    Satellite-aided land mobile communications system implementation considerations

    It was proposed that a satellite-based land mobile radio system could effectively extend the terrestrial cellular mobile system into rural and remote areas. The market, technical and economic feasibility for such a system is studied. Some of the aspects of implementing an operational mobile-satellite system are discussed. In particular, two key factors in implementation are examined: (1) bandwidth requirements; and (2) frequency sharing. Bandwidth requirements are derived based on the satellite antenna requirements, modulation characteristics and numbers of subscribers. Design trade-offs for the satellite system and potential implementation scenarios are identified. Frequency sharing is examined from a power flux density and modulation viewpoint

    The economic interaction of the terrestrial and satellite systems is considered. Parametric equations are formulated to allow examination of necessary user thresholds and growth rates as a function of system costs. Conversely, first order allowable systems costs are found as a function of user thresholds and growth rates. Transitions between satellite and terrestrial service systems are examined. User growth rate density (user/year/sq km) is shown to be a key parameter in the analysis of systems compatibility. The concept of system design matching the price/demand curves is introduced and examples are given. The role of satellite systems is critically examined and the economic conditions necessary for the introduction of satellite service are identified

    Spacecraft attitude control for a solar electric geosynchronous transfer mission

    A study of the Attitude Control System (ACS) is made for a solar electric propulsion geosynchronous transfer mission. The basic mission considered is spacecraft injection into a low altitude, inclined orbit followed by low thrust orbit changing to achieve geosynchronous orbit. Because of the extended thrusting time, the mission performance is a strong function of the attitude control system. Two attitude control system design options for an example mission evolve from consideration of the spacecraft configuration, the environmental disturbances, and the probable ACS modes of operation. The impact of these design options on other spacecraft subsystems is discussed. The factors which must be considered in determining the ACS actuation and sensing subsystems are discussed. The effects of the actuation and sensing subsystems on the mission performance are also considered

    Alternatives for satellite sound broadcast systems at HF and VHF

    The National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the United States Information Agency (USIA) are currently engaged in a joint program to assess the technical and economic feasibility of direct sound broadcast satellite systems to meet USIA mission needs. The cooperative effort calls for a series of interrelated studies to provide the respective Agency managements with information on the potential role of direct broadcast satellites. Initial studies focused on HF propagation phenomena and broadcast coverage requirements. These studies served as the basis for parallel systems studies currently in progress. The systems studies are to provide a data base on various satellite configurations and systems concepts capable of supporting potential broadcast requirements ranging from a small fraction to a substantial addition to USIA requirements.     We have developed a new method for the isolation of proteins for microsequencing. It consists of electrophoretic transfer (electroblotting) of proteins or their cleavage fragments onto activated glass filter paper sheets immediately after separation by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The proteins are immobilized on the glass fiber sheets by ionic interactions or by covalent attachment. A wide range of proteins can be prepared in this fashion with no apparent restriction due to solubility, size, charge, or other intrinsic properties of the proteins. As little as 50 ng of the transferred proteins can be detected using Coomassie Blue or fluorescent dye staining procedures and even smaller amounts of radiolabeled proteins by autoradiography. After detection, the protein- containing bands or spots are cut out and inserted directly into a gas- phase sequenator. The piece of glass fiber sheet acts as a support for the protein during the sequencing. Amounts of protein in the 5- to 150- pmol range can be sequenced, and extended runs can be obtained from the blotted samples because of improved stepwise yields and lower backgrounds. The method has been successfully applied to the sequencing of a variety of proteins and peptides isolated from one-dimensional and two-dimensional polyacrylamide gels

    Performance of the SERT 2 spacecraft after 4 and one-half years in space

    The SERT 2 satellite, launched in February, 1970, has recently been reactivated after being dormant for a year. The satellite orientation was changed to spin stabilization in 1973 and the satellite is now coning such that the active side of the solar arrays move into and out of the sun every 23 days. There is sufficient power to operate the ion thrusters for seven days of this cycle. The 2 ion thruster system was successfully operated; the electrical short in the accelerating grids had cleared during the year long dormant phase

    The Mr 28,000 gap junction proteins from rat heart and liver are different but related

    The sequence of the amino-terminal 32 residues of the rat heart Mr 28,000 gap junction protein presented here allows, for the first time, a sequence comparison of gap junctional proteins from different tissues (heart and liver). Comparison of the rat heart gap junction protein sequence and that available from rat liver reveals 43% sequence identity and conservative changes at an additional 25% of the positions. Both proteins exhibit a hydrophobic domain which could represent a transmembrane span of the junction. This result unequivocally demonstrates the existence of at least two forms of the gap junction protein. As yet, no homology is evident between the gap junctional proteins of either heart or liver and main intrinsic protein from rat eye lens

    Spacecraft design sensitivity for a disaster warning satellite system

    A disaster warning satellite (DWS) is described for warning the general public of impending natural catastrophes. The concept is responsive to NOAA requirements and maximizes the use of ATS-6 technology. Upon completion of concept development, the study was extended to establishing the sensitivity of the DWSS spacecraft power, weight, and cost to variations in both warning and conventional communications functions.     The magnetic field of the double-lined spectroscopic binary system HD 5550

    (Abridged) In the framework of the BinaMicS project, we have begun a study of the magnetic properties of a sample of intermediate-mass and massive short-period binary systems, as a function of binarity properties. We report in this paper the characterisation of the magnetic field of HD 5550, a double-lined spectroscopic binary system of intermediate-mass, using high-resolution spectropolarimetric Narval observations of HD 5550. We first fit the intensity spectra using Zeeman/ATLAS9 LTE synthetic spectra to estimate the effective temperatures, microturbulent velocities, and the abundances of some elements of both components, as well as the light-ratio of the system. We then fit the least-square deconvolved II profiles to determine the radial and projected rotational velocities of both stars. We then analysed the shape and evolution of the LSD VV profiles using the oblique rotator model to characterise the magnetic fields of both stars. We confirm the Ap nature of the primary, previously reported in the literature, and find that the secondary displays spectral characteristics typical of an Am star. While a magnetic field is clearly detected in the lines of the primary, no magnetic field is detected in the secondary, in any of our observation. If a dipolar field were present at the surface of the Am star, its polar strength must be below 40 G. The faint variability observed in the Stokes VV profiles of the Ap star allowed us to propose a rotation period of 6.84−0.39+0.616.84_{-0.39}^{+0.61} d, close to the orbital period (∼\sim6.82 d), suggesting that the star is synchronised with its orbit. By fitting the variability of the VV profiles, we propose that the Ap component hosts a dipolar field inclined with the rotation axis at an angle β=156±17\beta=156\pm17 ∘^{\circ} and a polar strength Bd=65±20B_{\rm d}=65 \pm 20 G.
