Distinguishing Marks of Simply-connected Universes
A statistical quantity suitable for distinguishing simply-connected
Robertson-Walker (RW) universes is introduced, and its explicit expressions for
the three possible classes of simply-connected RW universes with an uniform
distribution of matter are determined. Graphs of the distinguishing mark for
each class of RW universes are presented and analyzed. There sprout from our
results an improvement on the procedure to extract the topological signature of
multiply-connected RW universes, and a refined understanding of that
topological signature of these universes studied in previous works.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, LaTeX2e. To appear in Int. J. Mod. Phys. D

Dynamics of Black Hole Pairs II: Spherical Orbits and the Homoclinic Limit of Zoom-Whirliness
Spinning black hole pairs exhibit a range of complicated dynamical behaviors.
An interest in eccentric and zoom-whirl orbits has ironically inspired the
focus of this paper: the constant radius orbits. When black hole spins are
misaligned, the constant radius orbits are not circles but rather lie on the
surface of a sphere and have acquired the name "spherical orbits". The
spherical orbits are significant as they energetically frame the distribution
of all orbits. In addition, each unstable spherical orbit is asymptotically
approached by an orbit that whirls an infinite number of times, known as a
homoclinic orbit. A homoclinic trajectory is an infinite whirl limit of the
zoom-whirl spectrum and has a further significance as the separatrix between
inspiral and plunge for eccentric orbits. We work in the context of two
spinning black holes of comparable mass as described in the 3PN Hamiltonian
with spin-orbit coupling included. As such, the results could provide a testing
ground of the accuracy of the PN expansion. Further, the spherical orbits could
provide useful initial data for numerical relativity. Finally, we comment that
the spinning black hole pairs should give way to chaos around the homoclinic
orbit when spin-spin coupling is incorporated.Comment: 16 pages, several figure
Predictions for Impurity-Induced Tc Suppression in the High-Temperature Superconductors
We address the question of whether anisotropic superconductivity is
compatible with the evidently weak sensitivity of the critical temperature Tc
to sample quality in the high-Tc copper oxides. We examine this issue
quantitatively by solving the strong-coupling Eliashberg equations numerically
as well as analytically for s-wave impurity scattering within the second Born
approximation. For pairing interactions with a characteristically low energy
scale, we find an approximately universal dependence of the d-wave
superconducting transition temperature on the planar residual resistivity which
is independent of the details of the microscopic pairing. These results, in
conjunction with future systematic experiments, should help elucidate the
symmetry of the order parameter in the cuprates.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures upon request, revtex version
Collision integrals and high temperature transport properties for N-N, O-O, and N-O
Accurate collision integrals are reported for the interactions of N(4 S 0) + N(4 S 0), O(3 P), and N(4 S 0) + O(3 P). These are computed from a semiclassical formulation of the scattering using the best available representations of all of the potential energy curves needed to describe the collisions. Experimental RKR curves and other accurate measured data are used where available; the results of accurate ab initio electronic structure calculations are used to determine the remaining potential curves. The high-lying states are found to give the largest contributions to the collision cross sections. The nine collision integrals, needed to determine transport properties to second order, are tabulated for translational temperatures in the range 250 K to 100,000 K. These results are intended to reduce the uncertainty in future predictions of the transport properties of nonequilibrium air, particularly at high temperatures. The viscosity, thermal conductivity, diffusion coefficient, and thermal diffusion factor for a gas composed of nitrogen and oxygen atoms in thermal equilibrium are calculated. It was found that the second order contribution to the transport properties is small. Graphs of these transport properties for various mixture ratios are presented for temperatures in the range 5000 to 15000 K
Blind Normalization of Speech From Different Channels
We show how to construct a channel-independent representation of speech that
has propagated through a noisy reverberant channel. This is done by blindly
rescaling the cepstral time series by a non-linear function, with the form of
this scale function being determined by previously encountered cepstra from
that channel. The rescaled form of the time series is an invariant property of
it in the following sense: it is unaffected if the time series is transformed
by any time-independent invertible distortion. Because a linear channel with
stationary noise and impulse response transforms cepstra in this way, the new
technique can be used to remove the channel dependence of a cepstral time
series. In experiments, the method achieved greater channel-independence than
cepstral mean normalization, and it was comparable to the combination of
cepstral mean normalization and spectral subtraction, despite the fact that no
measurements of channel noise or reverberations were required (unlike spectral
subtraction).Comment: 25 pages, 7 figure
Signature for the Shape of the Universe
If the universe has a nontrivial shape (topology) the sky may show multiple
correlated images of cosmic objects. These correlations can be couched in terms
of distance correlations. We propose a statistical quantity which can be used
to reveal the topological signature of any Robertson-Walker (RW) spacetime with
nontrivial topology. We also show through computer-aided simulations how one
can extract the topological signatures of flat, elliptic, and hyperbolic RW
universes with nontrivial topology.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, LaTeX2e. This paper is a direct ancestor of

Kinetic Inflation in Stringy and Other Cosmologies
An inflationary epoch driven by the kinetic energy density in a dynamical
Planck mass is studied. In the conformally related Einstein frame it is easiest
to see the demands of successful inflation cannot be satisfied by kinetic
inflation alone. Viewed in the original Jordan-Brans-Dicke frame, the obstacle
is manifest as a kind of graceful exit problem and/or a kind of flatness
problem. These arguments indicate the weakness of only the simplest
formulation. {}From them can be gleaned directions toward successful kinetic
inflation.Comment: 26 pages, LaTeX, CITA-94-2

Impacts of variable renewable energy on wholesale markets and generating assets in the United States: A review of expectations and evidence
We synthesize available literature, data, and analysis on the degree to which growth in variable renewable energy (VRE) has impacted or might in the future impact bulk power system assets, pricing, and costs in the United States. Most studies of future scenarios indicate that VRE reduces wholesale energy prices and capacity factors of thermal generators. Traditional baseload generators are more exposed to these changing market conditions than low-capital cost and more flexible intermediate and peak-load generators. From analysis of historical data we find that VRE is already influencing the bulk power market through changes in temporal and geographic patterns areas with higher levels of VRE. The most significant observed impacts have concentrated in areas with significant VRE and/or nuclear generation along with limited transmission, with negative pricing also often occurring during periods with lower system-wide load. So far, however, VRE, has had a relatively modest impact on historical average annual wholesale prices across entire market regions, at least in comparison to other drivers. The reduction of natural gas prices is the primary contributor to the decline in wholesale prices since 2008. Similarly, VRE impacts on thermal plant retirements have been limited and there is little relationship between the location of recent retirements and VRE penetration levels. Although impacts on wholesale prices have been modest so far, impacts of VRE on the electricity market will be more significant under higher VRE penetrations
