    All-optical periodic code matching by a single-shot frequency-domain cross-correlation measurement

    Optical single-short measurement of the cross-correlation function between periodic sequences is demonstrated. The sequences are encoded into the broadband ultrashort phase-shaped pulses which are mixed in the nonlinear medium with additional amplitude-shaped narrowband pulse. The spectrum of the resulted four wave mixing signal is measured to provide the cross-correlation function. The high contrast between the values of cross-correlation and auto-correlation (the latter includes also the information of the sequence period) has potential to be employed in the optical implementation of CDMA communication protocol

    Photoinduced Electron Transfer in Ruthenium Bipyridyl Complexes: Evidence for the Existence of a Cage with Molecular Oxygen

    Ruthenium complexes with three bipyridyl ligands, one of which is modified by attaching one or two hydroxamic acids groups (Ru-1 and Ru-2, respectively), were synthesized. Using EPR spectroscopy, we have found that photoexcitation leads to formation of nitroxyl radicals. The nitroxyl radical concentration in Ru-2 increased dramatically in the presence of spin traps DMPO (5,5‘-dimethyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide) and PBN (N-tert-butyl-α-phenylnitrone) characterized by strong affinity to superoxide radicals. We have attributed this behavior to the formation of a cage complex between Ru-2 and the superoxide radical. This paper concerns the study of cages formed between ruthenium complexes and molecular oxygen and the effect of functional groups attached to modified bipyridyl ligands on cage formation. The complex between Ru-2 and O_2 was formed in the ground state, probably with participation of the hydroxamic acid groups. The equilibrium constant of this complex was determined by EPR as K_(eq) ∼ 3 M^(-1). The formation of the Ru-2−O_2 complex is supported by the temperature-dependent rate of appearance of the EPR signal in the presence of PBN. Additional evidence comes from observation of paramagnetic shifts of the peaks in the 1H NMR spectrum of specific aromatic protons in the substituted bipyridyl ring upon exposure to O_2. Similar shifts were observed in the spectrum of Os-2, with osmium replacing ruthenium. Model compounds with functional groups that replace the hydroxamic acid or compounds without the metal center, but with the two hydroxamic acids, were synthesized. No shifts in the ^1H NMR spectra of these derivatives were observed in the presence of O_2. These results lead to the conclusion that both metal ions, Ru(II) or Os(II), and hydroxamic acid groups are essential components for the formation of the oxygen cage

    NIR Femtosecond Control of Resonance-Mediated Generation of Coherent Broadband UV Emission

    We use shaped near-infrared (NIR) pulses to control the generation of coherent broadband ultraviolet (UV) radiation in an atomic resonance-mediated (2+1) three-photon excitation. Experimental and theoretical results are presented for phase controlling the total emitted UV yield in atomic sodium (Na). Based on our confirmed understanding, we present a new simple scheme for producing shaped femtosecond pulses in the UV/VUV spectral range using the control over atomic resonance-mediated generation of third (or higher order) harmonic.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figure

    Negotiating agency: Amish and ultra-Orthodox women’s responses to the Internet

    This study explores how women in two devout religious communities cope with the Internet and its apparent incompatibility with their communities’ values and practices. Questionnaires containing both closed and open-ended questions were completed by 82 participants, approximately half from each community. While their discourses included similar framings of danger and threat, the two groups manifested different patterns of Internet use (and nonuse). Rigorous adherence to religious dictates is greatly admired in these communities, and the women take pride in manipulating their status in them. Their agency is reflected in how they negotiate the tension inherent in their roles as both gatekeepers and agents-of-change, which are analyzed as valuable currencies in their cultural and religious markets

    Beyond Kinetic Relations

    We introduce the concept of kinetic equations representing a natural extension of the more conventional notion of a kinetic relation. Algebraic kinetic relations, widely used to model dynamics of dislocations, cracks and phase boundaries, link the instantaneous value of the velocity of a defect with an instantaneous value of the driving force. The new approach generalizes kinetic relations by implying a relation between the velocity and the driving force which is nonlocal in time. To make this relations explicit one needs to integrate the system of kinetic equations. We illustrate the difference between kinetic relation and kinetic equations by working out in full detail a prototypical model of an overdamped defect in a one-dimensional discrete lattice. We show that the minimal nonlocal kinetic description containing now an internal time scale is furnished by a system of two ordinary differential equations coupling the spatial location of defect with another internal parameter that describes configuration of the core region.Comment: Revised version, 33 pages, 9 figure

    The Medium Is the Danger: Discourse about Television among Amish and Ultra-Orthodox (Haredi) Women

    This study shows how Old Order Amish and ultra-Orthodox women’s discourse about television can help develop a better understanding of the creation, construction, and strengthening of limits and boundaries separating enclave cultures from the world. Based on questionnaires containing both closed- and open-ended questions completed by 82 participants, approximately half from each community, I argue that both communities can be understood as interpretive communities that negatively interpret not only television content, like other religious communities, but also the medium itself. Their various negative interpretive strategies is discussed and the article shows how they are part of an “us-versus-them” attitude created to mark the boundaries and walls that enclave cultures build around themselves. The comparison between the two communities found only a few small differences but one marked similarity: The communities perceive avoidance of a tool for communication, in this case television, as part of the communities’ sharing, participation, and common culture

    The meaning and measurement of implementation climate

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Climate has a long history in organizational studies, but few theoretical models integrate the complex effects of climate during innovation implementation. In 1996, a theoretical model was proposed that organizations could develop a positive climate for implementation by making use of various policies and practices that promote organizational members' means, motives, and opportunities for innovation use. The model proposes that implementation climate--or the extent to which organizational members perceive that innovation use is expected, supported, and rewarded--is positively associated with implementation effectiveness. The implementation climate construct holds significant promise for advancing scientific knowledge about the organizational determinants of innovation implementation. However, the construct has not received sufficient scholarly attention, despite numerous citations in the scientific literature. In this article, we clarify the meaning of implementation climate, discuss several measurement issues, and propose guidelines for empirical study.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>Implementation climate differs from constructs such as organizational climate, culture, or context in two important respects: first, it has a strategic focus (implementation), and second, it is innovation-specific. Measuring implementation climate is challenging because the construct operates at the organizational level, but requires the collection of multi-dimensional perceptual data from many expected innovation users within an organization. In order to avoid problems with construct validity, assessments of within-group agreement of implementation climate measures must be carefully considered. Implementation climate implies a high degree of within-group agreement in climate perceptions. However, researchers might find it useful to distinguish implementation climate level (the average of implementation climate perceptions) from implementation climate strength (the variability of implementation climate perceptions). It is important to recognize that the implementation climate construct applies most readily to innovations that require collective, coordinated behavior change by many organizational members both for successful implementation and for realization of anticipated benefits. For innovations that do not possess these attributes, individual-level theories of behavior change could be more useful in explaining implementation effectiveness.</p> <p>Summary</p> <p>This construct has considerable value in implementation science, however, further debate and development is necessary to refine and distinguish the construct for empirical use.</p
