have resulted in new models. These models argue for the disruption of the asteroid after peak metamorphism followed by reaccretion into a rubble pile. Improved constraints on cooling rates would provide a better understanding of the timing and scale of disruptive events. Feldspar microtextures are another tool that can be used to determine asteroid cooling rates. In OC chondrules, plagioclase is present as either a primary phase, or a secondary phase forming from the crystallization of mesostasis glass through petrologic type 4, followed by chemical and textural equilibration. Potas-sium feldspar is observed in petrologic types 3.6-6, as either patches or lamellae exsolved from albite in a perthite texture, often near pores or fractures. Exsolution occurs most commonly, and most extensively, in petrologic type 4. Because the feldspar exsolution wavelength is related to the rate at which grains cooled from the solvus temperature, determined from the minerals bulk composition, the chondrite cooling rate can be measured from regions of exsolution. We have previously reported the perthite exsolution cooling rate of Avanhandava, an H4 chondrite, to be 1 C per 1-4 months over a temperature interval of 765-670 C. A peristerite exsolution texture was also present in the Na-rich lamellae for which we estimated a cooling rate of 1 C in 103-104 years from 570-540 C. Overall, the cooling rates determined from Avanhandava are consistent with pyroxene diffusion (fast cooling at high temperatures) and metallographic rates (slow cooling at low temperatures), hence with the rubble pile model of disruption and reaccretion. Here, we characterize feldspar microtextures in four additional H4 chondrites to test the consistency of feldspar cooling rates across a range of samples. The perimeter of large planar Voronoi cells: a double-stranded random walk
Let be the probability for a planar Poisson-Voronoi cell to have
exactly sides. We construct the asymptotic expansion of up to
terms that vanish as . We show that {\it two independent biased
random walks} executed by the polar angle determine the trajectory of the cell
perimeter. We find the limit distribution of (i) the angle between two
successive vertex vectors, and (ii) the one between two successive perimeter
segments. We obtain the probability law for the perimeter's long wavelength
deviations from circularity. We prove Lewis' law and show that it has

Lived experiences of everyday memory in adults with dyslexia: A thematic analysis
Dyslexia-related difficulties with memory are well documented under laboratory conditions and via self-report questionnaires. However, the voice of the individual with dyslexia regarding the lived experience of memory across different memory systems and different daily settings is currently lacking. To address this gap in the literature, semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with 12 adult female university students with dyslexia. Questions probed different memory systems and experiences across different settings, with interviewees also being asked about their use of technology to support their memory. Two overarching themes were identified in the subsequent thematic analysis. The theme of fallibility of memory had two sub-themes of i) a lack of trust and confidence in memory and ii) factors contributing to memory failure. The second theme, facilitators of memory, also consisted of two sub-themes, relating to i) a preference for traditional tools to support memory and ii) the use of digital tools to support memory: benefits and limitations. The current study gives insights into the rich and complex extended and distributed cognitive systems of adults with dyslexia. The implications of the findings for dyslexia theory, support in educational and work settings, and assistive technology development are considered
Microlensing of Broad Absorption Line Quasars: Polarization Variability
Roughly 10% of all quasars exhibit Broad Absorption Line (BAL) features which
appear to arise in material outflowing at high velocity from the active
galactic nucleus (AGN). The details of this outflow are, however, very poorly
constrained and the particular nature of the BAL material is essentially
unknown. Recently, new clues have become available through polarimetric studies
which have found that BAL troughs are more polarized than the quasar continuum
radiation. To explain these observations, models where the BAL material
outflows equatorially across the surface of the dusty torus have been
developed. In these models, however, several sources of the BAL polarization
are possible. Here, we demonstrate how polarimetric monitoring of
gravitationally lensed quasars, such as H 1413+117, during microlensing events
can not only distinguish between two currently popular models, but can also

Mind the Gap: Another look at the problem of the semantic gap in image retrieval
This paper attempts to review and characterise the problem of the semantic gap in image retrieval and the attempts being made to bridge it. In particular, we draw from our own experience in user queries, automatic annotation and ontological techniques. The first section of the paper describes a characterisation of the semantic gap as a hierarchy between the raw media and full semantic understanding of the media's content. The second section discusses real users' queries with respect to the semantic gap. The final sections of the paper describe our own experience in attempting to bridge the semantic gap. In particular we discuss our work on auto-annotation and semantic-space models of image retrieval in order to bridge the gap from the bottom up, and the use of ontologies, which capture more semantics than keyword object labels alone, as a technique for bridging the gap from the top down
High-efficiency AlGaAs-GaAs Cassegrainian concentrator cells
AlGaAs-GaAs heteroface space concentrator solar cells have been fabricated by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. AMO efficiencies as high as 21.1% have been observed both for p-n and np structures under concentration (90 to 100X) at 25 C. Both cell structures are characterized by high quantum efficiencies and their performances are close to those predicted by a realistic computer model. In agreement with the computer model, the n-p cell exhibits a higher short-circuit current density
Newton-Hooke spacetimes, Hpp-waves and the cosmological constant
We show explicitly how the Newton-Hooke groups act as symmetries of the
equations of motion of non-relativistic cosmological models with a cosmological
constant. We give the action on the associated non-relativistic spacetimes and
show how these may be obtained from a null reduction of 5-dimensional
homogeneous pp-wave Lorentzian spacetimes. This allows us to realize the
Newton-Hooke groups and their Bargmann type central extensions as subgroups of
the isometry groups of the pp-wave spacetimes. The extended Schrodinger type
conformal group is identified and its action on the equations of motion given.
The non-relativistic conformal symmetries also have applications to
time-dependent harmonic oscillators. Finally we comment on a possible
application to Gao's generalization of the matrix model.Comment: 21 page
Frobenius theorem and invariants for Hamiltonian systems
We apply Frobenius integrability theorem in the search of invariants for
one-dimensional Hamiltonian systems with a time-dependent potential. We obtain
several classes of potential functions for which Frobenius theorem assures the
existence of a two-dimensional foliation to which the motion is constrained. In
particular, we derive a new infinite class of potentials for which the motion
is assurately restricted to a two-dimensional foliation. In some cases,
Frobenius theorem allows the explicit construction of an associated invariant.
It is proven the inverse result that, if an invariant is known, then it always
can be furnished by Frobenius theorem
Sex differences in plasma clozapine and norclozapine concentrations in clinical practice and in relation to body mass index and plasma glucose concentrations: a retrospective survey
Background
Clozapine is widely prescribed and, although effective, can cause weight gain and dysglycemia. The dysmetabolic effects of clozapine are thought to be more prevalent in women with this gender on average attaining 17 % higher plasma clozapine concentrations than men.
Methods
We investigated the relationship between dose, body mass index (BMI), plasma glucose concentration, and plasma clozapine and N-desmethylclozapine (norclozapine) concentrations in 100 individuals with a severe enduring mental illness.
Results
Mean (10th/90th percentile) plasma clozapine concentrations were higher for women [0.49 (0.27–0.79) mg/L] compared with men [0.44 (0.26–0.70) mg/L] (F = 2.2; p = 0.035). There was no significant gender difference in the prescribed clozapine dose. BMI was significantly higher in women [mean (95 % CI) = 34.5 (26.0–45.3)] for females compared with 32.5 (25.2–41.0) for males. Overall, BMI increased by 0.7 kg/m 2 over a mean follow-up period of 210 days. A lower proportion, 41 % of women had a fasting blood glucose ≤6.0 mmol/L (<6.0 mmol/L is defined by the International Diabetes Federation as normal glucose handling), compared with 88 % of men (χ2 = 18.6, p < 0.0001).
Conclusions
We have shown that mean BMI and blood glucose concentrations are higher in women prescribed clozapine than in men. Women also tended to attain higher plasma clozapine concentrations than men. The higher BMI and blood glucose in women may relate to higher tissue exposure to clozapine, as a consequence of sex differences in drug metabolism
