    Hong Kong is no stranger to bubbles or crisis. During the Asian Financial Crisis(AFC), the Hong Kong housing price index drops more than 50% in less than a year. The same market then experiences the Internet Bubble, the SARS attack, and recently the Global Financial Crisis (GFC). This paper attempts to provide some “stylized facts” of the real estate markets and the macroeconomy, and follow the event-study methodology to examine whether the markets behave differently in the AFC and GFC, and discuss the possible linkage to the change in government policies (“learning effect”) and the flow of Chinese consumers and investors to Hong Kong (“China factor”).regime switching, structural change, small open economy, bounded rationality, banking policy

    Modelling the sound absorption of panels with tapered elliptic micro-perforations

    A theoretical model is developed in the present study to predict the spectral characteristics of the sound absorption of solid panels with tapered elliptic micro-perforations backed by a rigid wall cavity. In the model, plane wave propagation is assumed along the length of the perforation in the presence of a viscous boundary layer at the internal wall of the perforation. End impedances are approximated using results in existing literature. Validation is done using impedance tube measurements. It is confirmed that the present tapered elliptic perforation model can give much better agreement with experimental results than the conventional cylindrical perforation model for all micro-perforation configurations tested. Results also suggest the importance of perforation density in controlling the variation of sound absorption of the panel absorbers upon changes in perforation configurations

    Sound transmission across a rectangular duct section with a thin micro-perforated wall backed by a sidebranch cavity

    An experimental investigation was carried out in the present study for deeper understanding on the sound transmission across a rectangular duct section installed with a thin micro-perforated panel (as a duct wall) backed by a sidebranch cavity. The contributions of the panel configuration and the cavity depth on reducing sound transmission are examined in detail. Results indicate a complicated relationship between sound power transmission, micro-perforation configuration and backing cavity depth. For panels with strong sound absorption capacity, sound power transmission efficiency is reduced as the panels become less absorptive, but there exists a frequency or frequency band above which the opposite is observed. It appears that there is also a certain level of panel sound absorption below which the sound transmission is strengthened over the whole frequency range of present study when the panel becomes less absorptive to sound

    Multi-wavelength emissions from the millisecond pulsar binary PSR J1023+0038 during an accretion active state

    Recent observations strongly suggest that the millisecond pulsar binary PSR J1023+0038 has developed an accretion disk since 2013 June. We present a multi-wavelength analysis of PSR J1023+0038, which reveals that 1) its gamma-rays suddenly brightened within a few days in June/July 2013 and has remained at a high gamma-ray state for several months; 2) both UV and X-ray fluxes have increased by roughly an order of magnitude, and 3) the spectral energy distribution has changed significantly after the gamma-ray sudden flux change. Time variabilities associated with UV and X-rays are on the order of 100-500 seconds and 50-100 seconds, respectively. Our model suggests that a newly formed accretion disk due to the sudden increase of the stellar wind could explain the changes of all these observed features. The increase of UV is emitted from the disk, and a new component in gamma-rays is produced by inverse Compton scattering between the new UV component and pulsar wind. The increase of X-rays results from the enhancement of injection pulsar wind energy into the intra-binary shock due to the increase of the stellar wind.     Inviscid two dimensional vortex dynamics and a soliton expansion of the sinh-Poisson equation

    The dynamics of inviscid, steady, two dimensional flows is examined for the case of a hyperbolic sine functional relation between the vorticity and the stream function. The 2-soliton solution of the sinh-Poisson equation with complex wavenumbers will reproduce the Mallier-Maslowe pattern, a row of counter-rotating vortices. A special 4-soliton solution is derived and the corresponding flow configuration is studied. By choosing special wavenumbers complex flows bounded by two rigid walls can result. A conjecture regarding the number of recirculation regions and the wavenumber of the soliton expansion is offered. The validity of the new solution is verified independently by direct differentiation with a computer algebra software. The circulation and the vorticity of these novel flow patterns are finite and are expressed in terms of well defined integrals. The questions of the linear stability and the nonlinear evolution of a finite amplitude disturbance of these steady vortices are left for future studies. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.published_or_final_versio

    Acoustic radiation by vortex induced flexible wall vibration

    Sound radiation due to unsteady interaction between an inviscid vortex (which models a turbulent eddy) and a finite length flexible boundary in a two-dimensional space is studied using potential theory and the matched asymptotic expansion technique. The Mach number of the vortex propagation is kept below 0.15. Results suggest that the monopole field created by the volumetric flow induced by the vibrating flexible boundary dominates the overall acoustic power radiation. The longitudinal dipole directly due to the transverse vortex acceleration is only important when the vortex is moving over the flexible boundary. The longitudinal dipole resulting from the boundary vibration gains slightly in importance in the strong vortex case, but the corresponding transverse dipole remains negligible for the cases considered in the present study. The two longitudinal dipoles give rise to biased radiation directivities on both sides of the flexible boundary. © 2005 Acoustical Society of America.published_or_final_versio

    Ferrocene-Decorated Hyperbranched Poly(aroxycarbonylphenylene)s: Synthesis, Light Refraction, Photopatterning and Precursor to Magnetic Ceramics

    Ferrocene-decorated hyperbranched poly[1,3,5-tri(aroycarbonyl)phenylene]s (hb-PTACPs) are prepared in moderate yields with high molecular weights by one-pot polycyclotrimerization of 4,4'-isopropylidenediphenyl bipropiolate with 4-(ferrocenylmethyl)phenyl propiolate in reflux dimethylformamide. All the polymers are soluble and film-forming. They enjoy high thermal stability and lost little of their weight when heated to 300 °C under nitrogen. Thin solid films of the organometallic polymers shows high refractive indices (RI = 1.7038–1.6295) in the wavelength region of 400–1,700 nm. Ceramization of the organometallic hb-PTACPs at high temperature under inert atmosphere gives iron nanoparticles with high magnetizabilities. The organometallic polymers are readily cross-linked under UV irradiation and pyrolysis of the patterned polymer films produces magnetic ceramic patterns with good shape retention
