    Lewisian quidditism, humility, and diffidence

    In ‘Ramseyan Humility’ Lewis presents the Permutation Argument for quidditism. As he presents it the argument is simple enough, but once one digs beneath its surface, and attempts to understand it in strictly Lewisian terms, difficulties arise. The fundamental difficulty is that, as he presents it, the argument only seems to be sound if one rejects views that Lewis explicitly holds. One aim of this paper is to clarify the argument to show that one can make sense of it in strictly Lewisian terms. In so doing I clarify Lewis’s view, clearly lay out the commitments that Lewis has, and define quidditism in strictly Lewisian terms. However, I also have a secondary aim. Lewis accepts that quidditism entails a form of scepticism, that he calls ‘Humility’. However, by an extension of the permutation argument I show that quidditism entails a form of scepticism, that I call ‘Diffidence’, that is far more wide-reaching than Humility

That request was contained in a letter dated November 19, 1985, from Ronald A. Pearlman, the Assistant Secretary (Tax Policy), to Hugh Calkins, then Section Chair.\u27 After receiving individual comment papers on the subject from members of the Section\u27s Committee on Estate and Gift Taxes, Mr. Calkins, on April 14, 1986, created this Task Force and asked it to prepare a more fundamental response

    Observational Results of a Multi-Telescope Campaign in Search of Interstellar Urea [(NH2_2)2_2CO]

    In this paper, we present the results of an observational search for gas phase urea [(NH2_2)2_2CO] observed towards the Sgr B2(N-LMH) region. We show data covering urea transitions from \sim100 GHz to 250 GHz from five different observational facilities: BIMA, CARMA, the NRAO 12 m telescope, the IRAM 30 m telescope, and SEST. The results show that the features ascribed to urea can be reproduced across the entire observed bandwidth and all facilities by best fit column density, temperature, and source size parameters which vary by less than a factor of 2 between observations merely by adjusting for telescope-specific parameters. Interferometric observations show that the emission arising from these transitions is cospatial and compact, consistent with the derived source sizes and emission from a single species. Despite this evidence, the spectral complexity, both of (NH2_2)2_2CO and of Sgr B2(N), makes the definitive identification of this molecule challenging.     3.6 and 4.5 μ\mum Spitzer{\it Spitzer} Phase Curves of the Highly-Irradiated Hot Jupiters WASP-19b and HAT-P-7b

    We analyze full-orbit phase curve observations of the transiting hot Jupiters WASP-19b and HAT-P-7b at 3.6 and 4.5 μ\mum obtained using the Spitzer Space Telescope. For WASP-19b, we measure secondary eclipse depths of 0.485%±0.024%0.485\%\pm 0.024\% and 0.584%±0.029%0.584\%\pm 0.029\% at 3.6 and 4.5 μ\mum, which are consistent with a single blackbody with effective temperature 2372±602372 \pm 60 K. The measured 3.6 and 4.5 μ\mum secondary eclipse depths for HAT-P-7b are 0.156%±0.009%0.156\%\pm 0.009\% and 0.190%±0.006%0.190\%\pm 0.006\%, which are well-described by a single blackbody with effective temperature 2667±572667\pm 57 K. Comparing the phase curves to the predictions of one-dimensional and three-dimensional atmospheric models, we find that WASP-19b's dayside emission is consistent with a model atmosphere with no dayside thermal inversion and moderately efficient day-night circulation. We also detect an eastward-shifted hotspot, suggesting the presence of a superrotating equatorial jet. In contrast, HAT-P-7b's dayside emission suggests a dayside thermal inversion and relatively inefficient day-night circulation; no hotspot shift is detected. For both planets, these same models do not agree with the measured nightside emission. The discrepancies in the model-data comparisons for WASP-19b might be explained by high-altitude silicate clouds on the nightside and/or high atmospheric metallicity, while the very low 3.6 μ\mum nightside planetary brightness for HAT-P-7b may be indicative of an enhanced global C/O ratio. We compute Bond albedos of 0 (<0.08<0.08 at 1σ1\sigma) and 0.38±0.060.38\pm 0.06 for WASP-19b and HAT-P-7b, respectively. In the context of other planets with thermal phase curve measurements, we show that WASP-19b and HAT-P-7b fit the general trend of decreasing day-night heat recirculation with increasing irradiation.Comment: 22 pages, 29 figures, accepted by Ap

    Mitochondrial DNA Manipulations Affect Tau Oligomerization

    Background:Mitochondrial dysfunction and tau aggregation occur in Alzheimer’s disease (AD), and exposing cells or rodents to mitochondrial toxins alters their tau. Objective:To further explore how mitochondria influence tau, we measured tau oligomer levels in human neuronal SH-SY5Y cells with different mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) manipulations. Methods:Specifically, we analyzed cells undergoing ethidium bromide-induced acute mtDNA depletion, ρ0 cells with chronic mtDNA depletion, and cytoplasmic hybrid (cybrid) cell lines containing mtDNA from AD subjects. Results:We found cytochrome oxidase activity was particularly sensitive to acute mtDNA depletion, evidence of metabolic re-programming in the ρ0 cells, and a relatively reduced mtDNA content in cybrids generated through AD subject mitochondrial transfer. In each case tau oligomer levels increased, and acutely depleted and AD cybrid cells also showed a monomer to oligomer shift. Conclusion:We conclude a cell’s mtDNA affects tau oligomerization. Overlapping tau changes across three mtDNA-manipulated models establishes the reproducibility of the phenomenon, and its presence in AD cybrids supports its AD-relevance
