The sky lancer: 417th Bomb Group
The Sky Lancers have established an enviable record in combat against the Japanese in the Southwest Pacific Theatre of Operations. We have advanced twenty-five hundred miles since debarking at Cape Sudest, New Guinea; we have delivered destruction to the enemy over every mile of it and part of our great task still lies ahead on the road to Tokyo. Our gains have not been made easily and the price has been paid in both men and equipment.
It is to our gallant comrades who made their last flight with our organization that The SKY LANCER is dedicated, for it was they who contributed so greatly to our success and to the ultimate peace we are to gain through their courageous efforts.

Road Dust Correlated with Decreased Reproduction of the Endangered Utah Shrub Hesperidanthus suffrutescens
Roads associated with energy development have fragmented much of the Uinta Basin, the Colorado Plateau in general, and other areas of western North America. Beyond reducing available habitat, spreading exotic species, and creating barriers to dispersal, unpaved roads also increase dust loads on plants and pollinators, which may reduce plant growth and reproduction. We studied the effects of an unpaved road on reproduction of an endangered Utah endemic shrub. We measured the size and reproductive output of 156 plants and the dust deposition in plots at increasing distances from the road. We also hand outcrossed 240 flowers from 80 plants to help determine if any reduced reproduction was due to pre- or postpollination mechanisms. Additionally, we experimentally dusted 3 leaves on 30 plants (n = 90) and measured stomatal conductance pre-dust and post-dust. We also dusted 3 flowers on 10 plants (n = 30) prior to hand pollination and measured fruit set. Generalized linear mixed models were used to examine the relationship between reproduction and dust deposition. When controlling for plant size and distance from the road, fruit set was negatively correlated with increasing levels of dust deposition (F1, 15 = 5.26, P = 0.036). The number of seeds per plant, mean plant seed weight, and the proportion of hand-pollinated flowers that set fruit were also negatively correlated with dust, although not significantly. Dusting significantly reduced stomatal conductance (F1, 58 = 87.56, P \u3c 0.001). Eighty percent of hand pollinated flowers (24 of 30) set fruit after dusting. These results demonstrate that road dust reduces H. suffrutescens reproduction, although the mechanisms are not clear. Although dust negatively affected physiological processes, hand-pollination results suggest that dust might be disrupting pollination. This study documents the effects of road dust on the reproduction of an endangered shrub in Utah\u27s Uinta Basin and highlights the need for further research into the effects of roads and dust on nearby plants
Direct Imaging in Reflected Light: Characterization of Older, Temperate Exoplanets With 30-m Telescopes
Direct detection, also known as direct imaging, is a method for discovering
and characterizing the atmospheres of planets at intermediate and wide
separations. It is the only means of obtaining spectra of non-transiting
exoplanets. Characterizing the atmospheres of planets in the <5 AU regime,
where RV surveys have revealed an abundance of other worlds, requires a
30-m-class aperture in combination with an advanced adaptive optics system,
coronagraph, and suite of spectrometers and imagers - this concept underlies
planned instruments for both TMT (the Planetary Systems Imager, or PSI) and the
GMT (GMagAO-X). These instruments could provide astrometry, photometry, and
spectroscopy of an unprecedented sample of rocky planets, ice giants, and gas
giants. For the first time habitable zone exoplanets will become accessible to
direct imaging, and these instruments have the potential to detect and
characterize the innermost regions of nearby M-dwarf planetary systems in
reflected light. High-resolution spectroscopy will not only illuminate the
physics and chemistry of exo-atmospheres, but may also probe rocky, temperate
worlds for signs of life in the form of atmospheric biomarkers (combinations of
water, oxygen and other molecular species). By completing the census of
non-transiting worlds at a range of separations from their host stars, these
instruments will provide the final pieces to the puzzle of planetary
demographics. This whitepaper explores the science goals of direct imaging on

The Impact of Accelerating Land-Use Change on the N-Cycle of Tropical Aquatic Ecosystems: Current Conditions and Projected Changes
Published data and analyses from temperate and tropical aquatic systems are used to summarize knowledge about the potential impact of land-use alteration on the nitrogen biogeochemistry of tropical aquatic ecosystems, identify important patterns and recommend key needs for research. The tropical N-cycle is traced from pre-disturbance conditions through the phases of disturbance, highlighting major differences between tropical and temperate systems that might influence development strategies in the tropics. Analyses suggest that tropical freshwaters are more frequently N-limited than temperate zones, while tropical marine systems may show more frequent P limitation. These analyses indicate that disturbances to pristine tropical lands will lead to greatly increased primary production in freshwaters and large changes in tropical freshwater communities. Increased freshwater nutrient flux will also lead to an expansion of the high production, N- and light-limited zones around river deltas, a switch from P- to N-limitation in calcareous marine systems, with large changes in the community composition of fragile mangrove and reef systems. Key information gaps are highlighted, including data on mechanisms of nutrient transport and atmospheric deposition in the tropics, nutrient and material retention capacities of tropical impoundments, and N/P coupling and stoichiometric impacts of nutrient supplies on tropical aquatic communities. The current base of biogeochemical data suggests that alterations in the N-cycle will have greater impacts on tropical aquatic ecosystems than those already observed in the temperate zone

This article is a study of a La Follette’s Autobiography, the autobiography of the leading Wisconsin progressive Robert M. La Follette, which was published serially in 1911 and, in book form, in 1913. Rather than focusing, as have other historians, on which parts of La Follette’s account are accurate and can therefore be trusted, it explains instead why and how this major autobiography was conceived and written. The article shows that the autobiography was the product of a sustained, complex, and often fraught series of collaborations among La Follette’s family, friends, and political allies, and in the process illuminates the importance of affective ties as well as political ambition and commitment in bringing the project to fruition.
