Tagged particle process in continuum with singular interactions
By using Dirichlet form techniques we construct the dynamics of a tagged
particle in an infinite particle environment of interacting particles for a
large class of interaction potentials. In particular, we can treat interaction
potentials having a singularity at the origin, non-trivial negative part and
infinite range, as e.g., the Lennard-Jones potential.Comment: 27 pages, proof for conservativity added, tightened presentatio
Increasing Spectrum for Broadband: What Are The Options?
The growth of wireless broadband is a bright spot in the U.S. economy, but a shortage of flexibly licensed spectrum rights could put a crimp on this expansion. Freeing up spectrum from other uses would allow greater expansion of wireless broadband and would bring substantial gains—likely in the hundreds of billions of dollars—for U.S. consumers, businesses, and the federal treasury. ... U.S. experience suggests that it takes at least six years, and possibly over a decade, to complete any large-scale reallocation of spectrum. Thus, for policymakers, the ?projected? need is actually here today. This paper makes three proposals to increase spectrum available for wireless broadband under a flexibly licensed, market-based regime.
Health and Aging: A Roadmap for Maine’s Older Adults and Their Families
The rapid aging of Maine’s population has created a range of challenges associated with maximizing the health and well-being of our older citizens. This issue brief considers a series of policy and programmatic approaches to promoting healthy aging lifestyles in the state while ensuring the continued involvement of relatives and other informal supports in all such efforts. Much of the current legislation that governs policy decisions regarding social service delivery and allocation of funds for Maine’s elders is funneled through the Older Americans Act, but this has not kept pace over the past 20 years. One key factor that is often overlooked is the promotion of a healthy and active lifestyle among aging individuals. By age 75, one in two women and one in three men get no daily physical activity. Physical activity can reduce the likelihood of falls, medicalization, and institutionalization. It is important to take initiatives so that older individuals can live independently for as long as possible. This can be accomplished through implementing best practices, supporting resource centers, and educating older adults about prevention programs
Crossover from one to three dimensions for a gas of hard-core bosons
We develop a variational theory of the crossover from the one-dimensional
(1D) regime to the 3D regime for ultra-cold Bose gases in thin waveguides.
Within the 1D regime we map out the parameter space for fermionization, which
may span the full 1D regime for suitable transverse confinement.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
The second law, Maxwell's daemon and work derivable from quantum heat engines
With a class of quantum heat engines which consists of two-energy-eigenstate
systems undergoing, respectively, quantum adiabatic processes and energy
exchanges with heat baths at different stages of a cycle, we are able to
clarify some important aspects of the second law of thermodynamics. The quantum
heat engines also offer a practical way, as an alternative to Szilard's engine,
to physically realise Maxwell's daemon. While respecting the second law on the
average, they are also capable of extracting more work from the heat baths than
is otherwise possible in thermal equilibrium
Finite one dimensional impenetrable Bose systems: Occupation numbers
Bosons in the form of ultra cold alkali atoms can be confined to a one
dimensional (1d) domain by the use of harmonic traps. This motivates the study
of the ground state occupations of effective single particle states
, in the theoretical 1d impenetrable Bose gas. Both the system on a
circle and the harmonically trapped system are considered. The and
are the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions respectively of the one body
density matrix. We present a detailed numerical and analytic study of this
problem. Our main results are the explicit scaled forms of the density
matrices, from which it is deduced that for fixed the occupations
are asymptotically proportional to in both the circular
and harmonically trapped cases.Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures (.eps), uses REVTeX
Universal correlations of trapped one-dimensional impenetrable bosons
We calculate the asymptotic behaviour of the one body density matrix of
one-dimensional impenetrable bosons in finite size geometries. Our approach is
based on a modification of the Replica Method from the theory of disordered
systems. We obtain explicit expressions for oscillating terms, similar to
fermionic Friedel oscillations. These terms are universal and originate from
the strong short-range correlations between bosons in one dimension.Comment: 18 pages, 3 figures. Published versio
Vlasov scaling for the Glauber dynamics in continuum
We consider Vlasov-type scaling for the Glauber dynamics in continuum with a
positive integrable potential, and construct rescaled and limiting evolutions
of correlation functions. Convergence to the limiting evolution for the
positive density system in infinite volume is shown. Chaos preservation
property of this evolution gives a possibility to derive a non-linear
Vlasov-type equation for the particle density of the limiting system.Comment: 32 page
The Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug Indomethacin Induces Heterogeneity in Lipid Membranes: Potential Implication for Its Diverse Biological Action
The nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), indomethacin (Indo), has a large number of divergent biological effects, the molecular mechanism(s) for which have yet to be fully elucidated. Interestingly, Indo is highly amphiphilic and associates strongly with lipid membranes, which influence localization, structure and function of membrane-associating proteins and actively regulate cell signaling events. Thus, it is possible that Indo regulates diverse cell functions by altering micro-environments within the membrane. Here we explored the effect of Indo on the nature of the segregated domains in a mixed model membrane composed of dipalmitoyl phosphatidyl-choline (di16:0 PC, or DPPC) and dioleoyl phosphatidyl-choline (di18:1 PC or DOPC) and cholesterol that mimics biomembranes.Using a series of fluorescent probes in a fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) study, we found that Indo induced separation between gel domains and fluid domains in the mixed model membrane, possibly by enhancing the formation of gel-phase domains. This effect originated from the ability of Indo to specifically target the ordered domains in the mixed membrane. These findings were further confirmed by measuring the ability of Indo to affect the fluidity-dependent fluorescence quenching and the level of detergent resistance of membranes.Because the tested lipids are the main lipid constituents in cell membranes, the observed formation of gel phase domains induced by Indo potentially occurs in biomembranes. This marked Indo-induced change in phase behavior potentially alters membrane protein functions, which contribute to the wide variety of biological activities of Indo and other NSAIDs
