Observations of Extremely Cool Stars
As one part of a program of infrared astronomy carried on at the California Institute of Technology, a survey of the sky in two infrared spectral ranges, 0.68-0.92 μand 2.01-
2.41 μ, is being carried out. The motivation for such a survey is to obtain an unbiased census of objects that emit in the 2.0-2.5-μ atmospheric window; this will, of course, include many ordinary stars, but it might also reveal many potentially interesting objects that would not be included in an a priori selection of objects to be measured. In fact, a number of strikingly red stars have already been found. Since most of these "superred" stars occur in the Milky Way, interstellar reddening may be of some consequence; but in at least a few cases the stars seem to be intrinsically extremely red. These preliminary results seem of sufficient interest to merit brief description at this time
Subventricular zone stem cells are heterogeneous with respect to their embryonic origins and neurogenic fates in the adult olfactory bulb
Wedetermined the embryonic origins of adult forebrain subventricular zone (SVZ) stem cells by Cre-lox fate mapping in transgenic mice. We found that all parts of the telencephalic neuroepithelium, including the medial ganglionic eminence and lateral ganglionic eminence (LGE) and the cerebral cortex, contribute multipotent, self-renewing stem cells to the adult SVZ. Descendants of the embryonic LGE and cortex settle in ventral and dorsal aspects of the dorsolateral SVZ, respectively. Both populations contribute new (5-bromo-2(')-deoxyuridine- labeled) tyrosine hydroxylase- and calretinin-positive interneurons to the adult olfactory bulb. However, calbindin-positive interneurons in the olfactory glomeruli were generated exclusively by LGE- derived stem cells. Thus, different SVZ stem cells have different embryonic origins, colonize different parts of the SVZ, and generate different neuronal progeny, suggesting that some aspects of embryonic patterning are preserved in the adult SVZ. This could have important implications for the design of endogenous stem cell-based therapies in the future

Cloud Chamber Investigation of Anomalous θ^0 Particles
Eighteen anomalous θ^0, (θ^0_(anom)), decay events observed in the California Institute of Technology magnet cloud chambers have been analyzed. Many of these decays are dynamically inconsistent with the τ^0→π^++π^−+π^0 scheme, but most are consistent with the decay processes: θ^0_(anom)→π^++π^−+γ, π^±+μ^∓+ν, and π^±+e^∓+ν. However, at least one event is inconsistent with each decay scheme. From the locations of the decays in the cloud chamber, the lifetime is found to be significantly longer than that of the normal θ^0 particle, called here the θ^0_(π2) particle. Other differences in the behavior of the θ0anom and θ^0_(π2) particles were also observed in the (a) momentum distributions, (b) origin locations, (c) relative numbers of θ^0_(anom) and θ^0_(π2) particles traveling upward, and (d) the types of V particles produced in association with the θ^0_(anom) and θ^0_(π2). It is concluded that not all the θ^0_(anom) decays can result from alternate decay modes of the θ^0_(π2). Moreover, many decays can be neither τ^0 decays nor alternate decays of the θ^0_(π2).
The characteristics of the θ^0_2 particle proposed by Gell-Mann and Pais are consistent with those of the θ^0_(anom) particle, with the possible exception of the observed types of associations. An estimate was made of the relative number of θ^0_(anom) to θ^0_(π2) particles observed to decay in the cloud chamber. If all θ^0_(anom) decays are assumed to arise from decays of the θ^0_2 particle, then a lower limit for the θ^0_2 lifetime is found to be about 10^(−9) sec
Energy saving in fixed wireless broadband networks
International audienceIn this paper, we present a mathematical formulation for saving energy in fixed broadband wireless networks by selectively turning off idle communication devices in low-demand scenarios. This problem relies on a fixed-charge capacitated network design (FCCND), which is very hard to optimize. Euclidean Greedy Drawings of Trees
Greedy embedding (or drawing) is a simple and efficient strategy to route
messages in wireless sensor networks. For each source-destination pair of nodes
s, t in a greedy embedding there is always a neighbor u of s that is closer to
t according to some distance metric. The existence of greedy embeddings in the
Euclidean plane R^2 is known for certain graph classes such as 3-connected
planar graphs. We completely characterize the trees that admit a greedy
embedding in R^2. This answers a question by Angelini et al. (Graph Drawing
2009) and is a further step in characterizing the graphs that admit Euclidean

In the course of a cloud chamber study of penetrating showers, two events have been observed which probably represent the decay in flight of Ï„-mesons,(1) and one event which probably represents the decay in flight of a K-meson.(2
Gravitational Helioseismology?
The magnitudes of the external gravitational perturbations associated with
the normal modes of the Sun are evaluated to determine whether these solar
oscillations could be observed with the proposed Laser Interferometer Space
Antenna (LISA), a network of satellites designed to detect gravitational
radiation. The modes of relevance to LISA---the , low-order , and
-modes---have not been conclusively observed to date. We find that the
energy in these modes must be greater than about in order
to be observable above the LISA detector noise. These mode energies are larger
than generally expected, but are much smaller than the current observational
upper limits. LISA may be confusion-limited at the relevant frequencies due to
the galactic background from short-period white dwarf binaries. Present
estimates of the number of these binaries would require the solar modes to have

The Causal Structure of Emotions in Aristotle: Hylomorphism, Causal Interaction between Mind and Body, and Intentionality
Recently, a strong hylomorphic reading of Aristotelian emotions has been put forward, one that allegedly eliminates the problem of causal interaction between soul and body. Taking the presentation of emotions in de An. I 1 as a starting point and basic thread, but relying also on the discussion of Rh. II, I will argue that this reading only takes into account two of the four causes of emotions, and that, if all four of them
are included into the picture, then a causal interaction of mind and body remains within Aristotelian emotions, independent of how strongly their hylomorphism is understood. Beyond the discussion with this recent reading, the analysis proposed of the fourfold causal structure of emotions is also intended as a hermeneutical starting point for a comprehensive analysis of particular emotions in Aristotle. Through the different causes Aristotle seems to account for many aspects of the complex phenomenon of emotion, including its physiological causes, its mental causes, and its intentional object
