    Profitability and risk evaluation of novel perennial pasture systems for livestock producers in the high rainfall zone: Context, Approach and Preliminary Results

    The decision to invest in pasture improvement raises various questions for the livestock grazier, with the most pertinent being about the potential returns and risks. In the high rainfall zone of south-west Victoria, researchers have trialled novel perennial pasture systems with the aim of substantially increasing on-farm profits whilst simultaneously improving environmental outcomes. Results from the Hamilton EverGrazeĀ® proof site have shown potential to greatly improve livestock production. Promotion of the pasture technology is the next step. Key to this process is developing information about profitability and risk regarding the decision to invest in the new pasture. To help meet this need a model of a representative mixed livestock farm system for the region has been developed to generate information about profit, cash wealth and risk to aid extension and help inform decisions. The farm is comprised of a wool and meat producing sheep system and a beef enterprise. Using the model, the performance of two of the novel pasture systems can be evaluated against current practice, and compared to determine which of the two is the most beneficial EverGrazeĀ® option for the future. The risk associated with the pasture decision is assessed by considering different price structures and seasonal outcomes, and evaluating these effects on net benefits. Discounted cash flows, net present values and internal rates of return are estimated for the alternative systems, which include the effects of this price and seasonal variability. Preliminary results have been calculated, however further work is needed to confirm these. The method and results of the analysis provide information that is valuable for farm decisions about investing in a new pasture system and provide a basis for future economic analyses at the case study site and elsewhere.Farm Management,

    Incubation experiments using nitrogen isotope discrimination to estimate ammonia emission from amended sheep manure treatments.

    Two 10-day in vitro experiments were conducted to investigate the relationship between nitrogen (N) isotope discrimination (Ī“15N) and ammonia (NH3) emissions from sheep manure. In Exp. 1, three different manure mixtures were set up: control (C); C mixed with lignite (C+L); and grape marc (GM), with 5, 4 and 5 replications, respectively. For C, urine and faeces were collected from sheep fed a diet of 550 g lucerne hay/kg, 400 g barley grain/kg and 50 g faba bean/kg; for C+L, urine and faeces were collected from sheep fed the C diet and 100 g ground lignite added to each incubation system at the start of the experiment; for GM, urine and faeces were collected from sheep fed a diet consisting of C diet with 200 g/kg of the diet replaced with GM. In Exp. 2, three different urine-faeces mixtures were set up: 2U:1F, 1.4U:1F, and 1U:1F with urine to faeces ratios of 2:1, 1.4:1, and 1:1, respectively, each with 5 replications. Lignite in C+L led to significantly lower cumulative manure-N loss by 81% and 68% in comparison with C and GM groups, respectively (P = 0.001). Cumulative emitted manure NH3-N was lower in C+L than C and GM groups by 35% and 36%, respectively (P = 0.020). Emitted manure NH3-N was higher in 2U:1F compared to 1.4U:1F and 1U:1F by 18% and 26%, respectively (P &lt; 0.001). This confirms the relationship between manure Ī“15N and cumulative NH3-N loss reported by earlier studies, which may be useful for estimating NH3 losses.</p

    Insects: a novel animal-feed protein source for the Australian market

    The increasing demands on natural resources to provide food and feed has led to increased global initiatives to improve production sustainability and efficiency. The use of insects as an alternate source of protein for human food and production-animal feed is one such avenue gaining attention. With there being a large variety of insect species endemic to each region, there is likely to be an ideal candidate for each specific production system and region. Insects require less land and water than do terrestrial animals, have high feed-conversion efficiency (FCE) and emit low levels of greenhouse gases (GHG). Insect species currently investigated for mass production include black soldier fly larvae (BSFL), mealworms and crickets. In western societies, it is less likely that wide-scale adoption of insects as a food source will occur, although speciality products with ā€˜hiddenā€™ insects, such as cricket flour, are commercially available. It is likely to be more achievable for insects to be included into the diets of production and companion animals. While there has been significant investment in research and development of large-scale insect-production systems, such facilities are yet to start producing at a significant scale. The safety and efficacy of insects as a food or feed must be established in conjunction with the development of mass rearing facilities and the optimisation of insect-rearing substrates. Insects also have nutraceutical properties that may have beneficial impacts on animal health and growth, with scope for these properties to be exploited as feed or food additives. The present review will explore the following question: ā€˜are insects a future livestock industry for Australia?

    Evaluation of legumes for fermentability and protein fractions using in vitro rumen fermentation

    Diversifying feed with non-traditional options could minimize the dependency on traditional sources, maintain the feed supply throughout the year, and potentially reduce the cost of raising animals. A total of eight forage legumes including Peltophorum pterocarpum, Neptunia monosperma, Vachellia sutherlandii (Corkwood), Gliricidia sepium, Bauhinia hookeri and three Desmanthus species (JCU4, JCU5 and JCU9) were collected to assess their in vitro fermentability, degradable and undegradable protein fractions using in vitro gas production method. Soybean meal and lucerne hay were used as control. The total gas production ranged from 12.8 mL/g in P. pterocarpum to 127.3 mL/g in soybean meal. The total volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentration from G. sepium (117.7 mM/L) and V. sutherlandii (111.3 mM/L) were larger than other legumes except for soybean meal (157.1 mM/L) and lucerne hay (130.4 mM/L), P < 0.001. The methane gas produced from B. hookeri and P. pterocarpum (0.39 and 0.32 mL/g) was lower than other feeds, P < 0.001. The V. sutherlandii (720 g/kg crude protein (CP)) and G. sepium (745 g/kg CP) had the greatest effective CP degradation (EPD) than other legume species examined, P < 0.001, which was approaching that measured in the control samples. The amount of protein fraction ā€˜aā€™ (rapidly degradable) was larger in JCU9 (551 g/kg CP), and G. sepium (472 g/kg CP), and lower in B. hookeri (10.9 g/kg CP) and P. pterocarpum (14.8 g/kg CP), P < 0.001. The V. sutherlandii (386 g/kg CP) and G. sepium (272 g/kg CP) exceeded other legumes in the proportion of fraction ā€˜bā€™ (slowly degradable), P < 0.001, but not the controls. The undegradable fraction increased with increasing phenolic content and reached more than 940 g/kg CP for both B. hookeri and P. pterocarpum. The Desmanthus cultivars showed intermediate values among the tested legumes in fermentation characteristics and shows potential to provide slowly degradable protein while reducing methane. The findings indicate the possibility of using V. sutherlandii and G. sepium to substitute other forages for their greater slowly degradable protein content. Moreover, B. hookeri and P. pterocarpum plants emerged as candidates to assist protein protection in the rumen and reduce methane emissions. However, these legumes need to be evaluated in vivo before promoting for further use to confirm the variability reported here

    Dietary manipulation of muscle long-chain omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids and sensory properties of lamb meat

    The effects of dietary manipulation of muscle long-chain omega-3 fatty acids (FA) on sensory properties of cooked meat in second cross ([Merino&times;Border Leicester]&times;Poll Dorset) wether lambs were evaluated. Lambs fed dietary supplements of fish meal (FM, Exp. 1) and fish oil (FO, Exp. 2) showed moderately (P&lt;0.01) and markedly (P&lt;0.001) increased muscle long-chain omega-3 FA content compared with those fed the basal diet of lucerne chaff and oat chaff. Protected canola seed (PCS, Exp. 1) significantly (P&lt;0.001) increased omega-6 FA content of the longissimus muscle. In each of the 2 experiments (1 and 2), after being fed experimental diets for 6 weeks lambs were slaughtered at a commercial abattoir. At 24 h post-mortem (PM) the semitendinosus and biceps femoris muscles were removed from animals and stored at &minus;20&deg;C until evaluation of sensory properties using experienced panel members. The muscle samples were stored for 3 (Exp. 1) and 12 (Exp. 2) months then removed, thawed and cooked for sensory evaluation. The meat samples were cooked under standardized conditions in a convection microwave at 180&deg;C (20&ndash;25 min) to an internal temperature of 75&deg;C. Cooked samples were tested for flavour, aroma, juiciness and overall palatability. The significant increase in muscle long-chain omega-3 with FM (Exp. 1 and 2) and FO (Exp. 2) or omega-6 FA with PCS (Exp. 1) were not detrimental to sensory panel evaluations of flavour or aroma of cooked meat when compared with the basal diet. However, meat from FM (Exp. 1) had lower juiciness and FO (Exp. 2) had lower overall palatability. Protected sunflower meal protein with FO (Exp. 2) significantly lowered ratings for flavour, juiciness and overall palatability. Lamb meat with increased levels of long-chain omega-3 FA can be produced without altering the sensory quality (flavour or aroma) of the cooked meat.<br /

    Dietary Betaine Impacts the Physiological Responses to Moderate Heat Conditions in a Dose Dependent Manner in Sheep

    Heat exposure (HE) results in decreased production in ruminant species and betaine is proposed as a dietary mitigation method. Merino ewes ( n = 36, 40 kg, n = 6 per group) were maintained at thermoneutral (TN, n = 18, 21 Ā°C) or cyclical HE ( n = 18, 18ā€“43 Ā°C) conditions for 21 days, and supplemented with either 0 (control), 2 or 4 g betaine/day. Sheep had ad libitum access to water and were pair fed such that intake of sheep on the TN treatment matched that of HE animals. Heart rate (HR), respiration rate (RR), rectal (T R ) and skin temperatures (T S ) were measured 3 times daily (0900 h, 1300 h, 1700 h). Plasma samples were obtained on 8 days for glucose and NEFA analysis. The HE treatment increased T R by 0.7 Ā°C (40.1 vs. 39.4 Ā°C for HE and TN respectively p &lt; 0.001), T S by +1.8 Ā°C (39.3 vs. 37.5 Ā°C, p &lt; 0.001) and RR by +46 breaths/min (133 vs. 87 breaths/min, p &lt; 0.001) compared to TN. The 2 g betaine/day treatment decreased T R (39.8, 39.6 and 39.8 Ā°C, p &lt; 0.001), T S (38.7, 38.0 and 38.5 Ā°C, p &lt; 0.001) and RR (114, 102 and 116 breaths/min for control, 2 and 4 g betaine/day, p &lt; 0.001) compared to control. Betaine supplementation decreased plasma NEFA concentrations by ~25 Ī¼M (80, 55 and 54 Ī¼mol/L for 0, 2 and 4 g/day respectively, p = 0.05). These data indicate that dietary betaine supplementation at 2 g betaine/day provides improvements in physiological responses typical of ewes exposed to heat stress and may be a beneficial supplement for the management of sheep during summer

    Effect of diets containing n-3 fatty acids on muscle long-chain n-3 fatty acid content in lambs fed low- and medium-quality roughage diets

    In two experiments, each with 32 crossbred ([Merino x Border Leicester] x Poll Dorset) wether lambs (26 to 33 kg weight range), animals were randomly assigned to one of four treatments. A mixture of lucerne chaff:oaten chaff was used as a basal diet, offered in different ratios. Animals were allowed to consume on a free-access basis in Exp. 1 or 90% of ad libitum intake in Exp. 2 in order to provide a low- (6.5 MJ ME/d) and medium- (9.5 MJ ME/d) quality basal diet, respectively. Isoenergetic amounts of lipid supplements, fish meal (80 g DM), canola meal (84 g DM), and soy meal (75 g DM) were tested in Exp. 1. In Exp. 2, fish meal (9% DM), unprotected rapeseed (7% DM), and protected canola seed (6% DM) were fed as supplements. At the end of 53-d (Exp. 1) or 46-d (Exp. 2) experimental periods, lambs were slaughtered at a commercial abattoir and at 24 h postmortem longissimus thoracis (LT) muscle was collected for the analysis of fatty acid (FA) composition of structural phospholipid and storage triglyceride fractions. Fish meal diet increased LT muscle long-chain n-3 FA content by 27% (P &lt; 0.02) in Exp. I and 30% (P &lt; 0.001) in Exp. 2 compared with lambs fed the basal diet, but fish meal decreased (P &lt; 0.01) the n-6 FA content only in Exp. 1. Soy meal and protected canola seed diets increased (P &lt; 0.01) LT muscle n-6 FA content but did not affect long-chain n-3 FA content. Longissimus thoracis muscle long-chain n-3 FA were mainly deposited in structural phospholipid, rather than in storage triglyceride. In both Exp. 1 and Exp. 2, the ratio of n-6:n-3 FA in LT muscle was lowest (P &lt; 0.01) in lambs fed fish meal supplement compared with all other treatments. Protected canola seed diet increased the ratio of n-6:n-3 FA (P &lt; 0.01) and PUFA:saturated fatty acid (P &lt; 0.03) content from those animals fed the basal, fish meal, and unprotected rapeseed diets in Exp. 2. This was due to an increase in muscle n-6 FA content, mainly linoleic acid, of both phospholipid (P &lt; 0.001) and triglyceride (P &lt; 0.01) fractions and not to an increase in muscle n3 FA content. The results indicate that by feeding fish meal supplement, the essential n-3 FA can be increased while lowering the ratio of n-6:n-3 content in lamb meat to an extent that could affect nutritional value, attractiveness, and the economic value of meat. <br /

    Physiological Effects of Ergot Alkaloid and Indole-Diterpene Consumption on Sheep under Hot and Thermoneutral Ambient Temperature Conditions

    A controlled feeding study was undertaken to determine the physiological and production effects of consuming perennial ryegrass alkaloids (fed via seed) under extreme heat in sheep. Twenty-four Merino ewe weaners (6 months; initial BW 30.8 Ā± 1.0 kg) were selected and the treatment period lasted 21 days following a 14 day acclimatisation period. Two levels of two factors were used. The first factor was alkaloid, fed at a nil (NilAlk) or moderate level (Alk; 80 Ī¼g/kg LW ergovaline and 20.5 Ī¼g/kgĀ·LW lolitrem B). The second factor was ambient temperature applied at two levels; thermoneutral (TN; constant 21ā€“22 Ā°C) or heat (Heat; 9:00 AMā€“5:00 PM at 38 Ā°C; 5:00 PMā€“9:00 AM at 21ā€“22 Ā°C), resulting in four treatments, NilAlk TN, NilAlk Heat, Alk TN and Alk Heat. Alkaloid consumption reduced dry matter intake ( p = 0.008), and tended to reduce liveweight ( p = 0.07). Rectal temperature and respiration rate were increased by both alkaloid and heat ( p &lt; 0.05 for all). Respiration rate increased to severe levels when alkaloid and heat were combined, indicating the short term effects which may be occurring in perennial ryegrass toxicosis (PRGT) areas during severe weather conditions, a novel finding. When alkaloid ingestion and heat were administered separately, similar physiological responses occurred, indicating alkaloid ingestion causes a similar heat stress response to 38 Ā°C heat

    Proliferative and inhibitory activity of Siberian ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus) extract on cancer cell lines; A-549, XWLC-05, HCT-116, CNE and Beas-2b

    Siberian ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus) is used primarily as an adaptogen herb and also for its immune stimulant properties in Western herbal medicine. Another closely related species used in East Asian medicine systems i.e. Kampo, TCM (Manchuria, Korea, Japan and Ainu of Hokkaido) and also called Siberian ginseng (Acanthopanax senticosus) also displays immune-stimulant and anti-cancer properties. These may affect tumour growth and also provide an anti-fatigue effect for cancer patients, in particular for those suffering from lung cancer. There is some evidence that a carbohydrate in Siberian ginseng may possess not only immune stimulatory but also anti-tumour effects and also display other various anti-cancer properties. Our study aimed to determine the inhibitory and also proliferative effects of a methanol plant extract of Siberan ginseng (E. senticosus) on various cancer and normal cell lines including: A-549 (small cell lung cancer), XWLC-05 (Yunnan lung cancer cell line), CNE (human nasopharyngeal carcinoma cell line), HCT-116 (human colon cancer) and Beas-2b (human lung epithelial). These cell lines were treated with an extract from E. senticosus that was evaporated and reconstituted in DMSO. Treatment of A-549 (small cell lung cancer) cells with E. senticosus methanolic extract showed a concentration-dependent inhibitory trend from 12.5 - 50Āµg/mL, and then a plateau, whereas at 12.5 and 25 Āµg/mL, there is a slight growth suppression in QBC-939 cells, but then a steady suppression from 50, 100 and 200Āµg/mL. Further, in XWLC-05 (Yunnan lung cancer cell line), E. senticosus methanolic extract displayed an inhibitory effect which plateaued with increasing dosage. Next, in CNE (human nasopharyngeal carcinoma cell line) there was a dose dependent proliferative response, whereas in Beas-2 (human lung epithelial cell line), an inhibitory effect. Finally in colon cancer cell line (HCT-116) we observed an initially weak inhibitory effect and then plateau
