    Effects of Control Stick Parameters on Human Controller Response

    A fixed base laboratory tracking study was conducted to determine the effects of stick displacement and stick force characteristics on human tracking performance. Three different levels of control stick force/displacement characteristics and stick electrical gain were varied to observe their influence on RMS (Root Mean Square) tracking error and RMS control activity (stick output). The results indicated that both RMS tracking error and RMS control activity were influenced by the three different levels of control stick force/displacement characteristics and stick electrical gain. The human neuromotor time constant was affected by the electrical control gain of the stick while the spring stiffness of the stick influenced the time delay characteristics of the human response behavior

    Acoustoelectric pumping through a ballistic point contact in the presence of magnetic fields

    The acoustoelectric current, J, induced in a ballistic point contact (PC) by a surface acoustic wave is calculated in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field, B. It is found that the dependence of the current on the Fermi energy in the terminals is strongly correlated with that of the PC conductance: J is small at the conductance plateaus, and is large at the steps. Like the conductance, the acoustoelectric current has the same functional behavior as in the absence of the field, but with renormalized energy scales, which depend on the strength of the magnetic field, | B|.Comment: 7 page

    Laser space rendezvous and docking system study continuation

    Investigations were made of a configuration for a spaceborne laser radar (ladar) to meet the requirements for rendezvous and docking with a cooperative object in synchronous orbit. An analysis was completed of laser phase locking techniques, while experimental verification was made of pulse repetition frequency and resonant scanning control loops. Data measurements on a satellite mock-up were also made. The investigation supports the original contention that a rendezvous and docking ladar can be configured to offer a cost effective and reliable solution to envisioned space missions

    The Language of Involuntary Mental Hospitalization: A Study in Sound and Fury

    Involuntary civil commitment is the business of hospitalizing and treating, without their consent, persons whom a court, with the aid of professional diagnosticians, determines to be psychologically disturbed or mentally ill. The purpose of the present study will be to demonstrate that the medical diagnoses of mental illness which justify involuntary civil commitment are achieved on the basis of at least unreliable and at worst invalid sets of diagnostic categories and assessments. For the purpose of determining the reliability of these diagnostic findings, the author selected a representative sample of the involuntary mental hospitalization proceedings of the Wayne County Probate Court, which serves the metropolitan Detroit area. Before setting forth the procedure and results, however, it is necessary to examine briefly the statutory basis for involuntary mental hospitalization

    Flight software development for the isothermal dendritic growth experiment

    The Isothermal Dendritic Growth Experiment (IDGE) is a microgravity materials science experiment scheduled to fly in the cargo bay of the shuttle on the United States Microgravity Payload (USMP) carrier. The experiment will be operated by real-time control software which will not only monitor and control onboard experiment hardware, but will also communicate, via downlink data and uplink commands, with the Payload Operations Control Center (POCC) at NASA George C. Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC). The software development approach being used to implement this system began with software functional requirements specification. This was accomplished using the Yourdon/DeMarco methodology as supplemented by the Ward/Mellor real-time extensions. The requirements specification in combination with software prototyping was then used to generate a detailed design consisting of structure charts, module prologues, and Program Design Language (PDL) specifications. This detailed design will next be used to code the software, followed finally by testing against the functional requirements. The result will be a modular real-time control software system with traceability through every phase of the development process

    The absorption spectrum around nu=1: evidence for a small size Skyrmion

    We measure the absorption spectrum of a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) in a GaAs quantum well in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. We focus on the absorption spectrum into the lowest Landau Level around nu=1. We find that the spectrum consists of bound electron-hole complexes, trion and exciton like. We show that their oscillator strength is a powerful probe of the 2DES spatial correlations. We find that near nu=1 the 2DES ground state consists of Skyrmions of small size (a few magnetic lengths).Comment: To be published in Phys Rev Lett.
