    Identification and verification of frequency-domain models for XV-15 tilt-rotor aircraft dynamics

    Frequency-domain methods are used to extract the open-loop dynamics of the XV-15 tilt-rotor aircraft from flight test data for the cruise condition (V = 170 knots). The frequency responses are numerically fitted with transfer-function forms to identify equivalent model characteristics. The associated handling quality parameters meet or exceed Level 2, Category A, requirements for fixed-wing military aircraft. Step response matching is used to verify the time-domain fidelity of the transfer-function models for the cruise and hover flight conditions. The transient responses of the model and aircraft are in close agreement in all cases, except for the normal acceleration response to elevator deflection in cruise. This discrepancy is probably due to the unmodeled rotor rpm dynamics. The utility of the frequency-domain approach for dynamics identification and analysis is clearly demonstrated

    Eigenvector Expansion and Petermann Factor for Ohmically Damped Oscillators

    Correlation functions C(t)C(t) \sim in ohmically damped systems such as coupled harmonic oscillators or optical resonators can be expressed as a single sum over modes jj (which are not power-orthogonal), with each term multiplied by the Petermann factor (PF) CjC_j, leading to "excess noise" when Cj>1|C_j| > 1. It is shown that Cj>1|C_j| > 1 is common rather than exceptional, that Cj|C_j| can be large even for weak damping, and that the PF appears in other processes as well: for example, a time-independent perturbation \sim\ep leads to a frequency shift \sim \ep C_j. The coalescence of JJ (>1>1) eigenvectors gives rise to a critical point, which exhibits "giant excess noise" (CjC_j \to \infty). At critical points, the divergent parts of JJ contributions to C(t)C(t) cancel, while time-independent perturbations lead to non-analytic shifts \sim \ep^{1/J}.Comment: REVTeX4, 14 pages, 4 figures. v2: final, 20 single-col. pages, 2 figures.     Quasi-Normal Mode Expansion for Linearized Waves in Gravitational Systems

    The quasinormal modes (QNM's) of gravitational systems modeled by the Klein-Gordon equation with effective potentials are studied in analogy to the QNM's of optical cavities. Conditions are given for the QNM's to form a complete set, i.e., for the Green's function to be expressible as a sum over QNM's, answering a conjecture by Price and Husain [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 68}, 1973 (1992)]. In the cases where the QNM sum is divergent, procedures for regularization are given. The crucial condition for completeness is the existence of spatial discontinuities in the system, e.g., the discontinuity at the stellar surface in the model of Price and Husain.Comment: 12 pages, WUGRAV-94-

    Controlling for transactions bias in regional house price indices

    Transactions bias arises when properties that trade are not a random sample of the total housing stock. Price indices are susceptible because they are typically based on transactions data. Existing approaches to this problem rely on Heckman-type correction methods, where a probit regression is used to capture the differences between properties that sell and those that do not sell in a given period. However, this approach can only be applied where there is reliable data on the whole housing stock. In many countries—the UK included—no such data exist and there is little prospect of correcting for transactions bias in any of the regularly updated mainstream house price indices. Thispaper suggests a possible alternative approach, using information at postcode sector level and Fractional Probit Regression to correct for transactions bias in hedonic price indices based on one and a half million house sales from 1996 to 2004, distributed across 1200 postcode sectors in the South East of England

    Optimal simulation of two-qubit Hamiltonians using general local operations

    We consider the simulation of the dynamics of one nonlocal Hamiltonian by another, allowing arbitrary local resources but no entanglement nor classical communication. We characterize notions of simulation, and proceed to focus on deterministic simulation involving one copy of the system. More specifically, two otherwise isolated systems AA and BB interact by a nonlocal Hamiltonian HHA+HBH \neq H_A+H_B. We consider the achievable space of Hamiltonians HH' such that the evolution eiHte^{-iH't} can be simulated by the interaction HH interspersed with local operations. For any dimensions of AA and BB, and any nonlocal Hamiltonians HH and HH', there exists a scale factor ss such that for all times tt the evolution eiHste^{-iH'st} can be simulated by HH acting for time tt interspersed with local operations. For 2-qubit Hamiltonians HH and HH', we calculate the optimal ss and give protocols achieving it.     Heuristic derivation of continuum kinetic equations from microscopic dynamics

    We present an approximate and heuristic scheme for the derivation of continuum kinetic equations from microscopic dynamics for stochastic, interacting systems. The method consists of a mean-field type, decoupled approximation of the master equation followed by the `naive' continuum limit. The Ising model and driven diffusive systems are used as illustrations. The equations derived are in agreement with other approaches, and consequences of the microscopic dependences of coarse-grained parameters compare favorably with exact or high-temperature expansions.     A finite element model with seven degrees of freedom per node is developed to study vibration and buckling of thin-walled composite I-beams with arbitrary lay-ups under constant axial loads and equal end moments. This model is based on the classical lamination theory, and accounts for all the structural coupling coming from material anisotropy. The governing differential equations are derived from the Hamilton’s principle. Numerical results are obtained for thin-walled composite I-beams to investigate the effects of axial force, bending moment and fiber orientation on the buckling moments, natural frequencies, and corresponding vibration mode shapes as well as axial-moment-frequency interaction curves

    A Model-independent Description of New Physics effects in e+e- to t tbar

    We study the potential of a future e+ee^+e^- collider for the search of anomalous gamma t t bar and Z t t bar couplings, assuming that CP-invariance holds. This is done in a model-independent way, considering that all six possible couplings do appear. Two experimental situations are envisaged, with and without electron beam polarization. Observability limits in the form of domains in the 6-dimensional parameter space are established.
