    Network growth models and genetic regulatory networks

    We study a class of growth algorithms for directed graphs that are candidate models for the evolution of genetic regulatory networks. The algorithms involve partial duplication of nodes and their links, together with innovation of new links, allowing for the possibility that input and output links from a newly created node may have different probabilities of survival. We find some counterintuitive trends as parameters are varied, including the broadening of indegree distribution when the probability for retaining input links is decreased. We also find that both the scaling of transcription factors with genome size and the measured degree distributions for genes in yeast can be reproduced by the growth algorithm if and only if a special seed is used to initiate the process.Comment: 8 pages with 7 eps figures; uses revtex4.     On the Robustness of NK-Kauffman Networks Against Changes in their Connections and Boolean Functions

    NK-Kauffman networks {\cal L}^N_K are a subset of the Boolean functions on N Boolean variables to themselves, \Lambda_N = {\xi: \IZ_2^N \to \IZ_2^N}. To each NK-Kauffman network it is possible to assign a unique Boolean function on N variables through the function \Psi: {\cal L}^N_K \to \Lambda_N. The probability {\cal P}_K that \Psi (f) = \Psi (f'), when f' is obtained through f by a change of one of its K-Boolean functions (b_K: \IZ_2^K \to \IZ_2), and/or connections; is calculated. The leading term of the asymptotic expansion of {\cal P}_K, for N \gg 1, turns out to depend on: the probability to extract the tautology and contradiction Boolean functions, and in the average value of the distribution of probability of the Boolean functions; the other terms decay as {\cal O} (1 / N). In order to accomplish this, a classification of the Boolean functions in terms of what I have called their irreducible degree of connectivity is established.     I discuss ideal and interacting quantum gases obeying general fractional exclusion statistics. For systems with constant density of single-particle states, described in the mean field approximation, the entropy depends neither on the microscopic exclusion statistics, nor on the interaction. Such systems are called {\em thermodynamically equivalent} and I show that the microscopic reason for this equivalence is a one-to-one correspondence between the excited states of these systems. This provides a method, different from the bosonisation technique, to transform between systems of different exclusion statistics. In the last section the macroscopic aspects of this method are discussed. In Appendix A I calculate the fluctuation of the ground state population of a condensed Bose gas in grandcanonical ensemble and mean field approximation, while in Appendix B I show a situation where although the system exhibits fractional exclusion properties on microscopic energy intervals, a rigorous calculation of the population of single particle states reveals a condensation phenomenon. This also implies a malfunction of the usual and simplified calculation technique of the most probable statistical distributions.Comment: About 14 journal pages, with 1 figure.     Sensation Seeking and Perceived Need for Structure Moderate Soldiers’ Well-Being Before and After Operational Deployment

    This study examined associations between sensation seeking and perceived need for structure, and changes in reported well-being among deployed soldiers. Participants (n = 167) were assessed before and after a six-month deployment to south Afghanistan. Results indicated that although well-being declined in the soldier sample as a whole following deployment, the degree of decrease was significantly different among soldiers with different personality profiles. Differences were moderated by soldiers’ level of sensation seeking and perceived need for structure. Results are discussed in terms of a person-environment fit theory in the context of preparation and rehabilitation of deployed military personnel

    The Number of Different Binary Functions Generated by NK-Kauffman Networks and the Emergence of Genetic Robustness

    We determine the average number ϑ(N,K) \vartheta (N, K) , of \textit{NK}-Kauffman networks that give rise to the same binary function. We show that, for N1 N \gg 1 , there exists a connectivity critical value Kc K_c such that ϑ(N,K)eϕN \vartheta(N,K) \approx e^{\phi N} (ϕ>0 \phi > 0 ) for K<Kc K < K_c and ϑ(N,K)1\vartheta(N,K) \approx 1 for K>Kc K > K_c . We find that Kc K_c is not a constant, but scales very slowly with N N , as Kclog2log2(2N/ln2) K_c \approx \log_2 \log_2 (2N / \ln 2) . The problem of genetic robustness emerges as a statistical property of the ensemble of \textit{NK}-Kauffman networks and impose tight constraints in the average number of epistatic interactions that the genotype-phenotype map can have.Comment: 4 figures 18 page

    The region of small transverse momentum in q qbar- and gg-initiated processes must be studied in the framework of resummation to account for the large, logarithmically-enhanced contributions to physical observables. In this paper, we will calculate the fixed order next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative total and differential cross-sections for both a Standard Model (SM) scalar Higgs boson and the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model's (MSSM) pseudoscalar Higgs boson in the Heavy Quark Effective Theory (HQET) where the mass of the top quark is taken to be infinite.     Social Category Diversity Promotes Premeeting Elaboration: The Role of Relationship Focus

    A purported downside of social category diversity is decreased relationship focus (i.e., one’s focus on establishing a positive social bond with a coworker). However, we argue that this lack of relationship focus serves as a central mechanism that improves information processing even prior to interaction and, ultimately, decision-making performance in diverse settings. We introduce the construct of premeeting elaboration (i.e., the extent to which individuals consider their own and others’ perspectives in the anticipation of an interaction) and explore its link with social category diversity and relationship focus. Experiments 1 and 2 demonstrate that when disagreement occurs, social category diversity increases premeeting elaboration, with relationship focus as a central causal mechanism. Experiment 3 shows that premeeting elaboration has important implications for performance: disagreeing dyads with social category diversity elaborate more prior to meeting and, as a result, perform better on a decision-making task than those with social category homogeneity. We discuss the value of studying early-stage interaction and propose a reconsideration of the “downside” of social category diversity.Kellogg School of Managemen
