An original version of this bulletin was first issued by the Alaska Experiment Station in 1917. Authored by C. C. Georgeson, it was revised many times to meet changing needs. A 1945 edition titled "Information for Prospective Settlers" by G. W. Gasser, Territorial commissioner of Agriculture, was revised in 1948. This was followed by Bulletin 15 of the Alaska Agricultural Experiment Station compiled by Hugh A. Johnson. The present information was gathered by many agencies It was put together and edited by Mrs. Lenora Hedla and published by the University of Alaska Agricultural Experiment Station and Extension Service, and the Alaska Department of Agriculture. Assisting in this publication were the U. S. Department of Land Management; the U. S. Forest Service, the Soil Conservation Service, the Farmers Home Administration, the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Committee, and the Alaska Rural Rehabilitation Corporation.Alaska's agriculture is a growing industry. Crop volume doubled between 1950 and 1955. While Alaskan agriculture has been rapidly expanding, growers have been also keeping abreast of Stateside grading and packaging practices. They now offer homegrown products of the highest quality. A few farms are as modern as any in the States. Get PDF
The Massachusetts Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (MAHPERD) is a non-profit organization for professionals and students dedicated to promoting healthy and active lifestyles. The organization was in existence in 1935 as Massachusetts Society of the American Physical Education Association, before changing to the Massachusetts Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation and finally adding “Dance” to its name in 1983. MAHPERD is a division of the Eastern District Association of SHAPE (Society of Health and Physical Educators) America, a national organization started in 1885 as American Alliance for Health, Physical Education and Recreation. AAHPERD became SHAPE America in 2013. A list of known presidents can be found at the end of this document, including those from Bridgewater State University. The collection consists of five series of documents focusing on sports, physical activity and physical education in Massachusetts and one series of photographs and multimedia. Contents in the collection include history of the organization, meeting minutes, board and member lists, legislative and financial reports, correspondence, periodicals, publications, promotional ads, convention photographs and other material from this group going back to 1935. It is an active organization and new records are added periodically

Bone turnover markers and prediction of bone loss in elderly women

Around 70,000 osteoporosis-related fractures occur in Sweden annually and approximately half of the women in western world will sustain a fragility fracture after the age of 50 years. Fracture preventive efforts require the identification of individuals who are at high risk. Biochemical markers of bone turnover (BTMs) have shown some degree of fracture predictability. There is also a correlation between rate of decrease of areal bone mineral density (aBMD) and incident fractures. In this study, the correlation between BTMs and rate of bone loss (change of aBMD and ultrasound variables) over 5 years was investigated in the Malmö OPRA cohort of 75-year old women (n = 506 to 601). In addition, correlation of BTMs and bone metabolism, as assessed by scintigraphy, was tested in postmenopausal women (n = 22). Finally, the effect of precision error on the longitudinal monitoring of change in aBMD was assessed in elderly women (n = 690) and in elderly men (n = 211). There was a strong correlation between all bone turnover markers and the results of scintigraphy (total skeletal uptake of 99mTc-labelled methylene diphosphonate), with no significant difference between bone formation markers and bone resorption markers. BTMs correlated to the 5-year rate of change of aBMD, especially in the legs and the total body, and 5-year change in speed of ultrasound. When serial measurements of BTMs were analysed, the mean value of measurements were correlated more strongly to aBMD change than single measurements, and women with constantly high levels of BTMs had higher rates of bone loss. Precision error of aBMD measurement by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry has an influence on the detection of individuals with aBMD change exceeding the least significant level. The calculated follow-up interval for detection of a change in aBMD beyond the least significant level in more than half of the elderly individuals ranged from 3–32 years, and was dependent on the equipment used and the skeletal site tested. The results of this study indicate that currently available BTMs are associated with future bone loss. However, these correlations may not be strong enough to be predictive of bone loss at the individual level. DXA also has some limitations when used in the longitudinal setting in elderly individuals. DXA is therefore of limited use in the longitudinal monitoring of bone loss. Further studies with novel bone turnover markers may improve the ability of BTMs to predict bone loss

The Impact Of The Initial Health History Interview On Patient Satisfaction And Dissatisfaction With Health Care

Patient satisfaction or dissatisfaction was significantly impacted and tracked at the initial meeting or visit of the patient with the health care provider. The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors in the initial health history interview that contributed to patient satisfaction or dissatisfaction. The Theory of Goal Attainment by Imogene King provided the framework for this study. The study sought to answer the research question: What are the factors in the initial health history interview that influence consumer satisfaction or dissatisfaction? A convenience sample of 81 health care consumers, ages 21 to 80 years, was obtained from those clients awaiting treatment in three clinics and one physician\u27s office. An open-ended questionnaire based on the Handelsman tool was used to obtain the data following a videotape presentation of two sample health history interview sessions. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Findings were that caring behaviors influenced satisfaction while factors of environment influenced dissatisfaction. Recommendations were for further research and application of satisfying factors into health history interviews by nurse practitioners and other health care providers

Student Affairs Professionals’ Experiences Supporting Students through a Grief Loss: A Qualitative Study

    Get PDF
This qualitative study examined the experiences of student affairs administration-prepared (SAAP) professionals’ application of knowledge and skills to interact with grieving students and the ways in which their respective SAAP programs prepared them for this work. This study examined (a) the experiences of SAAP professionals supporting a student navigating grief loss at one case study institution and (b) reflections on the application of skills and knowledge gained from their education preparation programs. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with three full-time SAAP professionals at a single institution, and a comparative analysis of their educational preparation curriculum was conducted. Participants were asked to reflect on their experiences supporting students navigating a grief loss. The data from this study provided two major themes as important factors in supporting students in a grief transition: helping skills applied in practice and curricular influences on preparation to assist grieving students. This study also investigated how participants’ SAAP education programs prepared them to support students transitioning through a loss. The results indicated that while there are various curricular foci available in SAAP education programs leading to a position as a student affairs professional, there are similarities in their experiences when supporting a student after a death loss. The qualitative research study’s findings provide recommendations for course curriculum and professional development opportunities at the case study institution

Associations Between the Chemical Constituents of Fine Particulate Matter and Human Health Outcomes: A Literature Review

    Get PDF
Exposure to fine particulate matter, PM2.5, a component of air pollution, has known systemic effects on the human body. Research on the specific chemical constituents of PM2.5 that impact human health is fairly new, however. This literature review aims to draw connections between the chemical constituents of PM2.5 and their implications on human health. We conducted an online search for scholarly articles using a number of key-terms, and created a system to filter the search results. We focused on 69 articles pertaining to PM2.5 and its effects on different health systems. We found positive associations of PM2.5 components with human health endpoints in 97% of the studies. While PM2.5 chemical constituent studies are less common than concentration based research, it is clear that conducting more research is necessary to better understand how PM2.5 impacts human health

“Breaking Bad” Contracts: Bargaining for Masculinity in Popular Culture

This Article examines the award-winning television show, Breaking Bad, to illustrate how the idea of a contract in popular culture can become inflected with a style of retrograde masculinity. Deals in Breaking Bad take place in the classic contract imaginary, which resembles the classic Western shootout: two antagonists face each other down in a duel. The show interrogates the frontier thesis, with its links to the American Dream and dangerous masculinities, through the ruthless contracts of Walter White
