Coinduction up to in a fibrational setting
Bisimulation up-to enhances the coinductive proof method for bisimilarity,
providing efficient proof techniques for checking properties of different kinds
of systems. We prove the soundness of such techniques in a fibrational setting,
building on the seminal work of Hermida and Jacobs. This allows us to
systematically obtain up-to techniques not only for bisimilarity but for a
large class of coinductive predicates modelled as coalgebras. By tuning the
parameters of our framework, we obtain novel techniques for unary predicates
and nominal automata, a variant of the GSOS rule format for similarity, and a
new categorical treatment of weak bisimilarity
The OLYMPUS Internal Hydrogen Target
An internal hydrogen target system was developed for the OLYMPUS experiment
at DESY, in Hamburg, Germany. The target consisted of a long, thin-walled,
tubular cell within an aluminum scattering chamber. Hydrogen entered at the
center of the cell and exited through the ends, where it was removed from the
beamline by a multistage pumping system. A cryogenic coldhead cooled the target
cell to counteract heating from the beam and increase the density of hydrogen
in the target. A fixed collimator protected the cell from synchrotron radiation
and the beam halo. A series of wakefield suppressors reduced heating from beam
wakefields. The target system was installed within the DORIS storage ring and
was successfully operated during the course of the OLYMPUS experiment in 2012.
Information on the design, fabrication, and performance of the target system is
reported.Comment: 9 pages, 13 figure
Stroboscopic Laser Diagnostics for Detection of Ordering in One-Dimensional Ion beam
A novel diagnostic method for detecting ordering in one-dimensional ion beams
is presented. The ions are excited by a pulsed laser at two different positions
along the beam and fluorescence is observed by a group of four
photomultipliers. Correlation in fluorescence signals is firm indication that
the ion beam has an ordered structure.Comment: 7 pages, REVTEX, fig3 uuencoded, figs 1-2 available upon request from

A Method to Polarize Stored Antiprotons to a High Degree
Polarized antiprotons can be produced in a storage ring by spin--dependent
interaction in a purely electron--polarized hydrogen gas target. The polarizing
process is based on spin transfer from the polarized electrons of the target
atoms to the orbiting antiprotons. After spin filtering for about two beam
lifetimes at energies MeV using a dedicated large acceptance
ring, the antiproton beam polarization would reach . Polarized
antiprotons would open new and unique research opportunities for spin--physics
experiments in interactions
Spin-dependent pbar-d cross sections at low and intermediate energies
Antiproton-deuteron () scattering is calculated at beam energies
below 300 MeV within the Glauber approach, utilizing the amplitudes of the
J\"ulich models. A good agreement is obtained with available
experimental data on upolarized differential and integrated cross
sections. Predictions for polarized total cross sections are
presented, obtained within the single scattering approximation including
Coulomb-nuclear interference effects. It is found that the total longitudinal
and transversal cross sections are comparable in absolute value to
those for scattering.
The kinetics of polarization buildup is considered.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, to appear in proceedings of the 19th

Checking NFA equivalence with bisimulations up to congruence
16pInternational audienceWe introduce bisimulation up to congruence as a technique for proving language equivalence of non-deterministic finite automata. Exploiting this technique, we devise an optimisation of the classical algorithm by Hopcroft and Karp. We compare our algorithm to the recently introduced antichain algorithms, by analysing and relating the two underlying coinductive proof methods. We give concrete examples where we exponentially improve over antichains; experimental results moreover show non negligible improvements on random automata
The MAGIC Experiment and Its First Results
With its diameter of 17m, the MAGIC telescope is the largest Cherenkov
detector for gamma ray astrophysics. It is sensitive to photons above an energy
of 30 GeV. MAGIC started operations in October 2003 and is currently taking
data. This report summarizes its main characteristics, its rst results and its
potential for physics.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, to be published in the Proceedings of the 6th

Measuring the Polarization of a Rapidly Precessing Deuteron Beam
This paper describes a time-marking system that enables a measurement of the
in-plane (horizontal) polarization of a 0.97-GeV/c deuteron beam circulating in
the Cooler Synchrotron (COSY) at the Forschungszentrum J\"ulich. The clock time
of each polarimeter event is used to unfold the 120-kHz spin precession and
assign events to bins according to the direction of the horizontal
polarization. After accumulation for one or more seconds, the down-up
scattering asymmetry can be calculated for each direction and matched to a
sinusoidal function whose magnitude is proportional to the horizontal
polarization. This requires prior knowledge of the spin tune or polarization
precession rate. An initial estimate is refined by re-sorting the events as the
spin tune is adjusted across a narrow range and searching for the maximum
polarization magnitude. The result is biased toward polarization values that
are too large, in part because of statistical fluctuations but also because
sinusoidal fits to even random data will produce sizeable magnitudes when the
phase is left free to vary. An analysis procedure is described that matches the
time dependence of the horizontal polarization to templates based on
emittance-driven polarization loss while correcting for the positive bias. This
information will be used to study ways to extend the horizontal polarization
lifetime by correcting spin tune spread using ring sextupole fields and thereby
to support the feasibility of searching for an intrinsic electric dipole moment
using polarized beams in a storage ring. This paper is a combined effort of the
Storage Ring EDM Collaboration and the JEDI Collaboration.Comment: 28 pages, 15 figures, prepared for Physical Review ST - Accelerators

Companions, codensity and causality
In the context of abstract coinduction in complete lattices, the notion of compatible function makes it possible to introduce enhancements of the coinduction proof principle. The largest compatible function, called the companion, subsumes most enhancements and has been proved to enjoy many good properties. Here we move to universal coalgebra, where the corresponding notion is that of a final distributive law. We show that when it exists the final distributive law is a monad, and that it coincides with the codensity monad of the final sequence of the given functor. On sets, we moreover characterise this codensity monad using a new abstract notion of causality. In particular, we recover the fact that on streams, the functions definable by a distributive law or GSOS specification are precisely the causal functions. Going back to enhancements of the coinductive proof principle, we finally obtain that any causal function gives rise to a valid up-to-context technique
