An apertureless near-field microscope for fluorescence imaging
We describe an apertureless near field microscope for imaging fluorescent samples. Optical contrast is generated by exploiting fluorescent quenching near a metallized atomic force microscope tip. This microscope has been used to image fluorescent latex beads with subdiffraction limit resolution. The use of fluorescence allows us to prove that the contrast mechanism is indeed spectroscopic in origin
Characterization of slow and fast phase nystagmus
A current literature review of the analog and digital process of vestibular and optical kinetic nystagmus reveals little agreement in the methods used by various labs. The strategies for detection of saccade (fast phase velocity component of nystagmus) vary between labs, and most of the process have not been evaluated and validated with a standard database. A survey was made of major vestibular labs in the U.S. that perform computer analyses of vestibular and optokinetic reflexes to stimuli, and a baseline was established from which to standardize data acquisition and analysis programs. The concept of an Error Index was employed as the criterium for evaluating the performance of the vestibular analysis software programs. The performance criterium is based on the detection of saccades and is the average of the percentages of missed detections and false detections. Evaluation of the programs produced results for lateral gaze with saccadic amplitude of one, two, three, five, and ten degrees with various signal-to-noise ratios. In addition, results were obtained for sinusoidal pursuit of 0.05, 0.10, and 0.50 Hz with saccades from one to ten degrees at various signal-to-noise ratios. Selection of the best program was made from the performance in the lateral gaze with three degrees of saccadic amplitude and in the 0.10 Hz sinusoid with three degrees of saccadic amplitude
Aspects of topology of condensates and knotted solitons in condensed matter systems
The knotted solitons introduced by Faddeev and Niemi is presently a subject
of great interest in particle and mathematical physics. In this paper we give a
condensed matter interpretation of the recent results of Faddeev and Niemi.Comment: v2: Added a reference to the paper E. Babaev, L.D. Faddeev and A.J.

two-condensate Ginzburg-Landau model and a version of Faddeev model.

Tunneling Anisotropic Magnetoresistance in Co/AlOx/Au Tunnel Junctions
We observe spin-valve-like effects in nano-scaled thermally evaporated
Co/AlOx/Au tunnel junctions. The tunneling magnetoresistance is anisotropic and
depends on the relative orientation of the magnetization direction of the Co
electrode with respect to the current direction. We attribute this effect to a
two-step magnetization reversal and an anisotropic density of states resulting
from spin-orbit interaction. The results of this study points to future
applications of novel spintronics devices involving only one ferromagnetic

Scanning apertureless fluorescence microscope
We describe a near-field apertureless fluorescence microscope, capable of imaging fluorescent latex beads with subwavelength precision. The instrument is based on a home- built tapping-mode atomic-force microscope, to which an inverted optical microscope was added. The fact that the wavelength of the fluorescence that we observe is different from the wavelength of the illumination allows for a relatively straightforward detection mechanism. Sample images are presented, along with evidence that the observe effect is of optical origin
TeV Observations of the Variability and Spectrum of Markarian 501
Markarian 501 is only the second extragalactic source to be detected with
high statistical certainty at TeV energies; it is similar in many ways to
Markarian 421. The Whipple Observatory gamma-ray telescope has been used to
observe the AGN Markarian 501 in 1996 and 1997, the years subsequent to its
initial detection. The apparent variability on the one-day time-scale observed
in TeV gamma rays in 1995 is confirmed and compared with the variability in
Markarian 421. Observations at X-ray and optical wavelengths from 1997 are also

Tev Observations of the Variability and Spectrum of Markarian 421
Markarian 421 was the first extragalactic source to be detected with high
statistical certainty at TeV energies. The Whipple Observatory gamma-ray
telescope has been used to observe the Active Galactic Nucleus, Markarian 421
in 1996 and 1997. The rapid variability observed in TeV gamma rays in previous
years is confirmed. Doubling times as short as 15 minutes are reported with
flux levels reaching 15 photons per minute. The TeV energy spectrum is derived
using two independent methods. The implications for the intergalactic infra-red
medium of an observed unbroken power law spectrum up to energies of 5 TeV is
