    The Stellar Populations of the Carina Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy: I. a New Color-Magnitude Diagram for the Giant and Horizontal Branches

    We report on the first in a series of studies of the Carina dwarf spheroidal galaxy, a nearby satellite of our Galaxy. Our two major results are: 1) precise BI photometry (\sigma_{B-I} \simlt 0.05 for V \simlt 22) for 11,489 stars in the Carina field, and 2) the detection of two, morphologically distinct, horizontal branches, which confirms that star formation in Carina occurred in two well-separated episodes. The old horizontal branch and RR Lyrae instability strip belong to a > 10 Gyr stellar population, while the populous red-clump horizontal branch belongs to an approximately 6 Gyr stellar population. We derive a distance modulus (mM)0=20.09±0.06(m-M)_0=20.09 \pm 0.06 for Carina from the apparent magnitudes of the old horizontal branch and the tip of the red giant branch, and discuss modifications to the previously estimated distance, total magnitude, and stellar ages.     Non-local on-shell field redefinition for the SME

    This work instigates a study of non-local field mappings within the Lorentz- and CPT-violating Standard-Model Extension (SME). An example of such a mapping is constructed explicitly, and the conditions for the existence of its inverse are investigated. It is demonstrated that the associated field redefinition can remove b-type Lorentz violation from free SME fermions in certain situations. These results are employed to obtain explicit expressions for the corresponding Lorentz-breaking momentum-space eigenspinors and their orthogonality relations.Comment: 12 pages, REVTeX

    NICMOS Imaging of the Host Galaxies of z ~ 2 - 3 Radio-Quiet Quasars

    We have made a deep NICMOS imaging study of a sample of 5 z ~ 2 - 3 radio-quiet quasars with low absolute nuclear luminosities, and we have detected apparent host galaxies in all of these. Most of the hosts have luminosities approximately equal to present-day L*, with a range from 0.2 L* to about 4 L*. These host galaxies have magnitudes and sizes consistent with those of the Lyman break galaxies at similar redshifts and at similar rest wavelengths, but are about two magnitudes fainter than high-z powerful radio galaxies. The hosts of our high-z sample are comparable to or less luminous than the hosts of the low-z RQQs with similar nuclear absolute magnitudes. However, the high z galaxies are more compact than the hosts of the low z quasars, and probably have only 10 - 20% of the stellar mass of their low-z counterparts. Application of the M(bulge)/M(BH) relation found for present-day spheroids to the stellar masses implied for the high z host galaxies would indicate that they contain black holes with masses around 10^8 Msolar. Comparison to their nuclear magnitudes implies accretion rates that are near or at the Eddington limit. Although these high z hosts already contain supermassive black holes, the galaxies will need to grow significantly to evolve into present-day L* galaxies. These results are basically consistent with theoretical predictions for the hierarchical buildup of the galaxy host and its relation to the central supermassive black hole.Comment: 25 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

    Observation of a Turbulence-Induced Large Scale Magnetic Field

    An axisymmetric magnetic field is applied to a spherical, turbulent flow of liquid sodium. An induced magnetic dipole moment is measured which cannot be generated by the interaction of the axisymmetric mean flow with the applied field, indicating the presence of a turbulent electromotive force. It is shown that the induced dipole moment should vanish for any axisymmetric laminar flow. Also observed is the production of toroidal magnetic field from applied poloidal magnetic field (the omega-effect).
