    Recorded displacements in a landslide slope due to regional and teleseismic earthquakes

    Regional and teleseismic earthquakes can induce displacements along joints in a landslideinvolved rocky slope in Central Italy. The rarity of these effects is due to specific physical properties of the seismic signals associated with: (i) the energy content, (ii) the distribution of relative energy and peak of ground acceleration related to the ground motion components and (iii) the spectral amplitude distribution in the frequency domain; these properties allow the triggering earthquakes to be distinguished from the others. The observed effects are relevant when compared to the direction of the landslide movement and the dimensions of the involved rock mass volume. The landslide movement is less constrained in the direction parallel to the dip of the slope and the landslide dimensions are associated with characteristic periods that control the landslide deformational response in relation to the spectral content of the ground motion. The earthquake-induced displacements are significant because they have the same order of magnitude as the average annual cumulative displacement based on a decade of strain measurements within the slope

    Seismic monitoring system for landslide hazard assessment and risk management at the drainage plant of the Peschiera Springs (Central Italy)

    The assessment of landslide hazards and design of strategies for managing the related risk have been widely studied topics in the scientific community due to the settlements, infrastructures and tourist and cultural heritage sites that may be threatened by deformations involving unstable slopes. Engineering geological and geophysical techniques have been recently integrated in multidisciplinary approaches to study gravity-induced slope instabilities and monitor their evolution. The slope that hosts the Peschiera Springs drainage plant (Central Italy) is involved in a mass rock creep process associated with deep karst dissolution. Due to the importance of this infrastructure, which provides water to the Rome aqueduct, an accelerometric network was installed in 2008, and a nanoseismic array was added in 2014. In this paper, data recorded by the nanoseismic array were used to locate 397 microseismic events related to the slope instability process, distinguished into two types with different waveforms: 16 failures and 381 collapses. The failures were distributed throughout the slope, while the collapses exhibited two spatially separate clusters below the groundwater level, at a depth where karst processes produce cavities. The clusters were analysed as two distinct microseismic sources characterised by specific frequency-magnitude curves of events that describe their attitude to produce events of different magnitudes. Regarding the accelerometric network, an automated procedure was developed for quickly analysing the seismic records, which include signals from teleseisms and near- to far-field earthquakes that can induce deformation in the landslide-involved slope. The results obtained by the two seismic monitoring systems were integrated with the aim of implementing a landslide hazard matrix based on the statistical frequency of the occurrence of such events and their probability of exceedance during a reference period, providing a useful tool for managing the related landslide risk

    Kantor Pertanahan Kota Semarang in charge of the land with an area of 373.70 km2 coverage, every day crowded with visitors who want to take care of the land petition. However, the high number of applicants who must be served not proportional to the number of care facilities available to the applicant should enter the waiting list queue or experiencing situation. This situation occurs in almost all counters, namely Counter 1 Land Information, Counter 2 Registration, Counter 3 Payment, and Counter 4 Product Delivery. Therefore, the required analysis is based on the model line system in accordance with the conditions of service which can then be used to address the issue queue. Based on the analysis, the model system is the best line in counter 1 land information (M/M/1): (GD/∞/∞). Counter 2 registration which is divided into 7 sub-counters have a model (M/M/2): (GD/∞/∞) to sub counters 2A, 2B, 2C, 2E/F, 2G, 2H, and the model (M/M/4): (GD/∞/∞) to sub counter 2D.     Does the Presence of an Iliac Aneurysm Affect Outcome of Endoluminal AAA Repair? An Analysis of 336 Cases

    AbstractObjective: to determine whether the presence of an iliac aneurysm compromises outcome of endovascular exclusion of AAA and to ascertain the fate of the iliac aneurysmal sac.Patients and methods: between April 1997 and March 2001, data on 336 consecutive patients undergoing endovascular repair for AAA were entered in a prospective database. Suitability for endovascular repair was assessed by preoperative contrast-enhanced computed tomography. A maximum common iliac artery (CIA) diameter ≥20mm was defined as iliac aneurysm. Patients with and without iliac aneurysms were compared to early (immediate conversion or perioperative death) and late failure (increase in aneurysm diameter or persisting graft-related endoleak, or late AAA rupture or conversion).Results: fifty-nine patients (18%) had iliac aneurysms, 19 were bilateral, for a total of 78 aneurysmal iliac arteries (median diameter 23mm; range 20–50mm). A distal seal was achieved by landing in 33 external iliac arteries, in 20 ectatic CIAs, and in 25 normal CIAs. Operating time differed significantly between patients with and without CIA aneurysms (153±71 vs 123±55min,p =0.0001), whereas no statistically significant differences were found with respect to early and late failure (2% vs 3%, p=0.5 and 14% vs 8%, p=0.11, respectively). There were no cases of buttock or colon necrosis. At a median follow-up of 14 months (range 0–46; i.q.r. 7–27 months) common iliac diameter decreased ≥2mm in 49 cases, remained stable in 25, and increased ≥2mm in 3.Conclusion: the presence of iliac aneurysm rendered endoluminal AAA repair more complex but did not affect feasibility and long-term outcome of the procedure. In our experience internal iliac exclusion was never associated with significant morbidity. These data may be useful when considering endovascular repair in high-risk patients with challenging anatomy

    The on-ground calibration of the flight model of the HPGSPC onboard the SAX satellite: Calibration set-up and preliminary results

    The High Pressure Gas Scintillation Proportional Counter (HPGSPC) is one of the Narrow Field Instruments of the Italian-Dutch X-ray astronomy satellite SAX. Sensitive in the hard X-ray band (4–120 keV), with a very good energy resolution, the HPGSPC is well suited for studying in detail the cyclotron features present in the hard X-ray spectrum of some celestial sources. The scientific calibration of the flight model of the HPGSPC took place at the LABEN premises(Vimodrone-Milano) during October and November 1994. In this paper we briefly describe the on-ground instrument calibration system and we report some preliminary results that show the performances of both single/double event and position reconstruction/energy correction onboard processing. Preliminary results concerning the energy resolution and energy linearity are reported too

    Signalogs: Orthology-Based Identification of Novel Signaling Pathway Components in Three Metazoans

    BACKGROUND: Uncovering novel components of signal transduction pathways and their interactions within species is a central task in current biological research. Orthology alignment and functional genomics approaches allow the effective identification of signaling proteins by cross-species data integration. Recently, functional annotation of orthologs was transferred across organisms to predict novel roles for proteins. Despite the wide use of these methods, annotation of complete signaling pathways has not yet been transferred systematically between species. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Here we introduce the concept of 'signalog' to describe potential novel signaling function of a protein on the basis of the known signaling role(s) of its ortholog(s). To identify signalogs on genomic scale, we systematically transferred signaling pathway annotations among three animal species, the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster, and humans. Using orthology data from InParanoid and signaling pathway information from the SignaLink database, we predict 88 worm, 92 fly, and 73 human novel signaling components. Furthermore, we developed an on-line tool and an interactive orthology network viewer to allow users to predict and visualize components of orthologous pathways. We verified the novelty of the predicted signalogs by literature search and comparison to known pathway annotations. In C. elegans, 6 out of the predicted novel Notch pathway members were validated experimentally. Our approach predicts signaling roles for 19 human orthodisease proteins and 5 known drug targets, and suggests 14 novel drug target candidates. CONCLUSIONS: Orthology-based pathway membership prediction between species enables the identification of novel signaling pathway components that we referred to as signalogs. Signalogs can be used to build a comprehensive signaling network in a given species. Such networks may increase the biomedical utilization of C. elegans and D. melanogaster. In humans, signalogs may identify novel drug targets and new signaling mechanisms for approved drugs

The system is based on commercial components and does not require any electrical connection to the wires or electric or magnetic field.     Cell Blood Count Alterations and Patterns of Anaemia in Autoimmune Atrophic Gastritis at Diagnosis: A Multicentre Study

    Background: Autoimmune atrophic gastritis (AAG) leads to iron and/or vitamin B12 malabsorption, with subsequent haematological alterations which could represent the sole clinical manifestation. We aimed to assess patterns of anaemia and micronutrient deficiencies in patients with AAG at the time of diagnosis. Methods: Observational, multicentre, cross-sectional study including consecutive adult patients diagnosed with AAG within the last ten years. Cell blood count, red cell distribution width, serum vitamin B12, and ferritin were collected. Multivariate analysis for predictive factors of anaemia was computed. Results: 654 AAG patients (mean age 59.2 ± 13.8 years, female (F): male (M) ratio = 2.3:1) were included. Anaemia was present in 316 patients (48.3%; mean age 60.1 ± 15.8 years, F:M ratio=2.3:1). Pernicious anaemia (132/316 cases, 41.7%) wasmore common inmales (27.1% versus 12.4%; p = 0.001) and in older patients (63.0 ± 14.6 versus 58.9 ± 14.9 years; p = 0.014), while iron deficiency anaemia (112/316 cases, 35.4%) was more common in females (16.9% versus 10.0%; p = 0.039) and in younger patients (56.8 ± 16.6 versus 60.2 ± 14.6 years; p = 0.043). The prevalence of iron deficiency was equally distributed between anaemic and non-anaemic patients (p = 0.9). Anisocytosis (odds ratio: 10.65, 95% confidence interval: 6.13–18.50, p < 0.0001) was independently associated with anaemia. Conclusions: Anaemia is a common manifestation in AAG patients, mostly due to micronutrient deficiencies. Scant haematologic alterations and micronutrient deficiencies may precede overt anaemia
