Aspecten van filosofische verklaring

Opzet van dit artikel is een antwoord te geven op de vraag wat de minimale vereisten zijn waaraan een verklaring moet voldoen om een filosofische verklaring te zijn. Achtereenvolgens gaan wij na hoe de filosofische verklaring zich verhoudt tot de andere activiteiten in het domein van de filosofie, en hoe zij zich verhoudt tot de verklaring in het domein van de wetenschap. Om de eigenheid van de filosofische verklaring duidelijk in het licht te stellen, nemen wij de ‘klassieke’ analyse van wetenschappelijke verklaringen als referentiepunt. Uit die ‘vergelijking’ blijkt dat de filosofische verklaring zich van de wetenschappelijke verklaring onderscheidt, niet door het soort vragen dat zij behandelt, maar door haar zuiver theoretische aard en door haar logica. Waar de wetenschappelijke verklaring ‘wat verklaring verlangt’ afleidt uit de uitleg, brengt de filosofie haar uitleg binnen in ‘wat zij wil verklaren’. Volledigheidshalve behandelen wij ook nog de vraag naar criteria waarmee wij de kwaliteit van een filosofische verklaring kunnen toetsen, en sluiten deze uiteenzetting af met een korte reflectie over het nut van de filosofie in het algemeen en van filosofische verklaringen in het bijzonder

Elaboration de dépôts avec une torche à plasma d'arc pulsé, synchronisée avec une injection jet d'encre

Afin d’améliorer la reproductibilité et la maitrise des procédés SPS (Projection Plasma de Suspension ou Suspension Plasma Spraying) et SPPS (Projection Plasma de Précurseurs en Solution ou Solution Precursors Plasma Spraying), notre équipe travaille sur la compréhension des instabilités du plasma dues en partie au mouvement de l’arc électrique dans les torches à plasma. Des travaux précédents ont mis en évidence l'obtention d'un nouveau mode de résonance qui permet d'obtenir un plasma pulsé avec des oscillations auto-entretenues de la tension d'arc. Un système jet d'encre à la demande piézoélectrique synchronisé avec le plasma est utilisé. Ce dispositif permet à l’aide d’un actionneur piézoélectrique de délivrer une gouttelette à un instant voulu. Il permet d’introduire dans chaque bouffée de plasma une gouttelette déclenchée par les oscillations périodiques de la tension d’arc (~1400 Hz). Ce système permet un traitement en vol reproductible, dans le but d’un contrôle accru de la morphologie et de la composition chimique des dépôts. Des dépôts à partir d’une solution de sel de nitrate ont été réalisés afin de montrer l’intérêt de ce dispositif de synchronisation

Inkjet printing of ceramic colloidal suspensions: Filament growth and breakup

Filament growth and breakup are investigated in the context of ceramic inkjet printing. Several inks were formulated and ejected on a printer dedicated to ceramic materials. They consisted of six colloidal inks, four simple fluids and two graphic inks. For each, stroboscopic snapshots were acquired and the filament shape was extracted and analysed, for different nozzle actuation pulses. The filament length and the thread minimum radius were measured during the ejection process. A scaling of the breakup time with the Rayleigh number was obtained, as well as a general behaviour for the filament growth rate during the ejection process

Art from a philosophical point of view

This is review of the show 'Space Control' by undergraduate sculptors of 'Saint Lucas College of Art Gent' that took place in the Kuvataideakatemia in Helsinki from Februari 20th till March 3rd, 2006. It considers the question whether there is a difference between conceptual art and experimental art. The answer is that indeed there is. From a philosophical point of view conceptual art is theoretical, whereas experimental art is practical. While theoretical art, focussing on representation, tends to conceal the perceptible in favour of expressing meaning, truth, emotion, reality, etc., practical art is an exercise in mastering (controlling) of the phenomenal, the perceptible. The common denominator of the works participating in the exhibition 'Space Control' is 'practical art', because they consist in a sculptural exploration of perceptible space
