Evolution, epistemology and realism The aim of this article is to characterize evolutionary epistemology and to indicate its relation with philosophical realism. I first part of text I examine relation between philosophy and biology as nature science. In second part I draw main assumptions of two main currents of evolutionary epistemology evolutionary epistemology of mechanisms and evolutionary epistemology of theories. In the article I discuss Roger Scruton’s opposition between utopian optimism and anti- -utopian pessimism. I show how it connects with the concepts of politics of faith and politics of skepticism introduced by Michael Oakeshott. Then I explain the relationship between the attitude of skeptical moderation and philosophical realism

Czy kognitywistyka może coś dać filozofii?

Termin „kognitywistyka” robi dziś w kręgach humanistów sporą karierę, po raz kolejny budząc nadzieję na możliwość unaukowienia własnych spekulacji i dorównania „porządnym” naukom, za które uważa się matematyczno-eksperymentalne nauki przyrodnicze. Sytuacji tej - interesującej zarówno dla filozofa, jak i dla historyka idei - warto się przyjrzeć, dostarcza ona bowiem sporo informacji o aktualnych, nie zawsze jasno eksplikowanych wyobrażeniach na temat natury nauki, filozofii oraz relacji między nimi. Punktem wyjścia dla analiz jest postawione w tytule pytanie, na które odpowiedź (nietrywialna) wcale nie wydaje się oczywista, zwłaszcza gdy dostrzeżemy, iż relacje między kognitywistyką a filozof ą nie przypominają relacji między np. fizyką a biologią, bądź chemią a socjologią. Określenie stosunku filozofii do nauki wymaga pewnych rozstrzygnięć dotyczących natury samej filozofii, i od tego dopiero zależeć będzie taka lub inna odpowiedź na zadane pytanie, a także argumentacja na jej rzecz. Ponieważ filozoficznych koncepcji filozofii jest sporo, omawiam tylko kilka z nich, najbardziej rozpowszechnionych, a następnie pokazuję, że te, na gruncie których na postawione w tytule pytanie odpowiada się twierdząco (głosząc nawet, że kognitywistyka nie tylko filozofii może coś dać, ale że filozofia, a zwłaszcza filozofia umysłu, z kognitywistyki musi koniecznie czerpać), proponują wysoce ograniczony i intelektualnie mało płodny typ filozoficznych dociekań

In the collection of articles by Peter Strawson published in his Analysis and metaphysics the author defines his meta-philosophical position by offering two analogies, relating respectively to philosophy conceived as therapy and to philosophy construed as a grammar of thought. These analogies, if they are viewed in a perspective invoked by reflections on ‘the human condition’ – admittedly, a style of investigation fairly remote form analytic research – open several interesting questions and raise puzzling uncertainties. If we follow some implications of these queries, the general position of Strawson in contemporary philosophy becomes more convincing; it fits quite comfortably in the ‘mainstream philosophy’, and highlights some leading topics in the eternal philosophical agenda
