    An investigation of the relative costs and benefits of marketing channels used by typical small-scale diversified vegetable crop producers is conducted. Using case study evidence from four small farms in Central New York, this study compares the performance of wholesale and direct marketing channels, including how the factors of risk, owner and paid labor, price, lifestyle preferences, and sales volume interact to impact optimal market channel selection. Given the highly perishable nature of the crops grown, along with the risks and potential sales volume of particular channels, a combination of different marketing channels is needed to maximize overall firm performance.     Dimethomorph and metalaxyl sensitivity in somatic hybrids of Phytophthora parasitica obtained by protoplast fusion

    Protoplasts were successfully isolated from wild-type and mutant strains of #Phytophthora nicotianae var. #parasitica using Novozym 234. Putative somatic hybrids were recovered following protoplast fusions from the first time to dimethomorph resistant strain P 310 (Dim r) or metalaxyl P 26 (Met r) by selection on agar amended with dimethomorph and metalaxyl. Fusion products from this cross were resistant to dimethomorph and metalaxyl. Zoospore progeny from the fusion products retained this phenotype, suggesting that nuclear fusion had taken place.     Renormalization : A number theoretical model

    We analyse the Dirichlet convolution ring of arithmetic number theoretic functions. It turns out to fail to be a Hopf algebra on the diagonal, due to the lack of complete multiplicativity of the product and coproduct. A related Hopf algebra can be established, which however overcounts the diagonal. We argue that the mechanism of renormalization in quantum field theory is modelled after the same principle. Singularities hence arise as a (now continuously indexed) overcounting on the diagonals.     Evidence of jaagsiekte sheep retrovirus-induced pulmonary adenocarcinoma in Ouled Djellal breed sheep in Algeria

    We report the occurrence of lung cancer in a six months old lamb of Ouled Djellal breed from Algeria. The main clinical sign was a considerable amount of whitish foamy fluid discharge from the nostrils when the animal head was lowered and the rear end was lifted. The postmortem examination revealed the presence of enlarged, heavy and edematous lungs with diffuse or foci areas, reddish or white-gray in color. The gross and histological lesions of the lungs were compatible with pulmonary adenocarcinoma. Lung adenocarcinoma in sheep is caused by jaagsiekte sheep retrovirus (JSRV) and originated from differentiated alveolar type II cells and non-ciliated bronchiolar epithelial Clara cells. We evidenced the expression of the oncogenic JSRV by immunostaining of lung slides with specific antibodies against the JSRV envelope. The viral proteins were expressed only in the tumor cells from the affected areas.     LUX -- A Laser-Plasma Driven Undulator Beamline

    The LUX beamline is a novel type of laser-plasma accelerator. Building on the joint expertise of the University of Hamburg and DESY the beamline was carefully designed to combine state-of-the-art expertise in laser-plasma acceleration with the latest advances in accelerator technology and beam diagnostics. LUX introduces a paradigm change moving from single-shot demonstration experiments towards available, stable and controllable accelerator operation. Here, we discuss the general design concepts of LUX and present first critical milestones that have recently been achieved, including the generation of electron beams at the repetition rate of up to 5 Hz with energies above 600 MeV and the generation of spontaneous undulator radiation at a wavelength well below 9 nm.Comment: submitte

    Bipyridinium-bis(carboxylate) Radical Based Materials: X-ray, EPR and Paramagnetic Solid-State NMR Investigations

    The zwitterionic 1,1′-bis(4-carboxyphenyl)-4,4′-bipyridinium (bp4pc) has been synthesized and crystals of its hydrated form bp4pc·2H2O and of its protonated reduced form H-bp4pc have been obtained. Upon heating, bp4pc·2H2O undergoes partial dehydration, leading to bp4pc·H2O at 160 °C, together with a color change from yellow (room temperature) to green (140 °C) and finally to brown (160–180 °C). Analysis of bond lengths in the solid state reveals the expected short (d = 1.425 Å) and long (d = 1.485 Å) C–C central bond lengths in the all-radical salt H-bp4pc and bp4pc·2H2O, respectively, whereas the distance of 1.475 Å in bp4pc·H2O does not allow a conclusion to be drawn regarding the presence of radicals in this compound. EPR and solid-state paramagnetic NMR experiments of H-bp4pc and the hydrated zwitterion bp4pc·2H2O at different temperatures, however, show that the color change of the latter upon heating is due to the presence of bipyridinium radicals, the concentration of which, although low, increases with increasing temperature. The nature of the electron donor involved in this thermal-induced electron transfer is not fully understood. Most plausible is the possibility that it is the carboxylate group with an intramolecular electron-transfer process; on the other hand it, cannot be excluded that the electron stems from the water molecule, which decomposes into O2, H+, and e– giving H-bp4pc entities
